Review “I devoured FINDING JAKE. The tension is almost unbearable in this thriller-cum-character study as layer after layer of a father’s soul are revealed as reflected in the character of his missing son. Utterly engrossing.” — Alice LaPlante, bestselling author of TURN OF MIND and CIRCLE OF WIVES on FINDING JAKE Finding Jake is truly compelling. I read it in one sitting, tearing through the pages right to the unexpected ending - which stayed with me for days. — Paula Daly, author of KEEP YOUR FRIENDS CLOSE on FINDING JAKE “A compelling read; disturbingly relevant in contemporary America. ” — Kirkus Reviews “Reardon deftly builds suspense by setting his dual story lines on a collision course toward a shattering-and surprising-conclusion.” — Publishers Weekly on FINDING JAKE “FINDING JAKE is compelling psychological suspense -- but also so much more. A journey into the depths of a parent’s worst nightmare, it is at turns heartbreaking, surprising, devastating, hopeful... I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time to come.” — Alison Gaylin, USA Today bestselling author of STAY WITH ME on FINDING JAKE “FINDING JAKE tells the harrowing tale of a deadly school shooting from a father’s perspective… The suspense is killing, but it’s nothing compared with this father’s anguish as he tries to find his son - the real boy, not the one he thought he knew.” — New York Times Book Review on FINDING JAKE From the Back Cover “I devoured Finding Jake . The tension is almost unbearable in this thriller-cum-character study as layer after layer of a father’s soul are revealed as reflected in the character of his missing son. Utterly engrossing.”—Alice LaPlante, New York Times bestselling author of Circle of Wives and Turn of Mind “Harrowing.” —New York Times Book Review Simon Connolly’s successful wife has gone to her law office each day, while he has stayed home to raise their children—Jake and Laney. He has tried to do the best for the kids. For sunny, outgoing Laney, it’s been easy. But Jake is different. He has always been on the quiet side, preferring the company of his small group of friends to popularity and organized sports. Now that his children are in high school, Simon should be able to relax, to worry less. He’s never given that chance. On a warm November day, he receives a text: There has been a shooting at the high school. Racing to the rendezvous point, Simon is forced to wait with scores of other anxious parents as one by one, they are reunited with their children. Their numbers dwindle, eventually leaving Simon alone. That is when he learns that Jake is the only child missing. As his worst nightmare unfolds, Simon’s thoughts race. Where is Jake? What happened in those final moments? Jake could not have done this—or could he? Did Simon miss the signs? As rumors begin to ricochet, amplified by an invasive media and the fear swallowing their community, Simon must find answers. But there is only one way to understand what has happened . . . he must find Jake. About the Author Bryan Reardon is a freelance writer specializing in medical communications. so simplistic. This had the makings of being a terrific book to give insights on being a stay at home dad, raising a son, and the thinking behind some of the mass shootings of our day. Had no depth on any of these subjects. After the first two chapters, you knew exactly what was going to happen. So predictable...

Bounces from dull to riveting and back again

This book bounces between the past and present with one being far more interesting to the reader than the other. A good chunk of the book takes place describing every stage and age of the son's childhood. I kept waiting for the point for these flashbacks to be revealed, but they kind of just plodded along. When the book focuses on the story in the present, it was intense, scary and sad. I wish the book spent more time in the present story than the past.

Last note, I found the main character (the father) to be grating. He was constantly complaining/whining about being a stay-at-home dad. I found this more than annoying. I couldn't get myself to care about him or Jake halfway throught the book, because the father was so obnoxiously whiny and insecure and I didn't really ever feel as if I got to know Jake due to the lack of depth given to his character.

A rare book that will scare you and move you at the same time.

A touching novel of a stay at home father's love for his son, painful at times. Bryan has a way with words, edge of the seat tension as you peruse the chapters, anticipating yet wondering what will come next.
His reasons for writing this book and the background are equally fascinating

A great read

What a moving, brilliant book

Be prepared to be utterly engrossed in the families story. Every emotion is put out on the table. It takes a lot to write a book like this and the author Bryan Reardon left it all out there. It is a book that will stay with me.

Strong story/Realistic characters

What a well written story. It begins with romance. The narrator, Jake's father falls in love, proposes on the beach. His wife is a well-paid, hard working attorney. So they decided that the father will stay home with the kids. Simon (the Dad) goes through all the normal angst of raising two kids, first Jake and then sister Laney. Should they go to play dates? Should they move from the city to the suburbs, near good schools, etc. Wife Rachel loves Simon & the kids but is extremely busy in her career.
The book opens with the panic of a school shooting. The chapters flip from that horrifying event to the chronological story of this family's life. Jakes grows into a quiet, thoughtful, serious boy who is kind to a kid who is bullied for being "weird." SPOILER

The whole topic of mass shootings is handled very well. People immediately become a mob of furious, blaming hyenas, assuming that since Jake was friends with the shooter, he must have been involved as well.
I won't give away the ending. It is difficult but believable (I am so sick of books that end vaguely or ambiguously, which seems to be a trend today. This book does not end vaguely.) We get to see this family arrive at a healing place. No dogs die, that is one of my worst triggers.
Bryan Reardon is a Talented author!! Hoping for more books from him.

Riveting!

We read this novel in our Book Club. A very interesting read considering today’s society, but I had hoped for a different ending.....
