A beautiful book!

This book is enthralling. It’s a story about a young girl who spends her summers with her Mother in the Congo. The mother runs a sanctuary for the bonobos. This book will page after page have you falling in love with the Bonobo’s. Prior to reading this book I wasn’t very knowledgeable about this primate species but I feel like I learned so much and wish I myself could be at that Sanctuary. The adventure that this young girl goes on when the Sanctuary is taken over by rebel soldiers is one that tests her spirit, and her love for humans and animals. This story is both heart wrenching and beautiful and will stay with you long after the book ends. One concept that is weaved throughout this book is that “sometimes your greatest torment can also be your greatest treasure.”

Navigating the perils of the natural environment while escaping the perils of humanity (war).

Endangered is narrated by a young girl who has a motherly connection to a bonobo ape she rescued. On the eve of her return to the US, a civil breaks out in the Congo and she makes was rather illogical and risky decisions to save her bonobo baby.

Though a work of fiction (the specific civil war is a work of fiction as well, though it is inspired by real such events), the story feels rooted in logic as our young narrator explains the feelings and the rationale behind her actions.

There is a lot of bloody murder and a threat of rape in this book, so if the audience is young, be mindful of these topics.

Worth reading

Our middle school students are reading this and it gives them a feel for working with Bonobos and the DRC. I was in Liberia in 89-90 and interacted with Chimps before and during the Civil war. This book seemed reasonably realistic.

Wonderful, heartwarming and insight into other areas of the world.

This was a heartwarming lovely book about Sophie who was visiting her mom in the Congo at her mom's bonobo sanctuary. The visit went amiss when it was raided by combatants and Sophie and a young bonobo were on an adventure of sometimes difficult and heartwrenching situations to heartwarming ones. I cried and laughed. Would fully recommend to read with your middle schooler as the book teaches life lessons.
