Features & Highlights

  • Like many others on the autism spectrum, 20-something stand-up comic Michael McCreary has been told by more than a few well-meaning folks that he doesn’t “look” autistic. But, as he’s quick to point out in this memoir, autism “looks” different for just about everyone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
  • Diagnosed with ASD at age five, McCreary got hit with the performance bug not much later. During a difficult time in junior high, he started journaling, eventually turning his pain e into something empowering—and funny. He scored his first stand-up gig at age 14, and hasn't looked back.
  • This unique and hilarious #OwnVoices memoir breaks down what it’s like to live with autism for readers on and off the spectrum. Candid scenes from McCreary's life are broken up with funny visuals and factual asides.
  • Funny, You Don’t Look Autistic
  • is an invaluable and compelling read for young readers with ASD looking for voices to relate to, as well as for readers hoping to broaden their understanding of ASD.

Insightful and SO funny!

My youngest has autism (high functioning). He's super smart, but because he struggles with some things, he often says he's stupid and it's because of the autism. I have been spending a lot of time looking for examples of successful people with autism, so I can show him that even though he struggles, it doesn't mean he can't do great things, and that some of the most amazing people are on the spectrum. One of my sons great characteristics is his sense of humor. I can't remember when or where I first heard about Michael McCreary, but I remember watching a number of YouTube videos of him and just getting the biggest kick out of his personal story, and his comedy. Although it was highly entertaining, it was equally insightful into the mind of someone on the spectrum. Up until this point, Temple Grandin has been a big source for me about how someone with autism thinks. Michael does just as good a job, but comes at it from a comedic angle. I purchased his book for myself a short while back and read through the first half in one night. It's an easy read, and just so entertaining! I honestly can't wait to finish the book. I work at a middle/high school library, and definitely plan on purchasing the book for the school as well. 2 thumbs up! Highly recommended!

Good Book

Funny, You Don’t Look Autistic was written by Michael McCreary.
Summary: This book is about Michael. He is Canadian, a comedian, a brother, a playwright, a former improv student, and he is autistic. Throughout this book, Michael shares his story of growing up-and how things look from his side of the stage.
My Thoughts: I enjoyed this book. I found it funny, heartwarming, and at times a little heart-breaking. Overall, it was a great mix of learning about life from Michael’s perspective with bits of wisdom and humor thrown in for both neurotypical and autistic alike. I would recommend this book for anyone who has ASD, or anyone that would like to learn a little more about what it is like to have autism. Oh, and anyone who wouldn’t mind a good laugh now and then!
I would like to thank Annick Press Ltd. for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Recommonded reading for any human.

My nearly 3 year old grandson was recently diagnosed with autism. This all new to us so I have been reading nonstop trying to be better informed. I usually borrow the books from the library and then buy the ones I find the most helpful. After reading this I had to have it. It is funny and a little heart crushing. It is like having a conversation with the author. He sounds like a great kid and I am so glad he wrote this. I will be sharing this book with others.

Smile, laugh, and enjoy

A hilarious perspective about autism. Love his type of humor and that he included a few pictures. This is not an educational book but one that is meant to make you smile.

Accurate and funny

My 11 year old Aspie finally has a person he could relate to! The author is funny, engaging, and really painted an accurate picture of his autism experience. We’ve gifted many copies to local educators and his school library.
