Probably a good book but audio reader was horrid.

Review for AUDIO version.
This book may have been a good read but the audio version is horrid. The reader attempts to do accents, dialects, etc and just doesn't have the chops for it. When she was not being cutesy she would just drone on. It was almost unlistenable. I think I'm getting the book at the library. Hint to reader - you're not on stage - just read.

My Favourite Book of 2017!

The strange, socially challenged girl called Eleanor Oliphant, with her nerdy, overly formal speech and odd ways grew into a loveable swan and so did her friend, Raymond. I had doubts about reading (or listening to, in this case) a book with such a dull, unprepossessing cover, and how interesting can a girl by the name of Eleanor Oliphant be?
Very interesting, it turned out. I seldom reread books, but found this one difficult to part with. I listened to the last thirty pages three times to prolong the finish, afraid of missing even the slightest nuance and detail. I shed a few tears, laughed a little and admired the skill of the author for a well-constructed plot and pacing and originality of thought. This was, without a shred of doubt, my favourite book of 2017.

I don't think you can truly understand this book until you have almost finished it for many of the keys to Eleanor Oliphant are revealed crumb by crumb and the story progresses. Rather than the story of a person changing, it is more the story of an entity actually emerging into personhood. The world may see Eleanor and judge her as strange or even laughable but they will not know the terrible circumstances that formed her and continue to shadow and torment her. It is only the love and support of a good friend and the skill of a trusted therapist that bring this poor shell of a being into a thawing and awakening living version of herself. You can't help but root for her and wonder what she will become now that she actually has a life. Hoping there will be a sequel.

A protagonist to root for!

Oh my what a wonderful audio book. Set in Scotland, Eleanor Elephant is a 30 year old single woman whose life is rather unexciting and routine. She's been in the same job for 10 years but, her coworkers snicker behind her back about the way she dresses and her general awkwardness. Fortunately, she does have Raymond, the one coworker who she has bonded with, when together they come to the rescue of an elderly man in distress.

Eleanor is a wonderful, sympathetic character and, through a series of snippets we begin to see that something terrible has happened to her during her childhood involving her horrible mother. This is one of those stories where you'll root for the protagonist and be delighted to find that, "Eleanor Elephant, really is completely fine."

Be sure to try this one.
