Great book but be careful.

Many people have said it but I will repeat anyway...the motivational factor of this book alone is worth the price. Joe calls you out for the excuses that keep you from reaching your health goals. The work outs are great and do get fast results, however, I strongly advise getting a personal trainer to teach you the correct form on the exercises and such before diving headlong into the program. Also do not slack on your warm ups. Once you get to the 5th and 6th week the work outs are pretty intense and long and it is easy to try to take short cuts to save time. I did this and wound up tearing up my shoulder through a combination of cold muscles and poor mechanics. I "learned" how to lift doing high school football and had a lot of bad habits. Even though the descriptions in the book tell you how to do the exercise I didn't get my "aha" until the orthopedist was explaining the mechanics that caused my injury and what you need to do to avoid it.

Short version is this is a great book but just make sure you know what you are doing and as Joe says, "Check the ego."

Good book! I enjoyed reading it

Good book! I enjoyed reading it, and even got some good information that I had never thought about before. If you are NEW/NOVICE to bodybuilding.... this book is for you!

HOWEVER, If you have several years of training, health, nutrition experience, you may only receive a few pointers (like I did.) Overall, a good book to get the new guys motivated!

Had never heard of Joe before this book. And I trust with his recent relationships, he will only gain more popularity.

An odd one but...

I read this for many reasons I read this book:
1. I am a fan of his. For me he is my second pick for actors.
2. Great pictures, I am also a photographer as a hobby so the pictures was great in detail.
3. It is always good to know the actor/actress that you like to watch or even idolis him on many levels.
4. The workout I am big on healthy and fit living, and you never stop learning on the subject.

The things I did not know was in this book:
1. Do I really care about your ex girlfriends? not really, I can read stars for that crap and yes stars mag. is crap.
2. Do I care about who all Joe Manganiello knows and who he meet that was famous as he was coming into his own?
3. Do I need to know anything that is new or can been seen on t.v. with interviews?
The answer to all of the above is NO.

With all that said, it is a GREAT book for inspiration and a "damn why didn't I think of that." type moment when it comes to working out or even just getting you ass up and go. I think it would be a good idea for teens to read the book for many reason, one is you can bully who you want now but just wait in a couple of years and see who they are now. Two, just because you look one way does not mean you do not have the power, control to look the way you want, IF YOU WANT IT.

So all and all I did like the book, it cleared things up on parts of the work out and if you take a the three things I really did not care about it would be a must for body building and work out for people. So if you are someone you know is into fitness or even if you want your teen to know they have control to change something and not sit around bitching about it, GET the book.

A quick hit of motivation

I read this book quickly and found it motivated me, even though his workouts are too advanced for new re-starters like myself. They will be something I will aim for in 6 months or a year. I recommend Arnie's Encyclopeadia of Body Building. It has no motivational baloney. Just good advice and information on body building. Also Bodybuilding Anatomy by Nick Evans and Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe. All these have good information on exercises, what they do, and how to do them.

I'm still drinking booze and eating mayonnaise but got through EVOLUTION and am better for it

Joe's physique is astonishing and he seems like a genuine nice guy. I saw he had a stack of these books in his trailer on set -- he gave a signed copy to one of the extras -- so I knew he also truly believed in what he had written. I later bought it and was inspired to commit to his "werewolf" 6-week workout. I creeped out into 12 weeks as I was doing a ton of long distance running and swimming, but even so it was transformational and results/gains were really noticeable. I have been in shape and active all my life and had never actually sweated doing weights at the gym before. This workout will have you sweating each time! The key lies in lack of rest between sets - so I was forced to give up gym chatting or texting or zoning out while sitting on the military press thinking about what to have for dinner. I'm actually not sure what to do now that the program is over - (what now, Joe?! Rinse, repeat?) -- I feel lost without guidance I relied upon. As other reviewers have mentioned, the workouts definitely had to be amended due to the machines being taken up by other people at the gym. It's unrealistic to expect that the (often) three machines you need to rotate around will not be occupied.
Joe's book is inspirational and results measurable, but on the critical side - he says to give up alcohol entirely (he says something to the effect of "just give up all that") which is, ahem, easier said than done! I bet he's REAL fun at parties. He's also got something against mayonnaise, which I'd never heard was an impediment to lean mean fitness. The book also feels like it's written for people who just can't get enough of the gym, and speaks in terms of making sure to not lift too heavy (no problem there!) and making sure to do your cardio, even though you hate it. I do tons of cardio and hate the gym, so I didn't feel the book targeted someone who considers weights a chore. The most frustrating part of this book are the exercise descriptions, which are found at the back of the book in no particular order. For each workout I'd have to flip and flip through the back material (with his glossies getting in the way) to locate all the bloody exercises I was meant to do that day. This trouble is likely resolved easily with links in an e-book version, but here's hoping Joe's next book edition includes an index for easier reference.
