Description

Hilda is now on Netflix! Season 2 coming soon! "Luke Pearson is one of the best cartoonists working today. Hilda is utterly brilliant!" —Raina Telgemeier, creator of Smile "Plain smart and moving. John Stanley's Little Lulu meets Miyazaki." —Guillermo Del Toro "Luke Pearson's Hilda stories are beloved in our house, and they will surely be enjoyed by audiences for many years to come." —Kazuxa0Kibuishi, creator of Amulet "In Hilda , Luke Pearson has created a truly odd and amazingly beautiful world—Stunningly personal and original. I am in awe of his imagination. He is a real inspiration." —Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy "Pearson’s utter lack of pretension keeps Hilda feeling fresh, while his reading of folktales and Tove Jansson’s Moomin series embeds Hilda in the long history of children’s stories. […] Hilda’s dilemmas, while fantastic, also feel real […] Pearson has found a lovely new way to dramatize childhood demons, while also making you long for your own cruise down the fjords." — The New Yorker "Hilda and the Troll tells the story of an artistic Scandinavian girl as she explores the unknown wilderness around her house, encountering a blue fox with antlers, the mysterious 'wood man,' and (you guessed it!) a troll. The art is as whimsical as the protagonist, and the bright colors enhance this comic book's magical-realistic effect." — The Horn Book Review "A master of mood-enhancing colors, Pearson nudges the story from vivid to haunting at a pen-stroke, ending with a book that is vibrant delight with just an edge of spine-tingling danger. A really great story for ages six-and-up, and anyone else who thinks comics are best read with flashlights under the covers." — Comics Alliance "Pearson is a rising star." —New Yorker Luke Pearson is the artist and writer of the Hilda series of graphic novels. He has fast become one of the leading talents of the United Kingdom and United States comics scene, garnering rave reviews from the New York Times and the School Library Journal. He was the winner of the Young People's Comic category at the British Comic Award in 2012, and he has been nominated for the Eisner Award's Best Publication for Kids and Best Writer/Artist in 2013. He has recently written and storyboarded multiple episodes of the cult classic show Adventure Time. He lives in Bristol, United Kingdom.

Great book but has Netflix ad on front

I was really happy to find this book at such a good price, but I was pretty disappointed when it arrived and had a big red "now on Netflix" circle on the front corner. I wish they had shown that in the picture. I would have gone with a different printing.

Hilda: Delightful, adventurous & deeply bound up in nature!

What a wonderful book that models many valuable traits for children, including:
- curiosity
- bravery
- kindness to animals
- creativity

As Hilda and other characters gather information from the radio, books, maps, and the world around them, they pursue adventures, make art, and connect with other characters. Additionally readers have their own map to look at and can use the pictures to decode parts of the story. Readers can also find hidden mythical woodland creatures. They might also discover tiny pixies wandering about.

My six year old is transfixed as we read this together. He loves the Moomin books and myths, so this book is right up his alley. It also has him excited to start recording his natural observations as drawings, which has me thrilled (fine motor and science magic!).

Highly recommended! One little thing to note: the book has a giant say, “Damn it.” Some families may have issues with that.

I recommend this to every parent I see

I recommend this to every parent I see. I consider Pearson a genius of our time, the world building is fantastic, the mother daughter relationship is rendered with such fidelity and empathy that it is hard to believe it isn't real, and Hilda is the best female kids character since Pipi Longstocking - actually better because it doesn't come with the racist baggage!

This deserves to be in every top 5 list of Children's literature. Read the whole series.

One of the characters says Damn It

This is for 8 year olds? My 1st grader checked it out from the school library and pointed to the big word bubble that said "Damn It" and read it out loud. She's heard worse but I really don't need her reading books with swears in them in first grade. What grade is appropriate for books to have cursing? I know the description says ages 8 (my daughter checked it out from the school library-yes, I'll let them know) but I wouldn't want an 8 year old reading books with swears (even light ones) in them either.

One of my new favorite graphic novels

Such a cute graphic novel. The art and colors are really beautiful and the quirky creatures make me laugh. I felt so cozy reading this book, it really just makes your day better by reading it. It can be read by adults and kids and both will love it just the same. I also enjoy the material of the paperback novel, it's different than what most graphic novels are printed on but I think it gives it a nice rustic feeling. Only thing I wish is that it was longer! I just wanted to keep reading it!

Buy the Hardcover!!!!!

We had bought the paperback edition, but I was very disappointed in the quality. It felt a tad nicer than a run-of-the-mill dollar store coloring book. Honestly probably one of the worst quality paperback books I’ve seen in awhile.

When the books came in the mail, my son immediately began paging through them. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous and the stories are fun little adventures. They’re great at holding kids attention and getting them excited to read.

I have a feeling we’re going to be reading and rereading these books A LOT. I definitely regret not buying the hardcover. The hardcover has a gorgeous spine/cover and much better quality for only a couple dollars more.

Absolutely beautiful world for young readers to fall into

Luke Pearson has an incredible vision which shines through in his beautiful artwork and world building in this series of graphic novels. This first one is the shortest and I recommend picking up the second and third along with it. You will not be disappointed.

Parents: There is one use of the word "damn" in this first issue which my wife and I censored for our 6 year old (yes I know, shame on us, but we don't need her running around repeating that, haha). But aside from that one very minor note, this series is amazing for a young reader with an active imagination. She absolutely adores the stories and characters! I love them too!

Great first comic for your kid(s)

I was looking for a comic book that my daughter and I could read together as her first comic. I read a ton of reviews and came across this book and I couldn't be happier with the purchase. I was shocked to see the Netflix sticker on the front and found out that they made a cartoon based on the book and we loved watching it after reading this. We read it all the time now.
If you are looking for your kids first comic, especially if it's a girl, then you have found the book.
Thanks

Contains a mild swear word. But good story.

Please be aware that this book contains the mild swear word, "Damn It". So think twice about giving this to a child who hasn't learned this word yet. Otherwise, this is a good book with an interesting story.

Great story. Fun for kids.

Pearson has an amazing style in Hilda. My kids love reading this book. There is one bad word (d**n) in the book though so be warned.
