Description

Exactly What You Need To Know Grow beautiful Christmas trees sustainably on your small farm or in your backyard. As income supplement or outdoor hobby, the tradition of Christmas tree farming is both satisfying and practical and can make good use of fallow land. Grower Patrick White has built on and updated these techniques, pioneered by nurseryman and author Lewis Hill, to guide the modern grower every step of the way, from site selection to planting tips to sales strategies. Patrick White operates Meadow Ridge Tree Farm (www.meadowridgetree farm.com), a Christmas tree farm in Middlesex, Vermont, with about 8,000 trees in the ground. He is on the board of directors of the New Hampshire-Vermont Christmas Tree Association and editor of the group's newsletter. He also runs Meadow Ridge Media (www.meadowridgemedia.com), providing freelance writing and editing services to trade magazines in the agriculture, landscaping, and golf industries. The late Lewis Hill, a beloved and best-selling Storey author, grew more than 20,000 trees on his farm in Greensboro, Vermont. He was also a member of the National Christmas Tree Association and the New Hampshire-Vermont Christmas Tree Association.

Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
Genre: non fiction.
Though this book is aimed at US market, much of the information is still very useful for those of us living elsewhere. I’m in the UK,  I’ve a two acre garden and have in the last month just obtained a further two acres of woodland next to it, so was wondering if there was a way I could generate some income from it. This book was so timely I just had to read it.
Its very practical, from selecting types of trees, the advantages and disadvantages of each, to how and when to plant, and gives information so that I can work out when best times are for my part of the world. It doesn’t give specific months for planting, pruning etc but gives guides on best weather conditions and plant growth, and that's far better than some arbitrary date. The very first useful part I read right in the early part of the book was not to plant all the land at once, as then all the trees ready within a short time and would leave bare space, and of course no income for intervening years. Plus of course if there’s a glut in the year they are all ready then income would suffer adversely. Better to spread out the planting, making subsequent management and harvesting easier, and income more consistent. Its such simple advice, and yet I’d have gone for the plant all at once method....It’s packed with practical info like that, and I found it incredibly useful.
It even offers marketing advice, its not just growing trees in here, but what tools best to use in maintaining them, and then ways to maximise income and sell the crop once its ready.
Stars: Five. An excellent practical read no matter where you live.

Must read for new Christmas Tree Farmers

We learned so much! The format is easy to follow, and easily understood. A must buy if you are considering investing in a Christmas tree farm! It goes into such detail as the varying soil requirements of different tree species, desirability of reach species, how to make wreaths, a comparison of several farming methods, a breakdown of specialized equipment, and even a year round calendar or necessary annual tasks. I read it quickly, but I've kept it handy as a reference thereafter.

This is a small but helpful book. Based on the size and thickness of the book, I think it is a bit overpriced.

I mean. . . .

This book is. . . fine.
It is literally, a selection of paragraphs cut and pasted from Lewis Hill’s much more thorough (and more interesting) book - ‘Christmas Trees, Growing and Selling Trees, Wreaths, and Greens’.
Like I said, this ‘book’ is fine, but I’d call it merely a summary, or a book report even of Lewis Hill’s original. Looks like the publishing company was just hard pressed for material and tried to pass this off as ‘new’.
Ultimately, glad to have both on my shelf as books written on the topic are in short supply.
