Description

“If ever there was a teacher who could gather the reins of the mind to gallop into the land of the heart (and take us with her), it is Cynthia Bourgeault. This exquisitely written love story distills the intricacies of the esoteric Western traditions into a transformational elixir—both rigorous and luminous—simultaneously intoxicating and sobering. This book is nothing less than a map to the meeting of the worlds at the crossroads of our own souls, one the mapmaker urges us to abandon the minute our heart sees the way.” —Mirabai Starr, author of Wild Mercy “In Eye of the Heart Cynthia Bourgeault invites us on a journey that is profoundly personal and opens us to a truly fresh and panoramic vision of the purpose of human existence. In bringing to our attention the importance of the imaginal realms—the levels of consciousness between our physical reality and our ultimate divine source—she fills an enormous gap in the current conversations on spirituality. Cynthia has an amazing ability to take potentially complex ideas and to explain them with clarity and kindness. Only someone who has actually traversed these realms and knows them well could accomplish such a feat, and she does so with beauty and grace. Any serious student of the Western traditions ought to partake of these teachings. You will be grateful you did! —Russ Hudson, co-author of The Wisdom of the Enneagram “A brilliant synthesis that both situates the imaginal world and gives it more meaning than it has previously had. . . . [Bourgeault] is a true representative of the Western spiritual tradition.” —from the afterword by A. H. Almaas “ Eye of the Heart is an immensely original piece of thinking, feeling, writing. There is nothing like it. It opens new terrain, plants new seeds, starts them on their way toward the light.” —Roger Lipsey, author of Gurdjieff Reconsidered “By weaving together mystical wisdom, the Fourth Way, and the authority of her own experience, Cynthia Bourgeault masterfullyxa0charts a new path of interior transformation through the heart's ability to know and choose the way of love and service. I learned a lot from this book, and I bet you will too.” —Carl McColman, author of The Big Book of Christian Mysticism “Reading Eye of the Heart is a powerful and clarifying experience. The weaving of personal, metaphysical, and contemporary political insights is amazing, seamless, and intercessory in and of itself. We need this kind of weaving and interpenetrating in our culture just as we need it between the realms.” —Tim Shriver, author of Fully Alive CYNTHIA BOURGEAULT is a modern-day mystic, Episcopal priest, and theologian. She divides her time between solitude at her seaside hermitage in Maine and traveling globally to promote the rediscovery of the Christian contemplative path. She is a core faculty member at the Center for Action and Contemplation and founding director of an international network of Wisdom Schools. Cynthia's articles and essays have appeared in many journals and publications, and she is the author of numerous books, including The Wisdom Jesus , The Meaning of Mary Magdalene , The Holy Trinity and the Law of Three , and The Heart of Centering Prayer .

  • Eye of the Heart
  • , Cynthia Bourgeault investigates the imaginal realm--an energetic realm well known to the mystical traditions but often forgotten in our own times. It is invisible to the physical eye, but clearly perceptible through the eye of the heart. The imaginal realm has long been associated with the personal world of dreams, prophecy, and oracles, and it also points toward a higher vision of our human purpose that is both evolutionary and collective. Bourgeault explores both aspects of imaginal reality and shows readers how we can cooperate more fully with its guidance in our lives.Expertly blending her own lived experiences with research on the imaginal realm, Bourgeault explores how her personal relationships have helped to bring these teachings into sharper focus and the role this realm plays in Christian and other mystical traditions. She delves into the connections between our inner consciousness and what happens in the world, exploring the transformative energy and governing conventions that make the manifestation of this realm possible.
  • Eye of the Heart
  • presents Bourgeault's spiritual journey with the imaginal realm and encourages readers to attune their hearts for the well-being of the world.

A "heady" attempt to slay intimacy with anything divine..

Lifeless, mechanist, too many word "thoughts". A disappointment that a "feminine" mind would dissect the wonders of the forever changing and transforming, the mystical mystery, in such a dry treatise on what exactly ?? The imaginal realm [to me] suggests a felt sense of the divine or the multiverse. The imaginal realm speaking about the "eye of the heart" suggests a deep communion with the "barely" knowable. This book so felt like a tweezer pinching as it plucks at the "eye of the heart"; an experience of a "walk in the male analytical mind" suggesting to the reader that so many words and charts and professorial words would move one to some deeper connection. My mystic was left barren and saddened at what intellectual discourse has done to make the moving changing life force so lifeless and rob us of a sense of wonder in service to mind over heart.

Highly recommend

I'm about half-way through and really getting a lot out of this book, as is usual with Ms. Bourgeault's works. Most notably, imaginal causality has been in play including the book itself; three times already I've read content that was exactly what I've been musing on and encountering in my life. Ms. Bourgeault's work never fails to take my understandings of these principles deeper and confer more sophistication. This book is filling in some conceptual gaps that will take my work to the next level. It's clear Ms. Bourgeault has not only thought extensively about the concepts present in the book, but has the experiential knowledge as well. It's rare that I feel so inspired and expanded from reading a book, but with Ms. Bourgeault's work this is consistently so. I recommend her books for anyone wanting to deepen on a spiritual path, Christian or otherwise.

Astonishing depth of insight

Cynthia’s writing over the last two decades has been a tour of essential Wisdom teachings as well as a witness to the evolution of her own heart’s perceptions. This latest volume speaks directly to the times we are living through. The need for a better way. The need for “fruits of the spirit” to do their work: love, joy, gentleness, kindness ...

STRUGGLING THROUGH THIS

This is not the "typical" Cynthia Bourgeault spiritual book. The concepts are NOT new to me but as I continue to struggle through the book and I feel as though I'm in a science or math class. The writing style does not speak to my heart as her other books have....perhaps that's because of her frequent references to and reliance on other mystics.
I have always thought and felt that Cynthia Bourgeault has her own unique, individual way of explaining, uncovering and sharing vital spiritual knowledge that spoke directly to the heart of the reader. I know that there are different realms and the laws of one realm do not apply to the laws of another, that "existence" in each realm is different even though each realm is connected...as all life is interconnected. For people who do not have a wide vocabulary, a dictionary in the back of the book for be helpful for people unfamiliar with many words she uses. I will continue my struggle reading this book because I am a seeker of spiritual knowledge and know I will always find something to treasure during the struggle. I will update this after after I've finished "Eye of the Heart."

What We Are here for and What We can Do

Cynthia Bourgeault's latest book, Eye of the Heart, captures decades of personal journey and divine encounter in a seamless fabric that offers a map of hope that has the capacity to transform from the inside out everything you may have garnered as 'just the way it is,' in a way that doesn't offer a way out, but a way of total engagement with the world(s) in which we find ourselves. More than a book simply for seekers, it is a cosmic invitation to embrace life with a responsibility grounded in human/cosmic/divine interconnectivity that does not throw you out into a mental la-la land, but rather invites you to honestly confront with your heart, mind and body experiences some possible delusions we may have about what is real about life and death, and how every small conscious energetic effort we make contributes to the exciting and energetic and honors the Divine in a truly human dimension that we may have never considered before. Told from a very personal and vulnerable humility, the book resounds with an unflinching spaciousness that will enlarge your total Heart! Meant to be read several times over.

Fascinating Take on the Nature of Reality and the Universe

Although Cynthia can at times become very "heady" and intellectual, which left my mind reeling. (I have no background in Gurdjieff works) Still, I found many truths in her descriptions of the imaginal realm. I would recommend this book but only with the caveat to keep reading and not get bogged down in the schematics.

A culmination of Bourgeault’s greatest work to date

What a rare and sweet gift it is in this world when words in a book, talking about healing the vibrational frequency of our planet through the conscious work of transmitting the Fruits of the Spirit, repeatedly breaks you open into full body vibrations and leaves you with tears in your eyes. But so it is when reading Cynthia Bourgeault’s Eye of the Heart - a spiritual masterpiece belonging to a genre all its own. One part flash memoir, one part Imaginal seeing, three parts confession of the heart’s longing. And oh, the places you will go! If you’re looking for one book that takes on the ancient, existential questions: Who are we? Why are we here? Where are we going? I know of no greater one.

Wisdom School indeed! A taste of this book prepares you for the feast online....

“Eye of the Heart” is mysticism with footnotes, wide scholarly reading, and an unflinching honesty coming from deep spiritual generousity. A brilliant creative mind paired with scholarly skills can sometimes impede the development of the heart. Bourgeault shows how mind can harmonize with heart, how intelligence can become an asset for sensitively experiencing the cosmic flow.

Using her own life as content, Cynthia Bourgeault provides a revised theological road map and numerous practical recipes for training the overstimulated mind so it can work comfortably under the guidance of the heart. Heart vision can be re-discovered through practices drawn from religious lights like Gurdjieff and Boehme. And in an online seminar based on this book, the author Bourgeault shows how to practice the ways of the heart.

The limits of book reading and writing dissolve in Bourgeault's filmed live teaching based on "Eye of the Heart." In the online five-day seminar, she walks students through many practices mentioned in the book. So those who enjoyed the taste of this book have a rich feast awaiting them in the online seminar that can be found by searching for Imaginal Wisdom School with Cynthia Bourgeault. A deep learning experience awaits them in the Wisdom School!

After reading several of Bourgeault's books, this reviewer made a 2022 retreat out of her online 2020 seminar based on "Eye of the Heart." A second reading of the book yields so much more than the first encounter with this text that already stood out as a creative contribution to classical metaphysics. There is much more here than intellectual thrills! There is indeed a profound heart behind the sharp eyes and watchful gaze of this masterful theologian.
