Description

“The most helpful thing that Borg has to offer is a contextual introduction to each of the 27 books of the New Testament . . . An eminently readable and eye-opening addition to religion shelves, as well as a new and fascinating way to read the New Testament.” — Booklist (starred review) “Borg, a prolific biblical scholar, guides the reader into understanding . . . the process by which the biblical material developed. . . . A good guide to the background and content of the New Testament.” — Library Journal “Marcus Borg has always been a great teacher. In his newest book Evolution of the Word, his teaching skills are obvious as he opens the New Testament, not only to its original, historical order, but also to insightful, refreshing and dramatic insights.” — John Shelby Spong, author of Re-Claiming the Bible for a Non-Religious World “Borg introduces each book of the New Testament and, for the first time in most churches, readers will be receiving these sacred texts in the order men and women received them nearly 2,000 years ago. . . Evolution of the Word will light up book discussion groups.” — Read the Spirit “Some may still remember confrontational front-page headlines decades ago pitting Borg and other university-based Bible scholars against Christian traditionalists. However, Borg now is embraced in mainline congregations coast to coast. . . . To put it simply: Marcus Borg has become a friend to growing congregations.” — Read the Spirit In Evolution of the Word, Borg has produced something of great usefulness. Reading the New Testament in the order suggested gives us a new perspective on biblical faith. …[It] tests and challenges our programmed ways of reading Scripture…. that can enrich our faith awareness. — The United Methodist Reporter Everyone knows the New Testament begins with the Gospel of Matthew, but how many know Matthew was actually one of the later books to be written? (It wasn't even the first Gospel!) But Evolution of the Word is not your typical New Testament. Marcus J. Borg, esteemed Bible scholar and bestselling author, shakes up the order of the New Testament as we know it by putting the books in a completely new order—the order in which they were written. By doing so, Evolution of the Word allows us to read these documents in their historical context. For the first time, see how the core ideas of Christianity took shape and developed over time. Borg surveys what we know of the Jewish community of Jesus followers who passed on their stories orally. Into this context emerges the apostle Paul, whose seven authentic letters become the first collected writings that would later become the New Testament. Borg offers helpful introductions for each book so that as we read through these biblical documents, spanning over a century in time, we see afresh what concerns and pressures shaped this movement as it evolved into a new religion. In this groundbreaking format, Borg reveals how a radical and primitive apocalyptic Jewish faith slowly became more comfortable with the world, less Jewish, and more pre- occupied with maintaining power and control. Evolution of the Word promises to change forever how we think about this historic work. Marcus J. Borg (1942–2015) was a pioneering author and teacher whom the New York Times described as "a leading figure in his generation of Jesus scholars." He was the Hundere Distinguished Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University and canon theologian at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, and he appeared on NBC's The Today Show and Dateline , ABC's World News , and NPR's Fresh Air . His books have sold over a million copies, including the bestselling Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time , Reading the Bible Again for the First Time , Jesus , The Heart of Christianity , Evolution of the Word , Speaking Christian , and Convictions . Worth checking out from a library, not owning

I have read all of Borg's other books and loved them. This book wasn't that great. When I saw the preview for it before it was released, I was excited to see what he would be talking about. It was clocked at 500 some pages, which is large for his standard, since most of his books are in the 200's.

Then I picked it up at the library I work at and saw that ~80% of the book is just the NT re-printed with a page or two or three of his introductions or commentaries.

If you have read his previous books, I don't think you will get many new nuggets. I did like his point in the beginning of the book about the difference between letters and books. We call some of the texts in the Bible "The book of Revelations" and so on. Books, according to Borg, are written to audiences that the author does not know, which goes in the face of most Christians who think these books were written to Americans in 2012. Letters, on the other hand, are written to a specific group or someone.

In the end, it is worth breezing through but not reading start to finish or even owning. Many other commentaries are worth owning and even Borgs previous books cover much of what he addresses in this book in regards to dating and ordering of the NT.

The Bible

This is at least the 5th Borg book I've read and I've enjoyed each one. I re-read The First Christmas each year. In "Evolution" I have been fascinated to read his commentary on each book and have learned many new things. However parts of the Bible are inherently boring and repetitive, for instance most of Paul's letters, and "Evolution" can't fix this. "Evolution" certainly provides a useful account of the development of early Chrisitanity firmly based on the earliest accounts. I trust Borg completely as a biblical scholar of distinction.

It is designed for those who are no longer satisfied with what they learned in Sunday school

I have not finished reading this book as yet, but have read several works by this author. It is designed for those who are no longer satisfied with what they learned in Sunday school, and deals with theology in a much more realistic manner. I would recommend this book to stimulate the mind to consider and compare what you might have always thought, with someone who has done extensive research in this area. It will challenge many. I have found Amazon to be a place where you can find very good value when you purchase books.

Insightful and revealing

Nobody does it better than Borg. He writes so clearly, so concisely and helps the reader make connections between biblical text and the forces or factors that shape the books. For me, the New Testament became more alive as a result of Borg's writing. An excellent reference book to add to one's collection.

Best Bible I ever read

I was transplanted to a time and place I never knew existed. Being there while the letters and gospels were being written is the substance of the book. This book did more for my understanding of Christianity than all other new testament texts combined.. I highly recommend.

A different perspective

Borg's introductions to the books of the New Testament alone are invaluable; his insights on the developing spirituality and theology of Christianity create any number of "ah" moments. This is definitely an important addition to your library.

interesting perspective and a must read

Borg writes a very interesting book from a chronological perspective that makes one think and that is a good thing. I read this whole book (which is unusual for me). Borg writes in a compelling way with an open perspective incorporating historical data which gives credence to what he is writing. The book was eye opening and a book that belongs on every Christian's bookshelf.

Excellent book!

This book is a great tool to use when reviewing the New Testament. The summaries are brief and very helpful. The cover sleeve is also an excellent reference tool. Great to have in any theologian's library and well worth the price.
