"I've decided not to send you back to school, so you see, you really have no reason to get rid of me."xa0xa0 Justin grinned broadly as he watched her eyes widen with incredulous delight. "Oh, Justin!"xa0xa0she cried.xa0xa0Before Justin could ponder the wisdom of permitting this familiar form of address, she effectively distracted his attention by flinging herself at him in an excess of joy.xa0xa0Her skirts brushed the splinted leg, which was thrust out stiffly before him, and then her arms closed about his neck in an impassioned embrace. "Careful," he warned, still laughing as his hands came up to her waist.xa0xa0And the laughter died in his throat and he felt her soft lips brush his cheek.xa0xa0With a stunning rush of desire, he realized that he would only have to move his head a fraction to touch her lips with his. Justin's jaw felt bristly against her lips; although he had shaved that morning, his beard grew fast, and it was now late afternoon.xa0xa0Megan tasted the rough saltiness of his skin with lips that were slightly parted.xa0xa0The now familiar smell of him--a combination of good cigars, soap, and sweat--enveloped her as she kissed his cheek with impulsive fervor.xa0xa0Her arms were wrapped around the strong column of his throat, squeezing tightly in an effort to communicate her joy; her fingers touched the thick hair at the nape of his neck, vaguely registering the alien texture.xa0xa0Her kiss was as innocent as a young child's, and when her lips brushed his, she did not even consider drawing away. Megan felt his hands go hard on her waist, digging into her flesh with a force that should have hurt but didn't.xa0xa0Then he kissed her mouth, very gently; a soft, butterfly kiss.xa0xa0At first Megan was a little surprised at his action; she was not used to being touched, much less kissed, having never been around anyone who cared enough about her to physically demonstrate their affection.xa0xa0Her eyes opened instinctively, and she found him looking at her with a strange hot gleam in his golden eyes that she had never seen there before.xa0xa0Hesitantly, she smiled at him, deciding that she liked his kiss very much.xa0xa0The gleam intensified so that it seemed as if it would burn her, and he made a sound that was midway between a laugh and a groan.xa0xa0Then he was pulling her down so that she was sitting on his good leg, nestled against his shoulder; his arms slid all the way around her waist.xa0xa0Her head was tilted back across the hard muscles of his upper arm; against her ear she could hear the heavy thud of his heart.xa0xa0Her smile quivered and died as she stared up at him, mesmerized by that unreadable something in his dark face. "Am I frightening you?"xa0xa0he asked with a husky note in his voice that made it sound as if he was having trouble speaking at all.xa0xa0Megan's eyes widened as she looked at him, then she slowly shook her head.xa0xa0Whatever this feeling that he was arousing in her was, it certainly wasn't fear. "I won't hurt you," he promised as he bent over her.xa0xa0Megan believed him.xa0xa0Her fingers curled trustingly against the soft brocade covering his chest as he kissed her lightly.xa0xa0He dropped soft little kisses on her cheeks, temples, forehead, nose, and chin.xa0xa0She lay quietly in his arms, perfectly still except for her hands, which curled and uncurled against his chest, feeling a delicate warm glow start in the pit of her stomach and then pulse outward along her veins.xa0xa0His hands moved to stroke the loosened tendrils of her hair.xa0xa0She looked at him gravely, her eyes deep purple pools in the pale oval of her face.xa0xa0Justin smiled the ghost of a smile as he looked down at her; his golden eyes still held that hot, excited glow, but the curve of his long mouth was tender. "Close your eyes, darling," he instructed softly, touching her eyelids with a gentle forefinger.xa0xa0Megan obeyed without question, feeling a tremulous excitement begin to spiral inside her as he laid his mouth against hers again. His mouth was hard and warm as he brushed it back and forth across hers; he stroked her lips with his in a whisper-like caress, careful not to hurt or alarm her.xa0xa0When he felt her mouth quiver beneath his, he touched her lower lip with the tip of his tongue, tracing the outline of her lips before sliding between them to probe the smooth surface of her teeth.xa0xa0At the intimate touch, Megan felt an odd melting sensation. "Justin," she whispered shakily, her hands moving with blind sureness to clutch the back of his neck.xa0xa0As she murmured his name, Justin took advantage of her parted lips to slide his tongue between her teeth.xa0xa0The bold invasion made Megan gasp, and she stiffened instinctively as his tongue began to explore the hot, sweet recesses of her mouth.xa0xa0Justin felt her uncertainty and slowly withdrew his tongue.xa0xa0He kissed her lips again, briefly, gently.xa0xa0With a sense of wonderment, Megan felt the tremors that racked the long muscles of his arms as they enclosed her.xa0xa0His body heat seemed to be drugging her; she could feel it wrapping about her like a warm, protective cocoon. She was very conscious of the hardness of his chest against her breasts.xa0xa0Beneath her she could feel the steely muscles of his thigh as she half-lay across it. For the first time in her life, Megan was made intensely aware of the differences between a man and a woman.xa0xa0He was so hard, she so soft; he was strong, she was weak; he needed, and it was her lot to give. His kisses intoxicated her, enchanted her, made her quake with delight.xa0xa0From the answering shudders that rippled his arms as he held her, from the dark rush of blood to his high cheekbones, from the piercing heat of his eyes as they moved over her, she knew that he was as enthralled by the touch of her mouth as she was by his.xa0xa0All question of right and wrong fled from her consciousness as she looked dazedly into his lean, handsome face.xa0xa0Her body had come awake at last, and it yearned for him fiercely, with an instinctive knowledge that transcended the innocence of her mind.xa0xa0He was as entrapped by passion as she was herself, and yet she knew that she had only to utter the slightest sound of protest to secure her instant release.xa0xa0The knowledge only increased her longing to be sheltered in his arms forever. "Justin," she said.xa0xa0He gave a long, moaning sigh, and then his mouth was on hers, hot and shaking, kissing her with a hard passion that would have terrified her had anyone else been doing it; but from him, it excited her almost past bearing. sexy but scary

The relationship between Megan and Justin, the central characters in this book, reads like a scary, abusive relationship. First, the hero is more than twice the heroine's age. He is also her legal guardian, and hasn't bothered to give her any attention for the last 12 years. Nice.

He seduces her, and she doesn't find out he's married until his wife shows up. He treats her like a posession, and blames all his frustrations on her. He calls her names, abducts her, coerces her into sex, slaps her across the face and is just cruel and selfish in general. Yet she is still "drawn to him". (He needs her, poor guy!)

At times, he frightens her and makes her flesh crawl, but everything is fixed up at the end by his being really, really sorry. Please. This is just a sick relationship. Justin sounds more like a psychopath than an honorable guy who is helpless to resist the power of "love". There is nothing loving about him.

The only redeeming quality to the book is that is has the ring of truth, but that truth lies more in the fact that there actually are relationships like these than that such a relationship could turn out happily ever after.

Run, run as fast you can...from this shocking disgrace of a book!

OMG!!! Where do I start? I should start out by saying I REALLY, REALLY HATE this book. I've read a couple of this author's novels over the years, they were okay, but this one takes the cake for being a vile, piece of garbage that should've been sent to the reject pile. Written around 1980, I guess the bodice rippers were making their way out of the disco era where it was common for women to be marginalized, seen as sexual objects, and used and abused in every romance novel by Rosemary Rogers and the like. I have a feeling Ms. Robards was trying to emulate the former. Anyone remember Sweet Savage Love? If you haven't. Then good for you. I literally burned my copy years ago it was so awful. But I digress.

This clinker has a thirty-something man going through what I guess you could call a middle age crisis. Somewhere along the line, Justin's misspent youth was snatched from him when he took on the guardianship of a young girl, Megan when she was five. I suppose his later abuse of her is rooted in deep hostility. Or it could be because he's a sociopath who preys on seventeen year-old girls fresh out of boarding school. That's where dear little Megan has spent most of her life. They hardly know each other. He pays the bills, provides room and board, and doesn't have to deal with her at all until she comes home ready and ripe for the plucking. This entire story is horrifically disturbing. From Justin's indifference in the beginning, to the fatherly outrage, to the slow realization that he's physically attracted to her despite the fact that he's been a father figure to her for years, suddenly makes you realize you're reading a story about child abuse.

Because that's what Megan is, a seventeen year-old virgin with no inkling about the world or men. Suddenly she is infatuated with her protector. But Justin is far from that. From the moment he starts seeing her as a sexual object rather than an innocent child in need of his protection, the book goes downhill fast. Instead of trying to distance himself from her maybe by trying to find her a suitable young man to marry, Justin's lust clouds whatever judgment he had. Believe me, he hasn't much. He does everything he can to find ways to compromise her, to earn her trust, to tempt her into falling for his lies. He's basically a predator. And it's all an avalanche from there. Once he kisses her, that's it. In that day and age, she's done. So he takes it upon himself to finish the job. Of course poor Megan is often confused by her feelings for Justin. Poor thing hasn't the sense God gave a doorstop.

I think what made me the most angry was the scene the night after the deflowering. Megan is happy with herself and her newfound womanly knowledge. But of course she's wearing her white schoolgirl dress while basking in the glow of shame. Poor girl thinks Justin will marry her. No. He will not. He's already married! Gotcha! And our romantic pedophile is transformed into a raging, hormonal lunatic who is suddenly enraged with everything that Megan does or says. So what if he has a frigid wife? Megan should have known. So what if he gets her pregnant? Megan should have known. So what if he's an angry, unreasonable sack-of-you-know-what? Megan should have known better. And on and on. Everything that Justin does from here on out is all Megan's fault. He will justify every hateful word, every pinch, every bruise, and smack across the face as being necessary because she drove him to it. Sound familiar?

Well, by the time Megan decides Justin is a basket case and wants to provide for the child by finding a nice man to marry, Justin goes full retard and kidnaps her. Imprisons her. Marries her. And I'm getting tired. Yeah, he does a lot more. He also forces himself on her while denouncing her as a slut, whore, bitch, etc. He hits her so hard she trips, falls nearly over a cliff and loses the baby. It's all rather graphic. He's sooo sorry afterward. Yeah, we know. Justin is always sorry. Megan has no self-respect, will never find self-respect, and takes him back. He gets her pregnant again somehow, and they live happily ever after.

Ugh. There are better stories out there. Save yourself the mental anguish of reading this tripe. Excuse me while I bleach my eyes.

A Ward & Her Guardian

Without a doubt, Karen Robard's understanding of the human heart and its disquieted yearnings for taboo love make her characters disarmingly believable, sympathetic and appealing. However, what clearly distinguishes Ms. Robard's writing of erotic fantasy from those of other romance novelists is her ability to articulate honest naked expressions of passion and love without resorting to crude, prosaic hackneyed phrases which would otherwise trivialize the purity of the love between her protagonists. Ms. Robard possesses a unique ability to elevate sex beyond raw, desperate hunger into something beautiful, heavenly, almost sacred. Even the adulterous affair becomes forgivable, acceptable and desirable. Readers of "Forbidden Love" will come away longing to be a character - any character - in the novel if only to briefly witness the heart retching aches of the star-crossed lovers and secretly wish that their love does prevail.

Shudder...please save all women from men like Justin.

It's a good thing that I didn't read this book when it was first released (in the 80's) because I would have sworn off Ms. Robards forEVER! Actually I didn't start reading historical fiction (all right, ROMANCES) till the 21st century so I arrived late at the party. Even so, the predatory nature of Justin with little Megan just made my stomach turn. Then, to my chagrin, I couldn't stop reading it, waiting to see when Megan would grow a spine. When would she realize that even though she thinks she loves him, he was no good for her. I mean, even toward the end, he was taunting her with threats of "Wait until I get tired of you in my bed." Was he teasing her? WHO CARES?! Justin was relentlessly abusive and coersive. Megan was a woman of her time, I guess, that is to say, totally without any power legally, socially, or sexually. So as much as I disliked the characters as Ms. Robards wrote them, they must have been true to the time and place, so it must have been a good book. But I hated it.

Masterful Regency Era Bodice Ripper Kept me Reading Very Late Into the Night!

Karen Robards' historical romances always tell a great, lusty story. This one grabbed my attention and would not let me go. Though no date is given it seemed to be roughly set in the Regency era, and while there were some errors in forms of address and clothing color choices (a mauve "coming out" gown when it would have been white, and reference to a white wedding gown when it would have been a color), the story still gets full marks from me because these did not distract from what was a well-written, captivating story I could not put down.

Seduced by her guardian, Justin, Earl of Weston, when she was 17 while at his estate in Ireland, Megan Kindead is made to pay the price. And oh how she pays. Though Justin was very aware his behavior was despicable, he "couldn't help himself" and ruined her just the same. And, in return, the young innocent fell in love. Of course, he forgot to tell her one thing: he could not marry her as he was already married. Finding she is pregnant, Megan knows to give her child a name, she must wed and soon.

Megan is a high-spirited young woman with courage and convictions. I loved her. Justin was an otherwise honorable nobleman who was so obsessed with his ward. He would have her no matter the consequences, even making her his whore when he could not make her his wife.

It's a bodice ripper, oh yes, it is. And a very good one. Originally published in 1983 (the original cover which has so much more emotion), it is just as good today. The emotions are at times subtle, at times violent, but in all, believable; and the tension is non-stop. Robards is simply a master of this sort of romance and I count myself among her many fans.

Twisted love story...

Too many issues here. I was slightly uncomfortable with the storyline of "guardian and underage minor fall in love". It was one thing when he was fighting his attraction and succumbed to temptation...but, when he became controlling and abusive - I lost all interest in the book. When you no longer like the "hero", it's hard to like the book. I've enjoyed a lot of Robards' work, just not this one.

Not My Cup of Tea

I was disappointed. I can never get into a married-to-someone- else/cheating on a spouse main character--too many years of Catholic school or one too many times being hit on with the "my wife doesn't understand me" line. II know it is highly unlikely that any hetero male over the age of 30 would never have been married but, if I wasn't a sucker for the totally impractical love-will-overcome-everything storyline I would read something else.

I had to put it down

I honestly had to put the book down, it was making me sick. If written in present time the story line would be about a much older married man seducing his 17 year old niece (step-niece). Today we call this child abuse and rape and he would be arrested. I really can't believe I got it from my local library... and they'll know my thoughts on putting trash like this on their shelves.

FORBIDDEN LOVE

I agree with another reviewer this is a very scary and twisted relationship between Megan and Justin!! It almost seems like incest and phedophile. Even though she goes along with the whole thing. I only gave it one star because the plot could have potential, if she had changed some things...

Seriously imperfect hero

I read some of the other reviews describing the character of Justin, the Earl of Weston, and they are right. He is abusive, possessive, married, and lies to the heroine about that oh so very important fact. In fact he does not come across as a likable man until the end. He's 19 years older than Megan Kinkead, the heroine, but the age difference is believable as it was a relatively common practice to have a big age difference so that didn't bother me. What I liked about this book are the total imperfection of both the hero and heroine. There was a lot of yelling, screaming, fighting, clawing, and slapping - a lot of raw emotion and that really appealed to me. In most Regency romance novels, either or both the hero and heroine are too perfect, too noble, too suppressed, and too controlled. Robards throws that formula out the window and gives us two people who do show the dark side of love and passion. The side of us that throws all reason out of the window, the side of love that knows exactly how to push the other person's buttons, and all of the contradictory thoughts and feelings that love and desperate longing can generate. I enjoyed the book because of that and because it is well written, by someone who actually can write.
