Welcoming to the curious

I’ve never followed Hawkman, but became a fan of Robert Venditti from his work on Hal Jordan & the GL Corps, and kept seeing good reviews of this run, so I gave it a shot. Again, I’m a novice to Hawkman, other then knowing he is reincarnated throughout history, has the Nth Metal and wings, but I enjoyed this first half-arc. If you have never been quite sure about giving Hawkman a try, but want to expand your DC palate, I think you’ll enjoy this streamlined, easy to follow tale!

Mediocre writing and fairly commonplace storyline

Given the accolades, my expectations may have been too high. I found this book to be more or less competent, but fundamentally unexciting. A series of vignettes as Hawkman attempts to "unearth his past" while repeating the same tropes about archaeology and discovery. I suppose the "travel through time and space to uncover a great mystery" trope will never get old, but it isn't particularly well done here. I found the dialogue woodenly written and the overarching storyline trite.

Perhaps if I was more schooled in Hawkman lore I would have enjoyed this book more; as it is I found it only mildly entertaining. I doubt I'll continue to volume two.

Bottom line: for fans of the character maybe. For everyone else, probably a pass.

This is what comics should be!

This was just an amazing experience to read. This is what comics should be, lots of fun, mystery and action. This is a easy jumping on point for old and new fans alike. Honoring the past and embracing new depths with a character I believe not alot of people appreciate. Art is consistant and enjoyable. Leaves you on a nice cliffhanger towards vol 2 which I will DEFINITELY be ordering. I strongly reccomend this to any DC fan. All you need to know is some knowledge about "DC: Metal" which even then they basically explain all you need to know. 10/10
