Description

George Mahood is an award-winning writer. Specifically, he was placed third in the Little Brington Village Fete's limerick competition (Under 11s category) in 1988. It was the same year that Mrs Marriott's legendary fruit loaf was beaten in the WI cake contest for the first time in six years. George studied Communication Studies and English Literature at Leeds University. After spending a year travelling in the USA (with clothes and money), he worked for several years in a variety of jobs including charity fund-raising and garlic bread making. He currently works as a photographer, specialising in weddings. George has been the lead singer and guitarist of a rubbish band and the chairman and midfielder of an awful Sunday-league football team. George has plenty more madcap ideas that will form the basis of future books. Follow him on Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch, see more photos, and to hear about future projects. http: //www.facebook.com/georgemahood http: //www.twitter.com/georgemahood

This clever, hysterical book has become a favorite!

Update 5/18/17: Our new book club in Silverton, Oregon chose Free Country for our first book of the month. Everyone gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up! We couldn't stop laughing sharing fun moments from the book! Thank you, George, and Ben, for entertaining us all month!

If you're looking for a fun, feel good, laugh out loud kind of read that takes you on an unimaginable adventure-look no further! George Mahood's Free Country is clever, well written, and hilarious with a fresh, fun storyline. This is my third reading and I've enjoyed it just as much each time, and shared it with friends who loved it too! Just the entertaining idea of two young guys starting a 1000 mile walk across Great Britain in their underwear-on a whim is a riot! It's clear early on they had no idea what they were getting themselves in for and that's when it gets fun!
Get this book on Kindle so you can start reading right away, get one in print to share, and get the audible version to put a smile in your commute and brighten your day!

Joyful, with laugh out loud moments

Free Country is a joyful book that chronicles the adventures of George and Ben as they cycle their way from end to end of Britain. In this era where selfishness seems to be the dominant trait of many people, it was refreshing to experience the opposite of selfishness in the willingness of the British people to support a couple of vagabonds mooching their way across the country. And for good measure the book has some truly “laugh out loud” moments. Thanks George for sharing your adventure with me and other readers!

Very funny book about the author and his friend starting a trip with no money or clothes. Just relying on the kindness of the people they met along the way as they walk from the bottom of England to the top of Scotland. They start out in only boxer shorts and soon hit up lost and found boxes wherever they can for clothing and shoes. I don't want to give too much away, but they want to cover 1000 miles in 3 weeks. A wonderful author. I enjoyed this book so much I bought all 5 of the books he has written. Lots of laughs!

Inspiring, funny and hard to put down.

Doing LEJOG May 2017 so bought this for inspiration. Wasn't expecting the 'can't put it down' experience from a cycling book, but it was exactly that. George writes with great humour and honesty. Both the book and the generosity of the British people are a real inspiration. Would highly recommend.

The Self-Corrections/ Elaborations Are Hilarious

Tremendously fun read. George's humor is laugh out loud funny (for the right comedic palette, which I happen to have...). Lightweight, engaging, and surprisingly up-lifting.

Immediately bought his next book!

I was recommended this book by an American friend. I found this a little odd, as this is a very British book, in its writing, its sense of humor and its cultural references. It must have crossed the Atlantic successfully though, as she loved it. It's not the sort of book I tend to read, preferring fiction, but I was immediately captivated by George's writing style and soon became engrossed in the story itself. It has a freshness and almost a naivety that I found totally engaging, to the extent that on finishing I immediately clicked the Kindle link to another of his books, Operation Ironman.
