This is easily the worst book I've ever read and I finished ...

This is easily the worst book I've ever read and I finished the Twilight series. The protagonist, Dylan, is cold, bordering on psychopathic. She displays no emotion at her untimely death, no sympathy for the single mother she left behind, or any goal beyond securing the affections of her equally unfeeling guide to the afterlife, Tristan. Tristan, an immortal Ferryman who takes the form of a dreamy young man to make Dylan feel comfortable (what 16 year old girl feels comfortable around a boy she's attracted to?) likes Dylan because she doesn't whine like all of the other people (including murder victims and small children who died of prolonged illness) he guides to the afterlife. She's his second favorite charge, next to the literal Nazi. It is a sad state of affairs when a literal Nazi is more sympathetic than any other characters.

Long story short, if you like walking and horrifyingly callous teens/immortal beings disguised as teens, this is the book for you. I had to read this for work, you can still escape.

A very unique read.

This truly has to be one of the most imaginative love stories I’ve ever read.

It’s hard to discuss why without completely spoiling the plot (I honestly would recommend even avoiding the synopsis), but I can honestly say I have never read a book like this.

I’m always a big fan of strong character development, and Dylan is a great example of that. I actually really liked how she even had that realization of how much she had grown throughout the course of the book.

If you’re a fan of a good love story, magical realism, and/or the paranormal then I can’t recommend this book enough. If you love all of those things, you won’t regret picking this one up.

It’s clever and exciting, filled with feels, and all around just different from the “regular reading experience”. A very unique read.

The story to me feels complete. I’m not entirely sure what the sequels are going to be like considering how pleased I am with the ending of Ferryman, but I’m excited to see what McFall dreamed up.

A myth reimagined... poetic and dreamlike. A mesmerising read.

After passing away in a train crash, fifteen-year-old Dylan must trek across a barren landscape, on her way to the afterlife. The wasteland is populated by wraiths eager to consume the souls of the newly dead, and Dylan makes this arduous and perilous journey under the protection of her guide, Tristan, the ferryman. A slow burn romance ensues. I sunk into the story straight away, wooed by the poetic and dreamlike nature of the prose. The author's Goodreads site says that her novels take straightforward romantic narratives and hurl them into unusual and extreme settings, and that's an apt description of this story. A fresh take on first love, and a myth reimagined, Ferryman makes for a mesmerising read.
