Description

From Publishers Weekly Author of more than 20 novels of romance and suspense and three works of nonfiction, Hinze has written a masterful, complicated tale of suspense that gains momentum with each turn of a page. Her writing flows surely, moving from one character to the next, one setting to another, with readers keeping the swift pace. . Benjamin Brandt, owner of the Crossroads Crisis Center, hasn't set foot in the center since his wife and son were murdered a few years earlier. Then Susan comes to the center, beaten and battered, suffering a case of amnesia, and also bearing a close resemblance to Benjamin's deceased wife, also named Susan, and wearing the dead woman's cross necklace. The two clash at first, but even as murders occur around them, the tension between them relaxes. Still, there is a mystery to be solved involving Susan's identity and a past that must be reckoned with before either can move ahead. Hinze's plot may have readers puzzling over how this tangled tale will ever resolve itself, but that underestimates the author's talent for transforming the unlikely into something beautiful. (Mar.) It slid across the canvas, streaking the emerald gulf water with a bold, jagged slash of white.xa0“Gregory,” she said, her voice half croak, half whisper, her eyes seeing far beyond the easel and canvas in front of her.xa0She had made this confrontation inevitable, but she hoped to finish one last painting before—xa0“Well? Are you going to give it to me?”xa0Shaking, she turned. He stood closer than she expected, towering above her and blocking both studio doors. The one to the deck overlooking the gulf was closer, but with his stride and reach—she didn’t stand a chance. Inevitable. Putting down her palette, she squared her shoulders and stiffened, unable to see past the bloodlust in his eyes. Would her response push him over the edge?xa0Regardless, she had only one choice. Her mouth as dry as the sand between her and the surf, she hiked her chin and looked him right in the eye. “No.”xa0“Reconsider—and think carefully.” His hands curled into fists at his sides, his face darkened to red, and the blood vessels in his thick neck protruded. “Is that your final answer?”xa0How could anyone that angry sound that controlled? She darted her gaze from door to door, still seeking a way out. But there wasn’t one. No one would interrupt, would hear her scream. There would be no escape.xa0She glanced to a painting of a young girl hanging on the wall. What more could she have done? The man was rich, powerful, and more manipulative than anyone she’d ever known. She had gone all the way to the mayor looking for help. Well, to his wife, Darla, but even she had to admit how outrageous her claims had sounded. Gregory Chessman did seem incapable of anything that wasn’t wonderful.xa0Yet she knew better. She studied the painting, the innocence and promise in that beloved face. If he found her—and sooner or later, he would—then she, too, would die. That left but one option. One. And who knew if it would work?xa0“I know the truth about you.” She injected her tone with confidence and a warning of her own. “If anything happens to me, others will know it too.”xa0“You tried that and failed.” He grunted. “You’re a crazy woman. No one believes a crazy woman, not even an airhead.” He followed her gaze to the painting.xa0Something inside him snapped. His face contorted and he closed the gap between them in a flash, clamping his fingers around her throat. Fury pounded off him in waves, rivaling the six-foot surf. With a throaty growl, he jerked, lifting her off the ground.xa0She fought hard, kicking and swinging her frail arms, trying to break his hold, but she couldn’t make contact beyond his forearms. Her vision blurred, her starved lungs burned, craving air. Her limbs turned leaden. Then the brilliant light flooding the studio faded to black, and she knew no more.Gregory watched the life leave her eyes, taking pleasure in the fact that his would be the last face she would see. How dare she refuse him? Threaten him? The crazy fool. When the last spark of hope for revival passed and she hung limp and lifeless a foot off the floor, he dropped her.xa0Her body crumpled in a heap.xa0He didn’t look down, just walked over her, knocked the aged painting off the wall, and then crushed it with the heel of his shoe. Three years, and the subject in it still taunted him. Still made him vulnerable to Alik Demyan. Gregory shuddered.xa0Now she would suffer for both, for trespassing on his peace.xa0The portrait lay tattered and torn, its brittle frame cracked. He went at it again, and kept at it until the painting was utterly destroyed.xa0Though he despised dirtying his own hands, NINA would be pleased. No one had messed up this one… Read more

CHILLING TALE WITH NON-STOP TWISTS

A woman who can't remember who she is or what happened to her. A man who can't put his life back together after his wife and son are murdered. Yet, his wife's gold cross necklace connects them. This is the premise for the first of Vicki Hinze's Christian Fiction series set at the Crossroads Crisis Center.

At last Vicki has found her niche, a place where she can combine her passionate faith and pendant for romantic suspense. In FORGET ME NOT, her skill at creating a taut thriller that exposes a terrorist plot shines through in a "forget-me-not" read. When you start this story, make sure you are not going anywhere because once you begin, from the first page to the last, you will not be able to put the book down.

But more than the rollercoaster ride is the story's lasting message of faith, that no matter what abuse or sorrow or shattering experience you suffer, you can endure if you love and trust God. Vicki's Christian heroine whole heartedly relies on God, and that reliance is woven seamlessly into the character's dilemma and search for her identity, after countless attempts to kill her. Seeing the result of her faith wins over a man who has lost everything, including belief in himself. To the non-believer, this may seem impossible, but for those of faith, it is the reality that sustains us day by day.

Congratulations, Vicki. A five-star read.

Forget Me Not : A Novel

This book would be perfect for a teen or young adult because it shows a Christian's practical application of faith. Kelly is a young woman who wakes up with amnesia. She has a cross on her person & remembers that she is a woman of faith. She learns that her faith will carry her during a crisis & that God will not abandon her nor forget about her. She is a mighty prayer warrior who yields to the inner prompting of the Holy Spirit which not only keeps her alive, but causes her to offer kindness , patience, & empathy which turns away anger & leads to a special friendship which leads to love. Her faithfulness & right relationship with God leads to an attitude of gratitude. I liked the message better than the plot, but then again I do not like romances. My mother, who loves romances, enjoyed the book.

Good Suspense Story

The one thing I love about reviewing books is that it gives me an opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and read authors and genres that I normally wouldn't read. With "Forget Me Not", putting Christian fiction and adventure/suspense into one book would not have ever occured to me -- let alone to read something like this. But I'm glad I did!

All I can say is WOW! This was an excellent suspenseful page turner! It starts off with a bang and definitely keeps you guessing. There were some times, however, that the subplots and characters became confusing and hard to keep track of, but in the end, it all comes together.

I've never read anything by Vicki Hinze before, but I will definitely check out some of her other books now.

Mixed Feelings About This One

Forget Me Not, by Vicki Hinze, involves a woman abducted by criminals and then released near a crisis center in Florida. She can't remember who she is, but her faith in God makes her think she's there for a purpose. Since she looks just like the murdered wife of the crisis center founder, Benjamin Brandt, he becomes involved in helping her figure out her past.

The whole story takes place within a few days. In that time, Ben and the woman fall in love while hunting down her identity and encountering bad guys. There are several subplots and lots of characters to keep track of, so it isn't an easy story to follow.

There were two main things that kept me from enjoying this book:

First, the thugs who abducted her were portrayed as incompetent, low-level criminals but supposedly they knew the drug they used in the abduction, similar to ones used in surgeries, would cause her to forget who she was. They planted clues that would make her think she was Susan Brandt. I never figured out how they could know she'd forget her own name, or why they didn't just tell her the connection she had with the murdered woman.

Second, Brandt hadn't quit grieving for his murdered wife in 3 years, but in less than a week he was in love with a woman that looked just like her. To me, that's not realistic--or at least I hope it's not the way love works.

This is a book with faith as a central theme, and it is not at all subtle. At times it's quite preachy, and some readers may not enjoy that.

If you go into it knowing there are some inconsistencies in behavior and extreme coincidences, the book won't disappoint you as it's full of action and plot twists. It has some good points to offset the things I didn't like, such as a few memorable characters and a strong emphasis on faith, but I can't personally recommend this one.

Quick read

She woke up in a field, remembering nothing about who she was and where she had come from. When she walked into the Crossroads Crisis Center in desperate need of help she could hardly be turned away.

Except she looked so much like the wife of the center's owner,Ben, that it was odd. Especially since his wife had been murdered five years before.

Ben isn't sure how to handle having her at the center, especially when it is apparent that she is in continued danger. There is a connection between them somehow ~ but will they find it in time?

My Thoughts

Forget Me Not by Vicki Hinze is a fast-paced novel full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. While I enjoyed the book, it was almost too short for me. There was so much to sort through, many different angles that the story was approached from and in a way seemed `rushed' in some aspects. On the other hand, it made it a fast read that was full of suspense and action. :)

May Cause Sleep Loss

Forget Me Not is an intense, "ripped from the headlines" suspense story that grabs you from the beginning and offers a tense, nail biting, roller coaster ride. This book is chock full of real life situations - loss, grief, murder, terrorists, bombs, amnesia, car jacking........if it doesn't hold your interest, I suspect nothing will!

I think a warning should be issued with this book: May Cause Sleep Loss. This is one of those books you're likely to stay up very late just to finish it. In one interview, Hinze says of her book: "I wanted to write a faith-affirming romantic thriller because I love pushing the boundaries that expand the genre. I've always loved that, and I suspect I always will."

The story centers around Benjamin Brandt, the owner of Crossroads Crisis Center whose wife and son are murdered. This horrific loss causes Benjamin to not only question his faith and his commitment to the center, but also causes him to spend several years seeking to find the killer. Year after year of hunting for clues, Benjamin comes up with nothing. Since the murders, Ben has refused to step foot inside the center - until another crisis hits.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a woman with amnesia shows up at the center and has an uncanny resemblance to Benjamin's wife Susan. When Benjamin receives a phone call that a woman resembling his wife is at the center who thinks she could be Susan - he deals with more confusion. The woman shows up out of nowhere, with a business card from Crossroads in her pocket that says "Susan". Thinking that this could be another extortionist or nut case, Benjamin dismisses this as one more woman pulling a scam and after some money.

Upon meeting the mystery woman (whom they name "Karen"), Benjamin is rattled and angry. Seeing her dredges up more pain and guilt and he's still suspicious of her motives. When Ben discovers that Karen has an item of Susan's (a small gold cross with an inscription) the mystery deepens. With no memory, Karen/Susan has no idea how she got to the center or who she really is. As she and Benjamin begin working their way through the past - the plot thickens and finding the truth could prove to be deadly.

A reader's guide is included in the back of the book. Forget Me Not is Book One in the Crossroads Crisis Center series. If you enjoy this book, keep your eye out for Book Two, Deadly Ties.

Forget Me Not? I forgot several names!

Great beginning...too many bad guys to remember, and too many unnecessary details. Midway through, I sorta gave up and only gave it a cursory read. Wish the writer had adhered to the saying, “Less is more.”

Filled with Mystery and Suspense

A woman is found in the woods, badly beaten and with no memory of who she is or where she is from. With few clues as to her identity or what danger might be stalking her, she finds herself at the Crossroads Crisis Center. But not every face is a friendly one and our mystery woman has to decipher who is friend and who is foe.

The Crisis Center's owner Benjamin Brandt is suspicious of this woman who closely resembles his wife, who was murdered three years ago. Ben has made it his mission in life to track down his wife's killer and the mystery woman somehow seems to be his only link to the answers that he seeks.

From the very beginning "Forget me not" is filled with mystery and suspense and takes the reader on an adventure full of twists and turns. Author Vicki Hinze has crafted characters with depth and chemistry and anyone who enjoys romantic suspense will enjoy this first book in the "Crossroads' Crisis Center."

I liked the way the author showed that even when everything has been taken away from us...our past, present and/or future, God is still with us, guiding and directing our every footstep.

I received a copy of this book from bookfun.org in exchange for my honest opinion.

forget me not

Forget Me Not. Just the right title for this novel written by Vickie Hinze. Even not having had read any of this author's books, it still turns out to be such a great story. If you like suspenseful mysteries then this is totally the book for you. There is never a dull moment, that's for sure!
This amazing novel starts off with Benjamin Brandt who owns the Crossroads Crisis Center. He had God, his work, and his family. But in a moment all of that was taken away. While his center remained, his wife and his son are brutally murdered and his faith felt shattered to pieces in the aftermath. He just couldn't seem to get a grip on things. And no matter how hard he tried, there was nothing but dead ends in the search for their killer.
Years down the road, a mysterious woman appears at the center looking for help. But what torments and bewilders Ben's mind is how much she resembles his deceased wife Susan. She didn't know who she was, or how she got there. The strange thing was, she had Susan's necklace.
More and more seems to click and she has more in common with Susan than could ever seem possible. But who on earth was she? She was in trouble, whoever she was. Ben needs to learn how to have faith and they both need to work together to get through this strange, bewildering situation. But will that truly help? And what will they do to get out of danger?
This is a real thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat. You won't regret reading this one!
