The BEST Beginner Book for Standard Notation

This book teaches standard notation in a very graduated, progressive method. Each page and each song builds upon the previous lesson, in a very organized manner.

Initial pages focus on single line melody on the top strings, one string at a time. Two note harmonies are introduced before full chords, which is the right way to learn.

The song selection is interesting, and most are familiar, public domain tunes. The songs include instructor chord designations, for accompaniment.

There is no TAB in this book! I have had some students who refuse to read standard notation, so I am looking for a book that can match this method with TAB, but I have not found one yet.

This book is an excellent introduction to standard notation on guitar. It provides the willing student with a genuine musical foundation, but is best used with private instruction that focuses on metronome use, and that can provide the student with additional insight. Dirk Johnson [...]
