Description

Praise for the BONE series: New York Times Bestseller USA Today Bestseller TIME magazine Top Ten Graphic Novel ★ "This is first-class kid lit : exciting, funny, scary, and resonant enough that it will stick with readers for a long time." -- Publishers Weekly , starred review "A true accomplishment. Not only is it a terrific graphic-novel series, but it's a superb example of storytelling." -- School Library Journal " BONE is storytelling at its best , full of endearing, flawed characters whose adventures run the gamut from hilarious whimsy to thrilling drama." -- Entertainment Weekly "Spectacular." -- SPIN magazine "Jeff Smith can pace a joke better than almost anyone in comics." -- Neil Gaiman, winner of the Newbery Medal for The Graveyard Book SLJGr 3 Up–Exiled from their home, the Bone cousins have discovered a beautiful but frightening world in the valley. The tone darkens in this volume as their friend Thorn learns of her tragic past, the bloodthirsty rat creatures become even more menacing, and war appears imminent. Already a gripping, striking work in black and white, Bone is even more appealing in color. The lighter palettes highlight the story's playful humor, while darker shades heighten the immense drama unfolding in the valley. This offering should bring Smith's work a deservedly wider audience.–Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY Jeff Smith is the New York Times bestselling author of the award-winning series BONE, which is published in more than 30 countries and is among Time magazine’s Ten Best Graphic Novels of All Time. BONE was a pioneer in comics publishing for kids in U.S. bookstores when it launched Scholastic’s graphic novel imprint, Graphix, in 2005. Smith’s other award-winning and acclaimed comics include SHAZAM! The Monster Society of Evil, RASL, Little Mouse Gets Ready , BONE: Rose , and BONE: Tall Tales . Smith splits his time between Columbus and Key West with his wife and business partner, Vijaya Iyer, where he is working on his current project, TUKI.

I'm glad I had a kid or I'd have never gotten into this series

I remember seeing this on the shelf of the comic book store I'd frequent in my twenties. Shoot it was probably at Borders when I worked there my college sophomore year. A decade later, looking for appropriate, gripping stories for my nine year old a very helpful man at "All in a dream" (which according to Yelp reviews I must have been appropriately respectful of his collection) proffered this series.

I had thought "Bone" was some Disney crap storm along the lines of "Kingdom Hearts" (excuse me I'd rather play the quintesential RPG - Final Fantasy).

Back to "Bone." Classic character types and good tension. Of course it is about good vs. evil. But what story isn't. There's thwarted romance, hidden lineage. You know the good parts from fairy tales and dramas.

If only my son would read them faster. I'm glad he does read them though. He loves the series and the books serve as an excellent reward for focusing in school and helping around the house.

Don't let your child read this series!!!!!

I was completely shocked and horrified that this book is marketed to young children by Scholastic. My eight year old son received Bone as a gift. I could not believe that the content contains characters smoking. This is NOT a book that should be given to a child for that reason alone! After doing some research I read that Scholastic at first did not want to include the inappropriate content. They decided to leave it in the book when the author refused to edit it. As a parent I do not think any child should be reading a book that "glamorizes" smoking. I am also disgusted that Scholastic, which is a name parents trust, would allow this series to be marketed to young children.

My 9 year old loves the series. Written in a comic form, he devoured these books within a week. I kept having to buy the next one and then we donated them to his teacher's library so his friends could read. Bones is a creature who lives with his cousins and goes on adventures with his cousins. My son couldn't put them down.

NOT for 8-9 year olds

I'm only giving 3 stars because I believe it's a good book except the age level is wrong. The subject matter within is above an 8 or 9 year old--I was shocked at some of the topics within.

Get your kids to replace their digital universe with the Bone universe

I bought this used on the cheap because this particular installment was checked out from our local library and I could not wait in line for it to be returned. Great series for kids in the upper elementary and Jr. High range...but, really, I purchased it for myself, shhh, don't tell. The story line is just too well done, the characters fleshed out so nicely, and the humor is enjoyable. All this gives the entire Bone universe such a warm, exciting feel. I ended up purchasing the library binding of the entire set because after reading them all, I concluded our family can get so much out of multiple readings. My son is five and loves to have me explain the pictures to him. We are going to try play acting bits of the story together. A great alternative to electronic media, these books will wake up your kid's mind and revive your own stagnating adult imagination. What better way to transition children from hyper visual electronics to reading than combining the action-packed artwork of Jeff Smith with his epic writing. It's Lord of the Rings for kiddies.

I love this series. My 6 yr old grandson and I are hooked. The artwork is exquisite; the story and characters embody all the human drama and big themes of the best novels, in my mind.
