Description

"Finally! A well-written, well-referenced, thorough examination of the raw dog food debate. Dr. Brady provides a detailed summary of all the issues, leaving the reader well-educated and ready to engage in a knowledgable conversation with raw-ignorant or naive pet professionals looking for more information. A fantastic gift for your favourite veterinarian." Dr. Karen Becker, DVM "In this masterfully researched and written exposé, Conor Brady details the raw truth about canine nutrition; why dry dog food is so damaging, how modern research is designed to sell product, never to find truth, and the enormous benefits that only a fresh raw and whole food diet can provide. A valuable addition to the serious raw feeder's library." Dr. Ian Billinghurst, best-selling author of Give Your Dog a Bone "This remarkable book is the first of its kind. Researched comprehensively and meticulously detailed, it remains pleasantly readable and credible to the academic and home raw food enthusiast alike. It is a must for everyone with even a passing interest in species-appropriate nutrition for dogs. Dr. Nick Thompson, Founder of the Raw Feeding Vet Society After college, I spent five years in guide dogs as a pup supervisor and guide dog trainer. It was while I was working in Guide Dogs in Australia that the true powers of raw feeding came to light. That was 14 years ago. The time since, bar a couple of years as a producer myself, I have spent as a full-time writer, speaker and dedicated advocate for natural canine food and health, much of which you can find at my website www.dogsfirst.ie. As a dog lover and keen researcher, the subject fascinated and consumes me, providing me with near bottomless rabbit holes that demand exploration. I live with my wife and daughter in Wicklow, Ireland and am proud father to a to a slightly odd blue roan cocker called Dudley. What he lacks in brains and finesse he makes up with single-minded determination, though that statement is equally true for the both of us. Dr Conor Brady, BSc. PhD. Anim. Behav.

Features & Highlights

  • "Modern canine nutrition demands we trust the science more so than actually understand it because to pull back the curtain just a little reveals the magic show for what it is – a very clever illusion."
  • From the vet health professional to canine professional to the avid canine enthusiast, Feeding Dogs is a fascinating, at times shocking and utterly essential portrayal of canine nutrition today. With a clear and tangible passion for the subject but with an entertaining, highly readable style, Dr Conor Brady forensically translates the available research on a great variety of topics, detailing for us not only what dogs should eat but what they are currently being fed. Crucially, modern diet strategies are linked to many of the diseases that plague our pets today, including obesity, cancer, pancreatitis and bloat. As the scientific and corporate tricks reveal themselves, the fantasy of a 'complete' diet falls away, replaced with the knowledge that formulating a balanced dog diet by ourselves is not only uncomplicated but utterly essential to their health and longevity. With more than 500 pages and 1200 references, Feeding Dogs is the most thorough examination of the canine nutrition debate to date. Over four large sections, it provides:
  • Section 1: An examination of what the dog consumes when left to his own devices and the biological and physiological machinery that facilitates that process.
  • Section 1: An examination of what the dog consumes when left to his own devices and the biological and physiological machinery that facilitates that process.
  • Section 2: A thorough presentation of the major issues with ultra-processed kibble including the effects of excessive carbohydrates, insufficient protein, erratic nutrient contents and hazardous microbiology on the health of the dog. All these chapters will be a first for most vets. Also, for the first time, the scientific evidence in support of raw feeding is collated including head-to-head studies that examine both dry and raw-fed dog populations and the effects of poor nutrition on behaviour.

Every dog owner should read this

This book is hands down the BEST information available about raw feeding for dogs. Let me be clear - I was not a fan of raw feeding previously. I am a retired veterinary technician and was taught that commercial dry kibble was the only thing to feed dogs. I felt there was not a lot of evidence to support the idea of raw feeding until recently when I had yet another of my own dogs diagnosed with cancer. I also worked in rescue for many years and I now live with 17 rescue dogs. I have senior dogs, special needs dogs and dogs with medical issues like seizures, allergies, kidney failure, and as I mentioned cancer. I started looking into raw feeding in the summer of 2020 and to my surprise found that there was an entire community of people out there sharing information. Even better - the information was based on decades of feeding dogs raw food. The biggest argument against raw feeding has been that there is not a lot of science to support it. Until now - Dr. Brady has the evidence and the science to support the practice of raw feeding being healthier for our dogs. He is also a wonderful writer and pretty hilarious. This book is packed with information and explains the argument for raw feeding and why it is superior to kibble. Thank goodness there are people like Conor Brady out there sharing this important information for dog lovers.

Your diet & dogs diet will change

I bought this book over concerns about commercial dog food and the ingredients in them. Not only does this book give insight on how commercial dog food is manufactured, it goes into depth about nutrition, what dogs were born to eat and how these food are wreaking havoc with their systems and may be the cause of pancreatitis, bloat, cancer and obesity. It's not just about raw diets but why that is a better diet and what to look for in food. It definitely reminded me that high carbs are a major culprit for both dogs and myself. Comprehensive and a great resource.

Thank you for this book!!!!! It’s all working!!!

Boy; if you have ever tried to make your dogs meals healthier, this is the place to start as it will quickly explain WHY. A quick, good paced read with deep scientific info - everything is a lifetime of research and evidence, but also explained in language for us non-scientists. Compelling read and info; you won’t be able to stop yourself from scrambling out the door to get what your dog needs to keep him or her HEALTHY. Stop problems before they start, or give a heckuva kick if not total success in reversing. Forget the “That’ll be another 2 thousand dollars; sorry, we STILL don’t know what’s wrong with your dog, but here’s some MORE antibiotics just in case. Again”. The answer, my friend, is quality food, and quality vet care, and this book makes it easy to do.

The BEST book I have ever read about Feeding Dogs.

My Vet was upset because I switched to a raw diet for my dog. Her health improved overnight. He looks and acts healthier. My Vet gets products from Purina and was pushing their food. Now I know why - and I now understand why my dog had so many health problems. BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!!

As a vet tech, I LOVED this book!

I've been a vet tech for almost 10yrs. I don't always conform to the traditional views on veterinary medicine and feeding. I LOVED reading this book, mainly for the unbelievable amount of studies sited and the authors sarcasm. I don't feed my dogs a raw diet, but I do homecook and my cat is fed a commercial raw diet. Great information whether you are a beginner to the raw world and wonder why so many people are adamant about it or have been feeding raw for a decade and would like to see the studies.

Best, most informative, life changing book ever!

To say this book is a MUST read is an understatement. I only wish the title was different as this book is a far more than dry vs. kibble. It illuminate so much more in the world of health be it for our pets or ourselves. Reading it will definitely make you much more informed of the inner workings of our completely broken pet industry. Dr. Connors inner twining of human, dog and cat health facts along with revealing truths about the pet industry as a whole shows how our pets health and well being has been on a downward slope for decades, why it’s getting worse and more costly. After seeing the facts in full display you will undoubtedly improve the life of your pet and yourself and feel compelled to help others do the same. It’s really a life altering book!

A MUST for all dog owners & raw feeders

This book should be in every raw feeder's library, if not every dog owner. Well written, thoroughly researched and comprehensively referenced. This text is crucial to understanding the information involved in our current dog nutrition crisis, the conflicts of interest and institutional failures on all levels that are at play, and the lack of regulation and enforcement we falsely assume will keep our dogs safe and healthy, despite numerous recalls, thousands of dead pets, and a steady increase of chronic degenerative health issues across all breeds. If you have a dog, read this book. It's that simple.

BETTER THAN MY COURSES ON ANIMIAL NUTRUTION

This book is amazing. I been cross checking sources as I read it. I took several classes in animal nutrition and do reseach in another field. I have grown up on working ranches, I have doing a deep dive these last three years into dogs, mostly out of necessity from choosing to purchase a challege dog.

He presents his sources in an easily digestable for and by chapter three has a writing style than had reading all day because I could not put it down.

Its the how, when, where why and we are going for a deep dive into dog nutrition.

I will forever be quoting "A donut is an excellent source of engery. So is a Mars Bar. What we need to ask is, is it appropriate?" I called half the phd's I knew in various fields to show them that with its context.

Truth about feeding your dogs the right way

One of the best books on the market if you want to know the truth about feeding dogs and the sheer decline in the health over the past 50 years. Arthritis, cancer, inflammation and itching can all be attributed to commercial pet food and the sheer number of carbohydrates that your dogs don’t need. Read this book and become an informed owner so you can help your animals and save money!
