Read this book and open doors to lifelong health.” — David Perlmutter, MD, author, #1 New York Times Bestseller, Grain Brain From the Back Cover In recent decades, modern “improvements” to our lifestyle and food supply have come with a cost: our health. From pesticides in our soil to the refrigeration and pasteurization of our food to an overreliance on antibiotics and a preoccupation with sanitizing everything in sight, our desire to be clean is actually putting us at risk for a host of chronic illnesses. That’s because as we’ve shifted our focus to living a germ-free life, our bodies—specifically, our digestive systems—have taken a hit. Starved of actual nutrition, fed toxic levels of processed foods, and overtaxed by chemicals, stress, and excessive antimicrobial use, we’ve developed microscopic tears in our intestinal walls, leading to the widespread inflammation and weakened immunity that characterize a condition known as “leaky gut syndrome.” In Eat Dirt , functional medicine practitioner Dr. Josh Axe explains the hidden causes and widespread effects of leaky gut syndrome, a condition that is thought to be ground zero for many of the country’s most confounding health crises—including allergies, asthma, food sensitivities, diabetes, digestive diseases, arthritis, thyroid conditions, and even frustratingly difficult-to-treat conditions such as chronic fatigue and autism. Dr. Axe explains that 70 percent of our immune system is located in the gut—when it’s under attack, our health suffers. In leaky gut syndrome, a number of factors—including insufficient exposure to“dirt”—leads to the breakdown of the intestinal wall, allowing food, bacteria, and toxins to seep into the bloodstream. In Eat Dirt, Dr. Axe reveals that the solution, while counterintuitive, is almost effortless: we just need to welcome a little more “dirt” back into our lives. From ditching hand sanitizers, using essential oils for personal products, reducing antibiotic use, and consuming local honey to spending more time outside, eating seasonally, managing stress, and incorporating probiotic-rich foods into our diets, Dr. Axe provides specific guidance to help everyone get a little “dirty.” Advance Praise for Eat Dirt “Our understanding of what really threatens human health is undergoing a revolution, and Eat Dirt magnificently describes this paradigm shift. Dr. Axe’s compassionate guidance, centered on reestablishing healthy gut bacteria, is in line with our most respected and forward-thinking medical research. Read this book and open the door to lifelong health.”—David Perlmutter, MD, author of the #1 New York Times Bestseller Grain Brain “ Eat Dirt is a proven way to address the root cause of all disease. The first step to healing yourself is healing your gut. Using the science of ‘microexposures,’ Dr. Axe gives us a simple-to-follow guide on the five steps to repair a damaged gut and overcome a range of issues, from autoimmune disease to chronic inflammation. If you’re ready to learn some cutting-edge concepts and take back your health, this book is for you.”—Mark Hyman, MD, bestselling author of The Blood Sugar Solution “If you’re struggling with a chronic illness like digestive problems, autoimmune disease, or adrenal and thyroid conditions, this book can change your life. Dr. Axe lays out an easy-to-follow plan for addressing the root cause of disease where it starts—in the gut. His natural prescriptions using plant-based medicine, a gut-friendly diet, and exposing yourself to good microbes to build your microbiome are cutting-edge techniques that can help you experience a health breakthrough.”—Sara Gottfried, MD, bestselling author of The Hormone Reset Diet and The Hormone Cure “There is a beautiful course correction afoot—scientific research is reminding us of our inner and outer ecology and our inextricable union with the natural world. In Eat Dirt , Dr. Axe deconstructs the myth behind our war against germs, sheds light on why and how we are sick, and honors the ancient wisdom of healing that starts with the gut.”—Kelly Brogan, MD, ABIHM, author of A Mind of Your Own “Years of oversanitation have left us vulnerable to the modern world’s most dangerous infections. In this practical guide, Dr. Axe helps us see the direct links between our nation’s obsession with cleanliness and the epidemics of leaky gut and autoimmune conditions. Dr. Axe combines cutting-edge science and the ancient practice of natural immunization into a plan that reduces inflammation and chronic pain, promotes weight loss, and increases energy and vitality. Empowered from MOM to SUPERMOM

Finally, a book that puts together science, sense, and steps. By that, I mean I understood what they were saying, understood where the info came from, and could put it into action! As I went deeper and deeper into the book I saw ailments in my friends, my family, myself!- that could be helped with simple lifestyle changes. What it's like to go from accepting a chronic condition to believing you can be freed from it is indescribable. I have followed Dr Axe for years on social media and already reaped so many benefits from him, I trust his advice and perspective. But this takes things to a whole new level. I feel empowered! I made a chart for my 4 kids, much like their chore charts, that include daily food tasks I read in this book that will benefit their health. For example, a kefir smoothie for breakfast, cut up vegetables of their choice in their lunch, a cup of bone broth a day, a Tbs or raw honey....more of those kinds of things. I will make sure all these things are available and have an incentive program in place, but I have to tell you, the thought that I could be shaping their guts, their health and even their moods is so much more important to me that a similar system we use to get the housework done. This has really shifted priorities for me and now, I am putting my efforts into our microbiomes! It's not enough to simply feed my family, I need to heal and nourish them! Thanks Dr Axe for giving me tools to make real change which is what a Mother is ultimately after. I can't say thank you enough!

Total trash. That it has a 4+ star rating shows how pernicious and effective misinformation can be.

I'm someone who's been following the microbiome research daily for a few years now. I catalog what I see in a wiki for others to access. I read this book as part of an investigation into what I saw as dangerous misinformation being spread that seemed to stem from a misinterpretation of the literature.

-

The book starts off with example of his mom's breast cancer & other related health problems being reversed with some standard changes such as removing processed foods, and taking a few supplements. Later on in the book he clarifies that he thinks one of the main things was the "Budwig diet" - a daily drink consisting of "goat's milk kefir (raw and organic), sprouted flax mevvval (meal?), flaxseed oil, stevia to taste".

Attributing only to leaky gut, tons of things that are due to the wide variety of forms of gut dysbiosis. And the solution is to "eat dirt".

Same as with all the others promoting this nonsense, he's misattributing damage done from antibiotics and poor diet to lack of environmental microbes, IE: dirt. Based on the assumption we're born sterile and develop our gut microbiome solely from the environment/dirt.

Most of the recommendations are just general good food/supplements and being outdoors, but the eat dirt stuff is a dangerous misinterpretation of the literature, and jumping to conclusions based on incomplete data.

Gives little to no backing/evidence for his "eat dirt" recommendation. Total junk. It's not even "junk science" as there is no science. It's mostly anecdotes with no scientific studies comparing the results of one behavior vs another, and measuring all health outcomes in both groups.

I wasn't going in to this with high expectations based on what I've seen from his website previously, but this guy makes me non stop facepalm. IMO he's worse than any of the criticisms I've seen directed towards Dr Oz and Mercola.

There are so many conflicting/contradictory statements in this book that I have to wonder at what point in his life did he lose the ability to make logical connections between multiple things. Was it due to problematic microbes he picked up from his dirt eating, or was it something earlier in his development that was the cause. Perhaps he simply inherited dysbiosis from his parents - probably the most common case.

Much of the book is just promoting generally healthy diet. Also promotes the use of essential oils for a variety of things.

To add some perspective on the oils he promotes, one of them - Oil of Oregano, is a broad spectrum antimicrobial (which is completely contradictory to his warnings about antibiotics, and his overall recommendation to eat dirt) that in my experience was more damaging than many prescription antibiotics. AND it gave me no benefits when at least the prescription antibiotics did (along with their harms).

Look up "appeal to nature fallacy". That's what he's doing.

Common misinformation about probiotics - recommends to get multi-strain & high CFU count. And then later on in the book says to look for specific strains/brands that are effective for your specific condition. It's like he's just regurgitating every bit of information out there, regardless of accurate/inaccurate/contradictory.

"All synthetic drugs cause leaky gut in some way" - my imodium strongly disagrees.

"Spikenard, an essential oil widely referenced throughout the Bible, can reduce stress, calm inflamed skin, stimulate the immune system, lower cortisol, and increase spiritual awareness." - example quote

Another perfect example of the major problems in our medical/education systems. This guy is a medical doctor who is extremely uninformed/misinformed and spreading dangerous, non-evidence-based advice. He's got one of the most popular health websites on the net.

Hype for his products.

Disappointing. A lot of hype to scare you into buying his program and products than there is real information. This was confirmed when I saw his pushy infomercial on TV. Expensive programs and products, each level leading to the next. Don’t fall for it, read more about eating balanced diets along with other factors such as getting out more into nature, e.g. “The Dirt Cure” by Maya Shetreat-Klein. Although her book is geared towards kids diets, adults can do the same thing.

I told my kids to NOT eat dirt

I'm sure they did it anyway, but now I would say making mud pies is a good thing! I learned that and so much more from Eat Dirt, Dr. Josh Axe's newest book. He says "all disease begins in the gut." With that in mind I dug into his book to figure out what I needed to do to help my family, friends, others and me!

I've been diagnosed with "leaky gut" by two different doctors, but the healing plan was sketchy to non-existent at best. I fell through the cracks. I've been following Dr. Josh Axe for over a year now and have compared his guidance to other nutritionists and natural-paths along the way. It doesn't contradict, yet his presentation is so "user friendly" I get it! [[ASIN:0062433644 Eat Dirt: Why Leaky Gut May Be the Root Cause of Your Health Problems and 5 Surprising Steps to Cure It]]

"You are what you eat" was the focus of one my college speeches. I've believed that to be true for years, but Dr. Axe disagrees. He says, "you are not what you eat, but what you digest." That makes sense to me now. He says that you can take good supplements and eat healthy food, but if your gut is leaking undigested food particles into the bloodstream, it is all eliminated before it can nourish your body. So, what's the answer? In Eat Dirt, Dr. Axe gives 5 types of leaky gut:
1. Candida Gut
2. Stressed Gut
3. Immune Gut
4. Gastric Gut
5. Toxic Gut

...by answering a few questions you can identify yours, if you have leaky gut, and begin the specific plan to heal your gut! Check out the leaky gut lab tests and Dr. Axe's online quiz on his website for more information.

So where does the "dirt" come in? The scientific explanation is detailed, but losing our simpler way of life has ultimately become the culprit in destroying the good stuff that we now kill with all of our sanitizers and pills. Since we've successfully killed it we are faced with getting it back into our compromised bodies. I don't plan on literally eating dirt, and neither does the author, but he gives the reader so many common sense choices to get those microbes and good stuff back.

With autoimmune diseases cropping up in epidemic proportions, it has become personally a great concern to me enough to search for some answers. This presentation by Dr. Axe specifically addresses and offers scientific and practical answers to the causes and successful treatment of autoimmune.

My book is already highlighted in yellow (my granddaughter who has an unnamed auto immune disease, highlighted in pink), underlined and tabbed for the recipes and information I need. It's a must read and potentially a life changer!

I have always suspected that leaky gut was behind some of the tummy issues I face on a regular basis; however, I never had a clear idea of what it was, exactly, or how to fix it. Dr. Axe's book "Eat Dirt" makes the condition so easy to understand and gives the reader an extremely clear path moving forward to fix your gut health. I haven't even finished the book and already I'm feeling better just following his basic advice. This book has already had a huge impact on my health and the health of my husband and 3 kids. Thank you Dr. Axe!

Eat Dirt - For Your Own Good

OK, let me get this right off first. Dr. Josh Axe, the author of Eat Dirt, is NOT really telling you to go out and eat dirt literally. So don't look at the title and think he's off his chart. In reality, Eat Dirt is a very thorough and informative book on why your gastrointestinal, aka "gut" issues have caused health problems, many auto-immune diseases that may not even have anything to do with your gut, seemingly. Eat Dirt also provides conducive approaches to help improve your gut issues, in turn boosting your immunity and energy level, and subsequently improving your health.

Eat Dirt starts off with the what and why first, and then jump into the how. He includes a "leaky gut quiz", more like a questionnaire to help you figure out how you fare in that area, in the very first chapter. Then it goes into the factors on why you're suffering from a leaky gut, what factors contribute to gut health and finally how to heal your specific gut type. His explanations are easy and constructive, with charts and graphs that are just as that. From a chart on "Gluten hiding in plain sight" to medications that deplete certain nutrients from your body, Dr. Axe doesn't just share a hypothesis or theories, he's providing a nutritional wealth of information. It is certain to have a healthy effect on you, back by scientific researches, patient experiences and additional medical professional resources. Personally, I love the last chapter of sample recipes for a specific gut type.

There's a lot to absorb in this book, and I can say I'm quite engross in it. This is a book I believe can be a significant resource in turning your health around. And I'm starting to incorporate some of his advice into my daily life, starting with some recipes and whole fresh produce.

Best post chemo advice ever!!!!!

After multiple rounds of high dose chemo, my immune system was in shambles. My cancer was gone, but the rest of me wasn't in much better shape. I suffered from several autoimmune diseases. Several doctors have me prescriptions that helped the symptoms, but only one pointed me to the underlying cause- inflammation. Great book.
