Description

'A fond yet revealing portrait of a Brit-pop institution.' 'The most in-depth account of the Kinks - the story laid bare in God Save the Kinks is one of the greatest in British pop history.' **** ‘Neatly spun… Virtually every page unfolds a story of booze, bad luck or a punch-up … the drama grows madder as the years pass.’ 'The most in-depth account of the Kinks - the story laid bare in God Save the Kinks is one of the greatest in British pop history.'ÿ 'An excellent book on the band. It was amusing to see so many people spilling the beans after all this time.' 'A lively account of the Ray Davies-fronted group's life and times with a good eye for the many incidents of wilfulness and self-sabotage that stopped the band being quite as appreciated as they deserved.' 'A tragicomic epic of triumph and dysfunction, this is a highly readable account of a unique career. Although a self-confessed worshipper, Jovanovic never fawns over his subject, writing instead with a clear eye for detail and context ... it's a fine retelling of a very British legend.' 'A fond yet revealing portrait of a Brit-pop institution.' **** `Neatly spun. Virtually every page unfolds a story of booze, bad luck or a punch-up . the drama grows madder as the years pass.' ÿ Rob Jovanovic has written about music for over a decade, contributing to, among others: MOJO, Q, Level, Record Collector and Uncut magazines. His previous books have covered artists as diverse and unique as Kate Bush, Beck, R.E.M., Pavement, Nirvana, The Velvet Underground and Big Star.

Features & Highlights

  • In August 1964 The Kinks released their third single. After a little noticed debut and a follow-up that had failed to chart at all, Pye Records were threatening to annul the group’s contract. But with its unforgettable distorted guitar riff, 'You Really Got Me’ went on to reach No.1, entering the US Top Ten later the same year. Followed by a string of hits, it marked the breakthrough of one of Britain’s most innovative and influential bands, and a turning point in the fortunes of two brothers whose troubled story is as tumultuous and characterful as the music they produced: Ray and Dave Davies.

One For The Bookshelf

God Save The Kinks is a reasonably good biography with the author interviewing band members and those connected to the band and using various books and articles as source material. As one who is a great fan of the band and in particular Ray Davies I found this to be worth the read. Has black and white and colour photographs taking us up to 2012, a useful index and discography which has caused me to seek some discs I didnt' know existed. 330 pages not including the photographs. The image I had at the end was Ray Davies is typical of many creative people in that he can be difficult to live and work with but for all that he has produced great music and written some good books. Even as he approaches 70 he continues to put out some terrific solo albums that actually have something to say. Hopefully the rumour of another world tour with The Kinks will happen.

Rob Jovanovic does set the scene well by giving you the early days and influences, family and then trying to make it big and then making it big. The jealousies and in fighting and from time to time being unprofessional on stage. I enjoyed the book which is well written and a page turner but there was something missing. Not sure what but maybe it is not having been able to interview the main men in the band Ray and Dave Davies. We rely instead on various music mags and books for their interpretation of events. A bonus though is former band members and other musicians did give their time and input and it puts this type of bio above the pack. I came away knowing more about The Kinks and their music and the background to some of their albums and songs; their factions and fighting and just how under rated they have been. They are up their with The Beatles, Cat Stevens and the Rolling Stones.

(God Save The Kinks)

I love the Kinks and felt this book gave me a lot of information that has not been recycled from previous books. I am not going into a long review about it. But I think it is a great read and well worth the investment. I don't quit know what it is about the Kinks but they are a fascinating rock band. Just like the book says. (GOD SAVE THE KINKS).
