Description

“Hannah's latest is a moving and realistic portrait of a complex and enduring friendship.” ― Booklist “Not since Iris Dart's Beaches , twenty years ago, has there been a story of friendship that endures everything, from girlhood dramas to bitter betrayal, to be the touchstone in two women's lives. In Firefly Lane , Kristin Hannah creates the most poignant of reunions and an unforgettable story of loyalty and love” ― Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean “A tearjerker that is sure to please the author's many fans.” ― Library Journal “With perfect pitch, Kristin Hannah describes the tumult and energy of the 70s and 80s, and on a deeper level takes readers into the heart of a friendship between two women. Firefly Lane is masterful at the grand sweep and the fine detail.” ―Elin Hilderbrand, author of Barefoot“This terrific buddy saga about two best girlfriends who survive all sorts of escapades and catastrophes will inevitably provoke comparisons with Iris Dart's 'Beaches,' but the story is all Hannah's own.” ― The Seattle Times “No one writes more insightfully about women's friendships with all of their messy wonder, humor, pain and complexity like Kristin Hannah. She's a marvel.” ― Susan Elizabeth Phillips, author of Natural Born Charmer KRISTIN HANNAH is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty novels, including The Nightingale, The Great Alone , and The Four Winds . A former lawyer turned writer, she lives with her husband in the Pacific Northwest.

Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. Too much hype - Not enough substance

I really didn’t like it. It was too much like a Hallmark movie to me and I don’t like those either. It’s the story of two girls growing up and old together, but the story line is a bit on the unbelievable side. Tully is the beautiful cool girl and Kate is the girl with plain looks and no friends. Spoiler Alert: Tully comes from a horrible background where her Mother abandons her and has to fight for any respect/understanding from the local people. Kate comes from a near perfect family but is shy and awkward. It’s a story of them learning to embrace their differences and learning how to help each other grow. Great concept, but it goes overboard in their young adult lives. Kate knew that the man she married was really in love with her best friend Tully, but seemed to accept that fact. She accepted it so much that she was complicit in letting them work closely together, encouraged them to spend work related alone time together even though there was some sexual history between the two. Meanwhile, Kate is being the dutiful wife and raising their children. This is where it gets too unbelievable for me. Time marches on and circumstances cause Kate & Tully to face some of their conflicts. This book has a typical “Hallmarkish” ending. I was really wanting to like it, but in trying to emphasize the two women’s differences, the Author made Kate into a unbelievable, weak character. I wish I had skipped this one.

Not the writing expected after reading The Nightengale...very disappointing.

Sheer trite drivel....don’t waste your time.... not even a good “Beach Book”

Firefly Lane

I purchased the book after binge-watching the first season of the series on Netflix and did not want to wait for season 2. The series did take some artistic license to make the story more relevant to current times and using flashbacks, which is fine. However, after finishing the book, I felt a bit let down. It was like a modern day version of the movie, Beaches. I had hoped for something a little different. Everything was fine up until the last 75 pages.

A waste of time.

I found this book to be an insulting string of trite references to the 70’s and the PNW. It was as if Hannah was just too tired to bother to actually provide any meaningful description or maybe she, too, was bored with the predictable story line. I think it might have been interesting for only a middle school girl. I found The Nightingale to be a compelling read, but l couldn’t motivate myself to finish this drivel. When l checked back with the acquaintance who recommended The Nightengale, she also didn’t finish it. I rarely quit a book, but this was a total waste of time and money.

Save yourself the read

After reading such rave reviews, I don’t get it. The friendship is toxic at best. Tully is a horrible person through and through. She’s selfish and never grows as a character. Kate outgrew her friendship about an hour after it started but is always silent. I started to resent her character for her suffer in silence bit. Johnny didn’t have any redeeming qualities to me either. His priorities were always off.

I hate love triangles. I happened to have read the second book first and enjoyed it more but still couldn’t stand Tully. She’s like athletes foot on the foot of humanity.
