Description

Lisa Maggiore is the author of a children's picture book, Ava the Monster Slayer: A Warrior Who Wears Glasses and a fiction short story, Pinterest Saved My Marriage. Lisa writes in all genres and is currently working on other writing projects along with practicing her storytelling skills during Live Lit performances. Lisa resides in Chicago, where she grew up, with her husband and four children. For the past 20 years, she was a social worker, and won many awards including the Al Ward Spirit of Giving, and has been honored by numerous community agencies for her commitment to children and families. Lisa's social work career helped form many of the stories she writes about today and is the reason most of her endings are bittersweet.

Features & Highlights

  • It’s the fall of ’82, and Jessica Turner has finally been set free, entering a public high school after being homeschooled. But her mother wears a frown and her father wears his Colt .45s, with a warning: no dating allowed. Seeking warmth, Jessica finds herself in a secret relationship with bad boy Paul Peterson. When the relationship–and Jessica’s pregnancy–are discovered, Paul will be dead by nightfall.
  • Seventeen years later Jessica and her daughter live a quiet life with horse farmer, Matt Johnson. Marriage is on the table but Jessica’s remorseful heart will not comply. When an unexpected death brings Jessica back home, she uncovers her father’s secrets and discovers that her true path in life, and love, are just a choice away.

I loved this book

I loved this book. We chose this for our book club pick and I could not be happier with our choice. The cast of characters is so diverse; the main character, so sweet and typical of a new high schooler. The best friend, so supporitive and ready to jump in and let you borrow her clothes so you fit in! The boys- oh, Paul. And the dad- I really enjoyed his character. I didn't love his personality and the choices he made, but what an amazing character. I would like to see a story about him! How he got to be the way he was, how he found someone to fall in love with him and give him a family.

I had the amazing opportunity to meet and speak with Lisa Maggiore and she was very gracias in answering all of my questions about her creation!
Read it people! You will love it.

Great read with plot twists

I was immediately taken by this book because of the character development. Jessica was an only child whose father was beyond overprotective and overbearing. The mother reminded me of a 1950's housewife who existed only to please her husband and do everything he said. Jessica's aunt (father's sister) was a breath of fresh air. I could really put myself into the story. It honestly reminded me of some people I knew in high school. Without going into too much detail (I don't want to spoil anything, as I thought I had the book figured out, buy I was wrong) Jessica's father was not as bad as she thought. It's a very good read. I didn't find it slow going, in fact, I finished the book in two days. It's well written, with a lot of character development and plot twists. It really tugged at my heartstrings, made me laugh, and made me angry. I would highly recommend this book. I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did!!

Great read

A great read, and an interesting storyline with many twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. The characters were well-developed and you could easily identify with them. Loved that the story is set in Chicago and much of it in the 80s, which brought back memories, both good and bad! Would highly recommend it if you like romance, suspense and great writing!
