Description

An interesting, relevant study that addresses scientific concepts as they've emerged over years of study and experimentation, along with topics found in current events (pollution and global warming among them). Add to that the fact that the author writes from a solidly Creationist, Christian worldview, and you have a winner in my book. --Eclectic Homeschool Online<br \><br \>Author Dr. Jay L. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! He attended the University of Rochester to study chemistry and, while there, became fascinated with nuclear chemistry, eventually earning a PhD in that field. For several years, he did research under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation while serving as an assistant professor of chemistry. Dr. Wile has won many awards for excellence in teaching and research. In addition, he has authored or co-authored nine books.

Good Science, Bad History

I don't dispute the science in this book but I do dispute the history. The author leaves his area of expertise to put forth the myth that Galileo was persecuted by a fearful, ignorant Catholic Church. This is an issue lots of people have an opinion about but few have actually studied. Wile is one of them. For a full treatment, with footnotes to back up the history, please see the book "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization," especially the chapter: The Church and Science. In it the author Dr. Thomas Woods - a real historian with four Ivy League degrees - explains the enormous contribution the Church made to science. Examples: There are over 30 craters on the moon named after Jesuits who discovered them. Europe's universities were founded by religious of the Catholic Church. Many of the Church's clerics were famous scientists - like Copernicus himself. He was never persecuted for teaching that the sun could be the center of the solar system. What does that tell you? There is more to the Galileo case than most people realize. In short - Galileo was invited to Rome to make his case. He was admired very much by bishops and cardinals. His trouble was that he did not have adequate mathematics to support his "theory" - which was then very new. So the Church wanted him to teach it as a "theory" and not as a fact. But he refused. What's more he was suggesting changes in Theology - not his area of expertise. The author of this book, Dr. Wile - a protestant - does a similar thing in this science book. He gets into history which he knows little about.

Move over Bob Jones & Abeka; there's a new sheriff in town.

I recall the early years of homeschooling, the 80s, when good curriculum was hard to find. Then Saxon math came along and revolutionized math for those parents and children who hated math. What Saxon did for math; Jay Wile has done for science. Except I'd say Jay Wile has done it better. This is science by a scholar who knows how to break down the complicated concepts to the level of the common man. Nothing is lost in the translation except, perhaps, a previously poor attitude toward science by the student. Children who hated science before will fall in love with Dr. Jay Wile's way of teaching. The experiments are fun & use readily available items in the home one *actually* has on hand. He's won this home schooling family over for good. Move over Bob Jones and Abeka; there's a new sheriff in town.

Not a science book.

Loaded with single author bias. For example, the atmospheric science module attempts a one-sided cost-benefit analysis of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) use, and concludes that because they are efficient refrigerants and can be used in agriculture, banning them to prevent ozone destruction will result in loss of human life. He omits any discussion of the increased incidence of skin cancers, declining rates of photosynthesis (and hence negative impacts upon agriculture, oxygen production, and carbon sequestration), and other impacts associated with the ozone loss caused by CFCs. This is only one of the hundreds of similar incidences found throughout Wile's publications. His writing, which is openly Christian (which is fine, as long as the reader knows that) habitually laces science with his own political viewpoints.

Great Science, Not Great History

Unfortunately, Wile repeats the same silly lies - the made-up history that Galileo was horribly mistreated by a mean, Catholic Church. (In fact, it was the Church which defended Galileo against the protestants, who were horrified at his theories. And no, Galileo never proved his ideas about the earth's rotation. He enjoyed the Church's money and protection, even after being rebuked for stating his theories should be accepted as fact until proven false.) Hope Wile's books can be corrected, so they can be enjoyed for excellence in scientific and historical analysis.

Creationist viewpoints, but still the best homeschool physical science text I have found

The science in it is very good and easy to understand. The experiments are fun and interesting. Be aware that this book is written from a creationist point of view, so if, like me, you do not accept that particular assertion, be warned that he does raise the argument for why the earth is only several thousand years old, and more than once, but it is inserted in such a way in the book that it can be disregarded. My daughter and I discussed the occurrences when she encountered them and she actually gave me reasons why she did not accept his arguments, so that was a teaching moment in itself. We use it in conjunction with the notebook which makes it very easy to pace and organize the workload for the year.

Good but has serious error

The update is in serious need of updating. It contains a lot of superfluous information. Omit some of the junk and add a little more science and the book would be great. One major error is his discussion on the CFC's (refrigerants), his conclusions about our lives being threatened by the changes to CFC's is blatantly false. Good for a middle schooler but the book is not high school quality.

One Star

It is truly a shame this book's material is being taught to children...children who are our future.

Desperately needs update

They need to rework their understanding of science since 2007. A lot has changed. Like, for example, global warming is a real thing. Ive never seen such a politically-motivated book! Ridiculous!

Worst Physical Science Book I Have Ever Seen

I cannot believe how this book ever made it through any level of academic review if it did at all. I am a retired Science Teacher and this year helped out a Home School Tutorial who had adopted this book. It is extremely poorly written with a bias that even as a Christian I could not stomach. The experiments for the most part don't work and there are places where the facts are just flat wrong. In electrostatics it discusses photon transfer instead of electrons, completely downplays global warming etc etc. I am fortunate that I am able to shift the tutorial away from this Apologia Garbage and get some proper texts.
