Description

From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 1?Although the drama of metamorphosis has been documented with greater detail in other titles, this presentation stands out because of its classroom setting. The process is seen through the children's eyes as they experience the excitement of observing the wiggly caterpillar, watch it molt, change into a chrysalis, endure the endless waiting, and stare in wonder as a Painted Lady butterfly emerges and dries its wings. The closing pages show the class at the window watching the insect pause on a flower before flying away to begin the life cycle once again. Pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations create a cheerful setting similar in style to those found in Miriam Cohen's books about classroom events. Close-ups show the stages of transformation as captions wend along plant leaves and stems reminiscent of a caterpillar crawling. A small collection of butterflies commonly found in most parts of the U.S. and a list of addresses of butterfly centers are appended. An inviting book that young children can relate to and one that teachers will find valuable to support nature-study projects.?Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, Glen Rock, NJCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. A caterpillar comes to school in a jar. The class watches the caterpillar each day as it grows and changes. Soon, it disappears into a hard shell called a chrysalis. Then the chrysalis breaks, and a beautiful butterfly flies out of the jar! This is a perfect beginner's guide to the mystery of metamorphosis. THE Book to accompany Butterfly Houses, Pavillions

We got this book in addition to a home "Butterfly Pavillion" by InsectLore. It prepared my son and us for what to expect as the Painted Lady Butterflies were developing through each stage. So even during the lulls in the action, we could spark some anticipation. Which heightened the whole process for my 5 year old.
We also found out this book is used at his kindergarten for their butterfly learning.
This is the first Let's-Read-And-Find-Out book we've bought and were impressed enough to want to get the other books in the series.

I share it with all of my classes!

This book is perfect for 3rd grade and under. I normally use it as a read-aloud, although this would be just fine for them on their own. Great book!

Well...who knew...not me!

The little parsley caterpillar my three year old granddaughter found in the garden this summer was very special to her. She talked to him for the longest time. Then we brought him in on a rosemary branch and she checked him every morning. I knew next to nothing about this new border so, I needed more information to answer all her questions. We ordered "From Caterpillar to Butterfly". What great little book. Not only did we learn everything we needed to know we learned that come spring we can raise butterflies. Our chrysalis is now at the preschool with other chrysalises waiting for spring to morph to a swallow tailed butterfly. Great book for both of us. I would highly recommend this book.

Mom of two

Excellent book- my 3 & 5 yr. olds loved it, and it was easy enough for them to understand, yet descriptive enough that they were intrigued. We bought it in preparation for buying a butterfly habitat to watch the process ourselves. Great learning experience.

4-year-old loves this book

My daughter has been raising two monarch butterfly caterpillars, which are now in the chrysalis stage. We bought this book to help her to understand what is going on, and she not only enjoys the book but has also learned a great deal. The book is very much at her level, but contains quite a lot of information. The drawings are also very appealing. Based upon our experience of this book, I intend to purchase more titles from this series.

Best Ever Book on Metamorphasis

I retired from teaching at the primary level and wish I'd had this book years ago. It's just a perfect segue into the purchase of caterpillars and Butterfly habitat which I also ordered from Amazon.

The 2 little boys, ages 3 and 6 were very interested and love the "big words" which they learned quickly. Now that we are watching the book come to life, the whole family is having fun.

Good book for elementary age

I used this book in a kindergarten class when teaching the life cycle of a butterfly. The pictures are great and very clear. The wording however is a bit much for kindergarteners. I would suggest using the text for second grade and up. Overall, the concept was understood and the children enjoyed looking at the pictures during free time. I would suggest this book for any elementary school teacher.
