Features & Highlights

  • Malta 1941. To most people HMS Saracen is just an ugly, obsolete ship with an equally ugly recent history: her last commander is due for court-martial after shelling the troops he was sent to protect. But to Captain Richard Chesnaye she brings back memories―memories of the First World War when he and the old monitor went through the Gallipoli campaign together. It seems that captain and ship are both past their best. But as the war enters a new phase, Chesnaye senses the possibility of a fresh, significant role―for him and the Saracen.

Prepare to be pulled along in this fast paced storie. Douglas Reemans telling wastes no words, vivid descriptions, heart wrenching sorrow and the elation of survival. I can't praise this story enough.

The very best of Douglas Reeman

Douglas Reeman has written many novels about war at sea, and I have read most of them. HMS Saracen may be the very best of them all. Beautifully understated, carefully paced and plotted, it tells the intertwined stories of an unusual ship and a very special man who first serves aboard the monitor Saracen as a midshipman in WWI and then as her Captain in WWII. The characters are realistic and three-dimensional, and the descriptive passages are vivid and memorable. The action jumps off the page. I doubt you will ever read a better story of maritime combat. Six stars.

Another great Reeman Book

As is usual with Reeman written books, the story is excellent. The book was in good shape when it arrived. Reeman is easily one of the very best military sea story writers.
