When he is not making books he makes films. He has co-directed several animated films including The Snail and the Whale, Zog, Room on the Broom, and The Gruffalo. Missed its potential

It was just meh. There was great potential for this to help teach children about how to handle their feelings and emotions, but I felt it failed to do that.

Buy this book

So I have 3 ASD kiddos (twins age 7 and a 15 year old) they all love this book. My oldest specifically always goes to grab this book something about this story resonates with her. I recommend this book, I love the message.

The delicate, entitled, confused, and forever unhappy monkey

Sounds like a fun book, right? Not really. The central message is “ i just want to be grumpy”. Not something the world needs, in my opinion. I am in the minority, I know, but I would rather teach my child to be strong and persevere. This book does the opposite.

My favorite book of my son's so far

I didn't know what to expect from this book but I loved it. Although I understand the critiques, I don't agree. A bunch of the animals around Jim Panzee are telling him he shouldn't feel how he feels because it's "a wonderful day". He tries to fake it but still doesn't feel good. He then lashes out (which yes, would have been nice if he apologized as well) and finally recognizes and accepts how he feels. I want to teach my son it's okay to not be in a good mood and it's actually not great when people give you unsolicited advice around it. (Cue current BetterHelp commercials lol.) I'll teach my son how to respond more appropriately but I'm glad it's an example of being okay not being okay.

SUPER CUTE MONKEY!!!

Don't be misled by this grumpy faced monkey on the cover. He is such a cute grumpy monkey. I loved the story of this book. The illustration is so beautiful and accurate too with all the expressions of all the animals especially Jim the grumpy monkey lol. I'm reading this to my 10 month old using very exaggerated expressions and voice for different animals. She seemed to find it funny that I can make those expressions and voices. It's a big boom and kinda long too. We don't normally get to the end as she will lose her patience but it is still a super good book! I was totally misled by the cover of this book as it doesn't look "attractively cute" like the other children's books. But I still got this book for her as there are so many good reviews and all my mom friends recommended. It's a must have in your children's library and I believe she would enjoy it for years to come.

Great book for grumpy toddlers and adults

I loved this book and so did my 27mo. It’s ok to be grumpy sometimes and to know it too shall pass.

Didn’t like the message

I’m not usually very picky about children’s stories, but I actually really didn’t like this one. First, there wasn’t any rhyming to make it flow and easy to read (like most children’s books) Second, I thought that it would have been a better message at the end about it being okay to be grumpy sometimes or how it can be hard to understand your emotions. It doesn’t even really address it, it just ends with “today is a good day to be grumpy”. I understand that I could have a conversation with my child about it after, but it would have been better if the book had integrated that in the writing. Instead, like other reviewers, the message seems weird.

Very sad read!

I have to say this book was a really sad read and I will not be adding it to our kids library. Usually with children’s books you walk away with a positive message. I wish the author would of ended this book on a positive note. The illustration was good and definitely age appropriate. But overall not a good book for kids.

Grumpy Mommy

The book arrived in great condition and is a very nice quality board book. My kids (15 months and almost 4 yrs) love this book. They really, really love it. They love it too much. I’m so sick of reading it over and over and over again. Ugh. I should take away a star …

Adorable Book, Great Seller!

My 3-year-old granddaughter loves this book (and I love the wonderful drawings!) The book seems to capture when someone is having "one of those days" better than almost any children's book I have seen. The expressions on Monkey's face, and his body language too, are priceless! I highly recommend it! The seller that I purchased it from sent it right away and it arrived before I expected.
