Introduction Gouache is a fantastic medium that has been under the radar for too long. What is it? How do you use it? How do you pronounce it?xa0 First, it’s pronounced either “gwash” or “goo-ash,” depending on whom you ask, and it is the love child of watercolor and acrylic paint. Gouache has the rewettable, water-soluble nature of water-colors, with the opaque layering capabilities of acrylic. However, unlike acrylic, gouache dries to a flat matte finish rather than a shiny, plasticlike one. There is something irresistible about the rich colors, velvety matte finish, and beautiful textures produced with gouache. It can be used to create paintings with fine, intricate details, as well as work with bolder, expressive brushstrokes. It also lends itself to a mixed-media approach because it combines well with colored pencils, watercolors, collage, and India ink. While painting with gouache might seem daunting at the beginning, there are actually many reasons why this is a great paint for amateurs and professionals alike. Gouache dries very quickly, which means you can complete a painting in one sitting, so you don’t have wet paintings sitting around drying. Its water-soluble nature makes it easy to clean and look after brushes and palettes. While the paints are opaque (meaning they are not transparent), they can be used like watercolors (which have more clarity) if sufficient water is added to them, making a great all-around paint. In this book we will uncover the many ways you can use gouache. It’s such a versatile paint, and it can be used to create everything from dry, rough texture to subtle and watery washes. By exploring how to use this paint with a variety of techniques, you will build up your skills and confidence. By the end of the book, you may have started to develop your own gouache painting style.I think the best way to learn is by doing, so with each project you complete you will be learning new skills. There is a mixture of beginner and intermediate projects, meaning this book is appropriate for total beginners, but there are still plenty of projects to engage more experienced artists and to keep you busy as your skills progress. The most important thing is to just have a go and not worry too much about the final result looking perfect. Every time you paint, you learn something, so enjoy the process and keep experimenting.

Hey, this is fun!

I am having a wonderful time going through all the exercises in this book! The instructions are nicely laid out step-by-step and are clear and easy to understand. The lessons span a range, so you will be busy, no matter what your favorite subject is. Or you can just jump around and try them all, as I am doing.

Note: I like to customize things, so my painting is slightly different from the cover illustration. The cover shows this particular lesson's painting in case you prefer to copy exactly.

GOUACHE -- WHAT IS THAT ANYWAY?

WELL, now I know. THIS is an absolute lovely book and the author takes you into the world of gouache with a very easy step-by-step approach. The book is just one of those kind that "invites you in" for a peek, and then snags you and gets you dragging out your supplies to play along from page to page. I LOVE THIS BOOK. I'll use it for a lot of inspiration and motivation as I navigate this new medium. It's just like she says: GOUACHE is an under-rated and under-estimated medium. I'm falling in love with it and like it better than acrylics now. SO much more versatile. WHO KNEW? Great book.

Easy to read, adorable and the art is so cute!!

What can I say!?!? This book is ANYTHING BUT BLAH! I am someone who has two left “hands” for painting but I wanted something creative that I can take with me on a long trip abroad. So curiously enough Amazon’s algorithm suggested this book 🤔… anyway I looked at it for maybe a month and then what the cost of the paints, brushes, etc. would be and decided to buy it and give it try. When I got the book I just fell in LOVE with it and started reading it and I really don’t enjoy reading. I’ve been following along and I plan to complete all the projects and then take everything with me on my trip since it’s not much and go through them again. I love how easy to read this book is and the cute quirky art it has. So far I’ve learned to use Guache and the use of primary colors to create other colors, which are still a bit of a challenge to me but all in all it’s a wonderful way to learn something new and fun. I even bought her other watercolor book and started painting some of those with Guache too. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is ready to learn something new. I also read somewhere that the artist who wrote the book, completed this book during a difficult phase in her life so it made me appreciate it even more.

A book you will love

This book is just wonderful. Whoever love’s Emma Block’s style will be immediately in love. The beautifully painted illustrations are well chosen for a beginner, but intermediate will also have a lot of fun! The paintings are a great size, the steps easy and clear. This book is very well laid out so you don’t have to keep skipping pages. Additionally you will love her little tips on the side. I can only recommend it.

LOVE LOVE - Awesome step by step instruction!

I love this book! It is like your own private mini-course. She takes you through simple to more complex gouache paintings. Even if you are not "attracted" to the subject she is painting it is soooo great to learn the skills that come with doing each project. I am almost done working my way through the book step by step. I am gaining in confidence and ability to handle gouache medium so this book was money well spent. I painted some with just using primaries and trying to mix my own colors...don't do that! too much work and takes the fun out of painting ( for a beginner) : just get the MIYA or HIMI Gouache Paint Set, the price is reasonable and it makes using this book fun. I enjoyed painting the two cute dogs the most. This would be a great gift for a crafty teen who likes to paint. Or an adult who wants to start painting. This allows the beginner to have more control over the paint than using watercolor and the cleanup is easy.

Inspiration Galore..

When you need a little inspiration, it’s so helpful to follow along with a favorite artist to experiment with color and paint stroke without having the pressure of what to paint. I’m using this book to fill up my sketchbook with each exercise and just paint. Highly recommend!!

Gouache ...a useful book, colorful, versatile, stoking creative process

Get Started With Gouache has a conversational tone about it that appeals to me. Emma Block begins with the basic supplies needed to get started. It's always interesting to know what an artist suggests and uses for their own work. Block puts tips, that she's found helpful, in little asides on the page. They are applicable in other media too. While there are many, many, books on painting with oils and acrylics, there are far fewer for this medium. "Get Started" is concise, with practice projects that will bear fruit right away. One feature of gouache is quick drying time. That has its' advantage for young students, who will see results right away. In addition, In times when ideas aren't flowing, the book can be valuable. You will not have to work through what subject to paint, what color palette to choose. Pick up the book and choose a chapter. It's already done for you. The act of painting, without such demands, will likely spur creativity to flow again.

Great for learning and reference

I'm trying to learn to paint and have watched several artists on video, but you can only pause and try to catch up so much. This book is awesome! Very step by step and just what I needed. It strongly follows her style, but will get you started in working with gouache and developing your own. Now I use it as a reference to mix the color I'm aiming for the first time instead of wasting paint with trial and error. Highly recommend.

Easy to Follow

This book showed up today and I couldn't wait to get started. I've been painting with watercolor since 2014, but gouache always seemed intimidating. This book breaks it down so well and the exercises are so cute!
