(Hank Phillippi Ryan, author of The Wrong Girl and an Agatha, Anthony, Macavity, and Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning author) "As chilling as its title, a small-town police story that grows and grows into the bigger themes of power, corruption, and coverup." (Andrew Gross, author of Everything to Lose )"Excellent debut . . . a strong, fast-paced narrative and an intriguing heroine propel the believable twists in a plot involving politics, a burgeoning meth industry, and biker gangs." (Publishers Weekly (starred review))"This promising debut delivers a fast-paced, engaging rural thriller." (Booklist)xa0"June Lyons has just enough grit and verve to roughen her vulnerable edges, keep her fellow cops on their toes, and please fans of suspense with strong, perceptive female leads." (Library Journal) M.P. Cooley's debut crime novel ICE SHEAR (William Morrow) is one of O, The Oprah Magazine's Best Books of Summer 2014 and was called "an excellent debut" by Publishers Weekly in their starred review. A native of upstate New York, she currently lives in Campbell, California. xa0This is her first novel. From the Inside Flap AS a cop on the night shift in Hopewell Falls, New York, June Lyons drives drunks home and picks up the doughnuts. A former FBI agent, she left the Bureau when her husband died, and now she and her young daughter are back in upstate New York, living with her father, the town's retired chief of police. When June discovers a young woman's body impaled on an ice shear in the frozen Mohawk River, news of the murder spreads fast; the dead girl was the daughter of a powerful local congresswoman, and her troubled youth kept the gossips busy. Though June was born and raised in Hopewell Falls, the local police see her as an interloper--resentment that explodes in anger when the FBI arrive and deputize her to work on the murder investigation. But June may not find allies among the feds. The agent heading the case is someone from her past--someone she isn't sure she can trust. As June digs deeper, her already tumultuous murder case turns red-hot when it leads to a notorious biker gang and a meth lab hidden in plain sight--and an unmistakable sign that the river murder won't be the last. --Andrew Gross, author of Everything to Lose --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. From Booklist June Lyons thought high-profile cases were behind her when she left the FBI and returned to Hopewell Falls, New York. June’s father looks after her daughter while June, a widowed, single mother, works on the police force her father led for years. Then, responding to a call, she finds the body of a local congresswoman’s recently married daughter. June runs interference between the bigwigs at the FBI and the locals, wondering if the real reason the feds are involved isn’t the congresswoman’s clout but her son-in-law’s membership in a meth-moving motorcycle gang. This promising debut delivers a fast-paced, engaging rural thriller. --Karen Keefe --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Wait for the price drop to $1.99 - this is a rookie book and not worth $12

I bought this startllngly-priced book based on balanced, generally positive reviews, which I now assume were paid for. The fact that it had a hardback release suggested that the publishers thought they had something good and I was willing to go with it. Wrong.

I could drive a truck through factual holes in every page, and we're talking about a kindle page.

Just a few examples: a car that has sat out overnight in a blizzard will not gush warm air from its vents just after being started - it may not start. Squirrels do not frolic in the snow in the deep winter; they also don't eat ham sandwiches. And NO ONE who has lived in California refers to it as "Cali." After a blizzard plus freezing rain, it's not too likely that anyone is sitting out on their front steps reading a paper even on a so-called warm day. And a snow ball fight in a skirt and pearls? Not to mention off-stage action that would require a couple of hours somehow taking place in about 15 minutes?

As far as procedure goes, the "let's all be professional" characters are startlingly unprofessional. People physically interact in ways that would never occur in reality (including a possible bad guy putting his hand on the protagonist's shoulder in some soothing or bonding fashion??). And the author should do a little research to find out just how long it takes to ID fingerprints off an ax handle when working in a thrown-together tent in the backyard in a freezing snow at night.

The book is about 100 pages too long. The characters are stock (plucky, abused female copy; eventual fellow cop love interest; love disruptive FBI agent with protagonist back story). The plot is dazed and confused with obvious clues littered everywhere. So many, in fact, that I couldn't figure out whodunnit because pretty much anyone coulda done it.

Really the best character was the forensic tech Annie. Her persona was not defined by her job.

All the above being said, I can see some potential for this author. The book reads like she just decided to sit down a write a mystery book as a fling. She knows nothing about research, proper timelines, or actual police procedure. As other reviewers have noted, if a firm and experienced mystery editor took her in hand she could go somewhere.

a pretty good job overall

For a fist time author, a pretty good job overall.
The characters could have been expanded a little but that is a common complaint of mine.
This could easily turn into a series.
The story itself was nicely developed and carried my attention throughout.

A great new character to follow.

A really liked this book and a new detective to follow. The story line was excellent and the characters well developed. Easy to get involved in the plot line since the writing was well edited. Not a lot of extra words that don't add anything to the story.
Excellent read.

Loved it

I really enjoyed this book, finding it very hard to put down. Some of the pleasure for me involved the setting. I live in the Capital District, so all of the locations were familiar to me. The characters were totally believable and likeable and I look forward to the next book by this author. I was kept guessing until the end, even though I can usually figure things out before that. I highly recommend this book.

Ice Shear Review

Very draggy in the beginning of the book. Typical police crime novel. The ending was typical, but exciting. Nothing outstanding about this book.

Nice first book

I enjoyed this book a lot. A little uneven in the character development, it had a tight plot with a bit of a surprise ending.
I would recommend the book as an easy read for a summer weekend.

If you like a great mystery, this is the book for you!

Great read from beginning to end. This was a thriller that I did not figure out until the author let it unfold near the end. The characters were well described and kept the book fast paced and interesting.
