Features & Highlights

  • Stanley peered up into the shadows above the stage. There was a colorful blaze of fabric amidst the burgundy curtains and canvas backdrops. He moved closer, trying to get a better view from a different angle.“Hey, what’s this play about anyway?” Stanley asked. “Is it a Western?”“No, it’s a drama,” Rosie replied.“How come you need a dummy hanging from a rope?”She looked over quickly. “No one gets hanged in the play.”“Sure looks like it. Up there.”Rosie looked up to where he directed and saw the caftan and silk pants ruffling in the slight breeze of the theater twenty feet over the stage. “Oh, sweet heavens! Stanley,” she screamed. “That’s Faye!”Faye McMullen was murdered in cold blood at Winneshiek Theater and Mary O’Reilly and Police Chief Bradley Alden have to discover who done it before the murderer gets the chance to get rid of the prime witness... Mary O’Reilly.

Quick, enjoyable read

Word is getting out in the small town of Freeport, Illinois, about Mary O’Reilly’s skill in solving crime and helping dead people go to the light, and it could be her undoing. An extremely unpleasant woman, Faye McMullen who fancies herself a grande dame, gets killed and the line of suspects is long. She used people, she blackmailed people, and she just generally treated people like crap, so her getting strung up at the town theater wasn’t really a surprise. There are a lot of suspects with secrets to keep, and the one who did the killing wants that secret to remain hidden and will go to great lengths, including harming Mary, to keep it so.

Mary was a Chicago cop until a brush with death on the job gave her the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. In book 4 of this series, Mary and her boyfriend, Police Chief Bradley Alden, are on the outs because he thinks she betrayed him by keeping a secret about his dead wife. But he needs Mary’s help to solve Faye’s murder, so they are thrown together in an award dance. Their relationship is further complicated by the arrival of a handsome Scottish professor who can see dead people on his own.

I like this series. The dialogue is entertaining, the supporting characters are complex and have lives of their own, rather than just being foils for Mary. I enjoy how the author lets them take center stage, but not take over the books. While the basic plots are somewhat predictable, there is still something interesting and appealing that makes me want to read more – maybe it’s the relationship between Mary and Bradley, or Mary’s new sidekick – a poisoned former fire fighter who is a huge flirt and who isn’t ready to cross over, or the support of Mary’s friends and extended family. And the stories of the ghosts are always interesting.

These books are quick and easy reads for me, perfect for the gym or to pass time while waiting for an appointment. If you were a fan of “Ghost Whisperer,” you will enjoy this long-running series (I believe there are 18 books available in the series so far). I’ll be reading more.
