It's for the artist and not so much for the colorist

This book is for the artist who can draw, which I can't. But, you can learn about coloring. I always find when I want to learn something new one book is not enough. And when it comes to art every artist sees it differently. This is a "Encyclopedia of Coloured Pencil Techniques" that's the title. Its a fascinating book on drawing and coloring techniques its not a book on how to color in a coloring book. For the true guy who can draw I believe its a great book, for the colorist who loves to color in coloring books its not the right book for you, its not the right book for me, but I have it so I must learn something from it. A better book would be #1, "Colorist Special Effect's" by Helen Elliston and #2, "Color Workshop" by Rachel Reinert , my favorites.

Beautiful book but not for amateurs

This is a very nice book with gorgeous representations from serious artists with immense talent. It is actually targeted to those fortunate individuals who may desire to branch into or expand their knowledge of colored pencils utilized alone or combined with other familiar media. It is not for those of us who cannot nor will ever be able to draw. For us, staying within the lines in the adult coloring books is challenging enough.

Additionally, the book is written and published in England so some products mentioned required a Google search, but perhaps an experienced artist knows about cartridge paper. Now I do too -- a plus for me. And the GSM of cartridge paper is grams per square meter. How about that. Another positive is the gorgeous artwork printed to illustrate techniques. The pieces are breathtaking in their complexity and photorealism.

Since the adult coloring book fad appears to be waning, there are less "how to" guides on the market. This is not one of those remaining tools for budding colorists. I have ordered "Color Workshop" by Rachel Reinert and "101 Textures ..." by Dennis J. Howard hoping for more assistance for the inexperienced who just now are finding time to tackle that stack of coloring books we received for birthday and holiday gifts along with hundreds of pencils from every manufacturer on the planet.

A Full Listing of Colored Pencil Techniques

The book does a good job of listing techniques used by colored pencil artists. The photos are beautiful, and I especially liked the various examples in the back of the book. The book is exactly what it says --- an encyclopedia ---- it is not designed as a teaching tool or tutorial. If you are looking for something that will teach you, or give you techniques to practice, this is not the book to buy. There are other great books out there to help the beginner. But -- if you are looking for a general overview that lists techniques you are not familiar with, then you will enjoy it.

Good general overview of techniques

This is a new edition of an older work, but the new artwork illustrating some of the techniques explained show how very far colored pencil has come in the last fifteen years. Even though I have the first edition, I am keeping this updated version also just to study the style of some of the new artists highlighted in the discussions. (Not all of the illustrations have been updated, but there are many new pieces used in illustrations.)
