Bought this because it was son's school Summer reading. He didn't care for the book at all. As far as the price and delivery they were great.
Supposedly one of Oprah's listed books - my son thinks Oprah doesn't know what she's talking about!

Jewel

Brilliant read told from the eyes and voice of a girl who has seen and experienced too much for her young age. No punctuation, just the poetic ramblings of one who loses her mother to suicide, experiences neglect and abuse from her father, and then is shifted from one uncaring family member to another. While many seemed to get lost from the books switching from past to present, I didn't find that to be an issue at all. My opinion, Ellen Foster is a jewel.

Love.

Quick read. Loved the protagonist so much that I almost cried when the book was over. Felt like I'd lost a friend.

Mama

This is a depressing book and I wouldn't recommend it. Someone suggested it for our bookclub and after reading the first few pages it was decided to read another book..

Southern Fiction + Coming-of-Age = Overall Great Read

I read this book 25+ years ago and remember loving it. I just re-read it now and didn't love it quite as much, only because I found the shifts in time to be a bit choppy. Love spunky Ellen and her sad journey to a safe and happy home with the Foster family : )
