Description

This is not a book about leadership theory. It's a handbook about how to connect with people. We know that leadership and influence aren't limited to corner offices and business dinners. Leaders are found everywhere, from the PTA committee meeting to the retail storage room. Maybe you've been prepared to be "the boss" since elementary school, or maybe your good idea has opened a door for more responsibilities within your organization. Regardless of how you came into the position or how much experience you have, the idea of leading people can be intimidating for all of us.· How do you know if you have what it takes to be a good leader?· How do you use your influence to bring out the best in others?· How do you create an environment where your team's shared vision can grow?In short, research-packed chapters, Chad Veach answers these questions with his trademark transparency and relatable storytelling. Help! I Work with People highlights the importance of self-awareness, people skills, and effective organization, encouraging you to lean in to your potential regardless of your level influence or experience. "As you lead yourself, you'll grow and evolve into an influential, effective leader. As you lead others, you'll bring out the best in them and invite them to join you in your mission. And as you lead teams, you'll motivate people to work together to accomplish common goals."Because the heart of leadership is winning people over and influencing them for good. Chad Veach is the founder and lead pastor of ZOE Church in Los Angeles, California, a dynamic church with multiple locations throughout the city. In addition to leading ZOE, he is an international speaker; the author of two books, Faith Forward Future and Unreasonable Hope ; and the host of Leadership Lean In --a popular podcast specializing in organizational health, creativity, and leadership development. Chad and his wife, Julia, reside in Los Angeles with their four children, Georgia, Winston, Maverick, and Clive. I expected more from someone I admire

Let me preface the review by stating that I really like Chad Veach. I think he is a talented communicator and can preach the socks off any of the young and hip Hillsong crowd today. I read all of his books and those of many of his peers. Veach's book, Unreasonable Hope, is the best written of any book by his peers. However, this book is a swing and a miss.

My issue with this book is how shallow it is on "leadership." I am not sure why in pop-Christianity today the hip pastor who is a friend of a few celebrities believes that they are positioned to be authorities on leadership, they're not. Experts in marketing, maybe. Experts in brand building, absolutely. The leadership books, vlogs, and podcasts by this group are nothing short of a simple regurgitation of what is by now common knowledge in business circles. Sure if you want to hear the buzzwords like, "lean in" and "authenticity" than this is your book. If you're looking for real case examples or practical guidance on topics such as authenticity than you're going to be disappointed. This book is the equivalent of a book report being turned in by an elementary school kid who didn't read the book and is taking the words of the book and placing them in a different order on the page. The concept of "leadership is influence," John Maxwell. The concept of "leading without a title," Mark Sanborn. The concept of "authenticity," Kevin Kruse.

The shallow examples and repetitive nature of this book are a waste of time and in the case of Chad, a waste of his talent. Write from your heart Chad. Don't try and impress the business world or the celebrity world. Do what you are best at and inspire hope in a world that can use more of it.

This is a MUST-READ for any leader/group/company who wants genuine & effective influence.

I love leadership books, and have read countless over my two decades as an executive leader of local, national and international organizations. I pre-ordered this book and read "Unreasonable Hope" in the waiting (also highly recommend). I love this book, and here's why.

- I can hear Pastor Chad's voice while reading this book. It's him talking to you as if you were having a conversation in his living room. He cuts to the chase, he doesn't cut corners and he doesn't waste your time. He tells you like it is, speaks his language (sports!), while exuding love, enthusiasm and encouragement. BOOM!
- This book is not a regurgitation of leadership quotes and stories you've heard before, this book is his own testament of what it takes to be a good leader - the good and the bad. He lives it. He's not telling you something he doesn't do or live out himself. It made the book that much more relevant, practical and real. THANK YOU!
- He didn't have a plan to write this book, another leader saw these strengths in Pastor Chad and encouraged him to write it for other leaders - WOW. And, Pastor Chad did it with depth, research, and fortitude. There is no skimping or simplicity to the lessons. It's well thought out, holistic, encompassing and incredibly inclusive of all aspects of leadership.
- He doesn't shy away from hard topics like ego, conflict or getting the right people in the right places and how to work through difficult situations. He addresses those topics boldly and effectively.
- Perfect balance of soft skills + hard skills to be a great leader. Although I think the diamonds in this book are the deep dives on the soft skills, particularly how to lead YOURSELF.
- I appreciated the section dedicated to manners. Enough said.

I really, really loved this book for so many reasons - right time, right place, right words. I wish it was in the hands of more mainstream companies + leaders and topping the charts on the NY Times Bestseller list. It deserves it and so does Pastor Chad.

- Joanna
