A Fun and Practical Reference Guide for Sensory Parents, Teachers, and OTs Alike

As an adult with Sensory Processing Disorder, I especially adore Barbara Sher and her joyous, fun approach to helping others deal with sensory issues. Her lighthearted. helpful method is like a breath of fresh air in the midst of a diagnosis that can often feel scary and serious for many sensory children and their parents. In this book, she gently instructs parents on how to use specific games to help children strengthen each one of their senses. Barbara goes through every game in detail, and even includes the age range of the children who'd most benefit from the activity. I know this book will be a treasured resource for parents, teachers, and occupational therapists alike: the perfect reference guide to pick up when you want to engage your favorite little one with sensory sensitivities.

Great book for learning how to play with children with sensory issues

An insightful read that does a wonderful job of both explaining what Sensory Processing Disorder is and how to engage in play with children who have it, but also gets down to the basics of how to just play with children over all. It's easy to get caught up with technology and modern games but this book has some great examples of how to just put all that away and engage children in other ways.

Excellent

Another treat from Barbara Sher. As an OT, this book is geared for parents I work with and describes SPD in lay terms. Activities are simply and use materials available around the house - ideal for sharing with families during home visits. Excellent for families with children with SPD as well as a great tool for pediatric OTs.

A Helpful Read

I like to know the reason behind things and this, to me, is one of the strong points of this publication. The author gives the reader some useful background information about the mechanisms through which human beings perceive the world around us, then gives a brief, but informative, explanation of how these mechanisms work differently in children with SPD. I love the idea of using items that are often found in the home or cheaply purchased to engage in the recommended games and activities; this makes this author’s recommendations easy to follow for those with little financial means. While I won’t say I agree with everything in this book (e.g. – thanking inanimate objects for things), I found it to be very informative and I think it’s likely that I will use some of the strategies herein with my own nephew who falls in the spectrum of SPD.

Fun for all!

I love, love, love this book! I work as an In-Home Counselor and recently we've seen more of an influx of children on the autism spectrum. With that said, my coworkers and I are always looking for new ways to get to know these sweet kiddos and this book is it!!

Barbara Sher is so genuine and thoughtful in the way she lays out these games. This isn't just games though. She breaks down what SPD is and her background with working with children with SPD. She understands because she's been there and that is very refreshing.
I was given this book for free for my honest and unbiased opinion.
