Essential Grammar in Use with Answers: A Self-Study Reference and Practice Book for Elementary Students of English

I have been using the 2nd edition of this book to tutor my brother-in-law and his wife. They've enjoyed the book, but recently, I decided to "upgrade". The book arrived in the mail 2 days ago, and I am absolutely astounded. It's in colour. It's got nicer drawings. It's got the same great format. It's got an even better organization. It's still got a smattering of British-only usages, but I've always thought this more of a feature than a bug, and besides, how hard is it to just say, "Americans say it this way instead"?

I'm impressed with the book, and excited to start using it. Highly recommended for autodidacts and tutoring situations.

English is not my native language and I know very well how difficult is to learn a second language without proper education. I have studied Murphy's books for a long time and recommend his books for everybody. There are a lot of good books out there (I have purchased a whole bunch of them!), but no one bits this one. This book is for elementary students. There are also the intermediate grammar and the advanced grammar - all them are great! It is a must have! Buy with confidence!

I have used this book with my students with great success. The explanations of how to form and use different grammatical constructions in English are clear and precise. The images help beginners learn vocabulary and grammar at the same time. In particular, many foreign learners have difficulty with the structure of questions in English. This book provides good explanations and lots of practice. The book is intended to be for self-study, but I think it is too much for beginners to do alone. As a companion to regular classes, I can recommend it unreservedly.

This really is a GREAT book.
It is British English as all ESL teachers will know.
It is however an American copied BLACK and WHITE version.
The pages are cheap paper - not the coated orange/red paper from the UK version.
It is a straight copy of the UK version but beware.
We ESL teachers buy durable books because lap tops, photo copy machines are not always available.
These pages will rip easily so weigh your options or download the 2nd edition off the net.

My 40 year old husband had a stroke with resulting expressive aphasia. After finishing speech therapy, we bought this book to continue to work on his understanding of grammatical rules for writing and speaking. He's still not 100% back to normal, but his sentence structure improved by probably 25% of so with use of this book.

Best book ever!! I keep buying for my friends who are learning English.
It is a must have! Easy to follow... great tool.

Very happy with this book but was surprised to find that the units don't always reference the area of speech being covered which would have been really helpful.

Very good book for students who are either learning English (ESL) or for anyone wanting to review essential elements of grammar, The book is intuitively organized to readily facilitate assimilation of English fundamentals for speaking or writing. The book's illustrations add interest to the reader.

I sent this book to my girlfriend in Thailand so that she may improve her English writing skills. She really appreciates it and this book has stimulated her interest to improve her English.

I find this book very useful. I'm an english teacher as a foreing
language, and liked it very much. It's clear, precise and with enough exercises for practice. Highly recommend it.
