Description

From Publishers Weekly Early in Daheim's sprightly 28th cozy featuring Seattle B and B innkeeper Judith McMonigle Flynn (after 2012's The Wurst Is Yet to Come), an old friend of Judith's, Ruby Tooms, arrives at Hillside Manor. Ruby wants Judith's husband, retired cop Joe Flynn, to help find the person who murdered her mother, Opal, years earlier, before DNA testing. Judith, whose admirers created a Web site celebrating her detective adventures, has vowed to stay away from criminal investigations in order to concentrate on her family and her business, but she soon becomes involved in the search for Opal's killer. As usual, Judith's best friend, Renie Jones, lends a hand. Series fans will relish the author's trademark humor (e.g., I hate it when people get mixed up and think the acronym for Female Amateur Sleuth Tracking Offenders isn't FASTO, but FATSO ). Agent: Maureen Moran, Maureen Moran Agency. (July) From USA Today bestselling authorMary Daheim comes her latestBed-and-Breakfast mystery featuringinnkeeper and reluctant sleuth Judith McMonigle Flynn, who is surprised when someone from her past comes knockingwith a case so cold it's practically frozen . . . Gone with the Win Flynn has vowed never ever to find a dead body again (at least not for a while). But despite warnings from Cousin Renie, she can't turn down a suspicious guest reservation from Mary Smith of New York City. There must be many real Mary Smiths, especially in a place as big as NYC. . . . Unfortunately, Judith already knows the woman who shows up at Hillside Manor. She's none other than Ruby Tooms, the world-weary barmaid the cousins met at Oktoberfest in Little Bavaria. Fearing that Judith wouldn't accept her reservation if she used her real name, Ruby arrives with some unexpected baggage—a cold case she dumps on Hillside Manor's Persian carpet. Ruby's mother was strangled after she divorced Jimmy Tooms, Ruby's father. Jimmy was in the clear, behind bars at the time for stealing Judith's wallet when Dan McMonigle's ill-fated Meat & Mingle Café went bust. Ruby wants to know if Judith can use her sleuthing skills to finger a murderer from fifteen years ago. Judith is about to say no when her husband, Joe Flynn, tells her that the homicide case was his former partner and old pal Woody Price's first murder investigation. Now the game is afoot, and for once Joe is more than willing to help his wife turn a cold case into a hot chase in pursuit of a long-ago killer. Mary Richardson Daheim is a Seattle native with a communications degree from the University of Washington. Realizing at an early age that getting published in books with real covers might elude her for years, she worked on daily newspapers and in public relations to help avoid her creditors. She lives in her hometown in a century-old house not unlike Hillside Manor, except for the body count. Daheim is also the author of the Alpine mystery series. Read more

GONE WITH THE WIN

Up to the present I have bought all of Daheim's Bed and Breakfast mysteries.
This is the last one I'll take time to read. The zaniness was amusing at first, but it's gotten to be boring, and the characters...mainly Gertrude and Renie...are just plain annoying. So far, I have most thoroughly enjoyed the Alpine series by Daheim, but the McMonigle-Flint series has pretty much run out of steam.

Glad I didn't pay for it

I borrowed this book from the public library and I am very glad I didn't pay money for it. This is my first (and last) time reading this author and I honestly don't get why she gets so many good reviews. She has to be one of the worst writers I have ever had the misfortune to read. The dialog is contrived and unrealistic; the constant descriptions of food planning and preparation are tiresome; there are way too many characters; and the author throws too many red herrings into the mystery and not enough actual clues. When the protagonist finally reveals the murderer, all I could do was scratch my head and think, "How the heck did she come up with that?" The plot was just muddy and rambling. I would be very surprised if this author uses an outline.

Disappointed

Have enjoyed the other Daheim books (both series) but this one was a disappointment. Renie and Gertrude are no longer funny, their conversations take away from the story and start to become annoying. I found the plot was all over the place and really little resolution with the main characters at the end. Sorry to see this series go this way. Was a series I always looked forward to.

A Fun, Engaging, Manic and Terrific Read!!

I was excited to learn of Mary Daheim's latest release,"Gone With the Win". Judith McMonigle Flynn, her cousin Renie and the rest of the witty cast of characters in the Bed and Breakfast Mysteries are back. Gertrude never misses a beat as we begin with her usual tirade to her son-in-law Joe or as she refers to him "Lunkhead". It is a hilarious ride as Judith takes on an old mystery from the past.

Read and discover along with Judith and her reluctant cousin as the try to solve a mystery case so cold it resides in the deep freeze until they uncover evidence that begins the thaw!

This is a charming story that will have you rooting for the answer and laughing every step of the way.

Don't miss this and all of the Bed and Breakfast Mysteries. Mary Daheim continues to score with this tale!

Loved it!

can't wait for the next one

I love this series. Can't wait for the next one. You feel apart of the family wanting to help solve the mystery.
Characters are detailed and grow in each book. Once you start reading, you don't want to put it down.

"Gone with the Win"

Still really like Mary Daheim, but a little garbled before the end. I didn't purchase the previous one , as the reviews were not favorable (it's the only one of the "Bed and Breakfast" I don't have). I wish she would go back to her earlier format, with a few less characters to try to remember and more interaction between the cousins without Renee being extremely obnoxious (some is very funny, too much is boring).
