Features & Highlights

  • The Ozark Mountains in Missouri and Arkansas have had a long history of foraging since indigenous tribes such as the Osage, Quapaw, and Kickapoo sporadically inhabited the area and utilized the rich natural resources. Settlers from the Appalachians came later and survived on what they could find, trap, and hunt. Foraging remains a major activity among the Ozarks’ outdoor community, supported in large part by established local restaurateurs and other buyers of wild herbs, berries, and nuts.Foraging the Ozarks, written by local wilderness expert Bo Brown, highlights about a hundred commonly found edibles in the Interior Highlands, from ubiquitous herbs to endemic species. With sidebars, recipes, helpful tips, and toxin warnings throughout, Foraging the Ozarks is the only guidebook the Ozark outdoor enthusiast will need to pick it, cook it, and eat it.

Buy It

I have been searching for a foraging book that’s specific to the Ozarks for awhile now, but no with much luck. I have been looking forward to receiving this book for months since I found it! Although I just received it, I can tell you it has some great quality photos and in-depth details about the plants. I’m already learning so much I didn’t know. Arguably the best foraging book specific to the Ozarks.

Highly recommend this book!

This is such a well thought out book! With color pictures, and great recipes I couldn’t ask for anything else. Love the fact that most of these items grow right in my backyard so I can easily familiarize myself with them! I recommend this book highly and believe no-one will be disappointed by this foraging guide!

This is the wild edibles guides you’ve been looking for.

This book is exactly what we’ve been needing specifically for the Ozarks region by a person who really knows his stuff! I love the recipes thrown in, the clarity, and great photos. It’s an easy guide to sit down with just to read, but also use as a reference when you’re out in the field finding things. I’m recommending it to anyone who likes - or is even just interested in - foraging and wild edibles. Fantastic!

Haven’t read it yet, But…

Should come in handy when my family and I are living in a lean-To shelter during the collapse of the United States.

Bigger pictures and more of each one

Enjoying the concise information. At least 2 or 3 pictures for each one and bigger for easier identification of plants. Love the book. Excited to go out and identify the local plants as i am new to the area.

Great book for Missouri edible plants

Wow! My old friend, Bo Brown, has written an excellent book on the subject of wild edible plants of Missouri. The photos are clear and well done and the text is very helpful. This is a must for anyone who loves our Missouri woods and foraging for the delicious wild edible plants to be found there. They're everywhere!

I've always wanted this.

Finding a book on edible plants of the Ozarks has always been hard. I always just got ones by state and went off that. But this is what I have always wanted. They pictures are super clear and make it nearly impossible to confuse them with anything else.

Good info, bad format

While I admittedly have not read the book entirely, from the entries I looked up, the author appears to really know his stuff. But I have a few caveats: first, the type is very small, 8-9 point. Second, he goes to great length to list everything by its Latin name and includes it's common name almost as an afterthought. This makes it difficult to locate any particular item by the table of contents and almost as difficult by the index. While I agree that the Latin names are important for sure identification, the reader should not have to work up a sweat to find a plant nor being along a microscope to read the text. Just as a sidenote, where was the quercus alba?
