Features & Highlights

  • Anthony Hetheridge, ninth Baron of Wellegrave, Chief Superintendent for New Scotland Yard, never married, no children, no pets, no hobbies, and not even an interesting vice, will turn sixty in three weeks. With the exception of his chosen career, too sordid for his blue-blooded family to condone, his life has been safe and predictable. But then he meets Detective Sergeant Kate Wakefield – beautiful, willful, and nearly half his age. When Hetheridge saves the outspoken, impetuous young detective from getting the sack, siding with her against Scotland Yard’s powerful male hierarchy, his cold, elegantly balanced world spins out of control. Summoned to London’s fashionable Belgravia to investigate the brutal murder of a financier, Hetheridge must catch the killer while coping with his growing attraction to Kate, the reappearance of an old flame, and the secret that emerges from his own past.

Excellent Book

This is a very nice book. The characters are well developed and cone across as real. I think readers of British cop stories are in for a real treat and hope we see more and more of her books.

Likeable characters and I look forward to more in the series

I bought this as a recommendation from Kindle prior to hopping on a plane for a city break with friends. So engrossed was I that I sat up till 2am finishing it!

I like the developing relationship between the characters and very much enjoyed the style of writing. I felt that lovely warm feeling you get when you discover a new author and that lovely anticipation of the next chapter.

Looking forward to learning more about them all!

Fun read - held my attention

Found this book by accident, trolling for a new mystery. Liked the synopsis, so decided to try it. Enjoyable and entertaining read. Introducing the characters in a story can sometimes be tedious, as the author tries to give you enough information to make a judgement about their personalities, background, motivations, etc. while still advancing the story around them. This book gave you tantalizing hints about their pasts but left you guessing about many of the details in the main characters' lives. Since it is the first in a series, I assume that a great deal more will be learned about them in later books. I liked what I did learn, however, and wanted to know more, so I believe the author was successful in her presentation. As another reviewer stated, however, I did feel that the relationship between Kate and Tony was a bit too quickly developed; at least, in his feelings for her. Suddenly, he realizes within a few days of working with her that he must be in love with her, and that's that; no questions asked. He debates the appropriateness of being in love with her (age, position on the force, background) but not the fact that he loves her. Odd for a man who spent the previous 60 years avoiding emotional attachment. Kate's response to her feelings for him felt a bit more real. She felt attraction and questioned herself about it, rather than immediately determining she was in love with him. The circumstances surrounding the murder felt real, and the resolution was appropriately handled, but the case was developed rather quickly as well. It almost felt as if they solved it too easily. I enjoyed the book and would read another because I liked the characters and want to know more about them, but would hope that their relationship and their cases take time to evolve. I enjoy being teased along in a complex book.

Ice Blue

Love this book! Hope there will be many more. Great characters, dialog, and sub-plot, as well as mystery. Competes in quality with the great mystery writers of the golden age between the wars while being completely true to the present; forensics, Blackberry, and all.
