A "Must Have" for Every Gardener

Pamela Crawford's books have been a blessing to me as a novice gardener and this new book on combining flowers with vegetables in containers is "right up my alley". The beautiful photographs and simple to understand instructions are exactly what I need to create practical and beautiful containers. I especially appreciate her honest approach to her mistakes, and the pictures of the "bloopers" make a point while being funny at the same time. This book is at the top of my list for hostess gifts and my daughters birthday presents this year. You will enjoy it!

no value

this book actually has a negative value. it shows you how to plant poisonous flowers with your vegetables! you are warned that certain plants are poisonous, but do you really want your grandchild picking tomatoes from a plant growing next to lantana? this is basically a book on using vegetables as ornamentals with a few vegetables as a bonus byproduct. if you want a book on growing vegetables in containers purchase Bountiful Container by McGee and Stuckey.

Veggie Flower combos are beautiful and easy

This new book from Pamela Crawford came as a very pleasant surprise, as I had just planted my first vegetable garden here in south Florida. I have limited space and was wondering about the use of containers. I had been successful with tomatoes in containers but they weren't the best visual compliment to my patio. The wonderful combinations in this book along with the "Bloopers" have inspired me to replicate several of her blue ribbon combos. I found taking the book with me to my garden center is extremely helpful as she suggests. And I am finding the index very easy to use as questions come up. A "must have" for novices as well as expert gardeners!

It Works!

Pamela Crawford writes Garden books that are not only beautiful, clearly written, and a joy to read, but they are developed in the absolute best teaching organization of any book I have used as a public school teacher, homeschool curriculum developer and wife/mom. I am a novice gardener, but Pamela's straightforward directions and explanations have made our gardens thrive for the last year. This new book is even more exciting because in a small urban yard such as ours, she is showing us creative ways to not only increase the vegetables we can grow, but how to make them aesthetically pleasing as yard ornaments as well! I had the privilege of attending one of Pamela's live events in Huntsville last year and can.not.wait to see her again! I highly recommend this book for personal use as well as family projects!

Good Pictures

I want to grow some vegetables in containers in a condo with a sunny deck and a shady walkout patio and this is a helpful book for ideas on how to combine so it looks great while you are growing. I did notice many of the combo containers use non-edible veggies like decorative kale and cabbage which is not what I was looking for. There are plenty of good ideas too. I am now starting my containers and have beans, peppers, tomato plants, eggplants, and many choices to combine with flowers. I am not sure how they will look after the harvest though.

After realizing that my soil has been fighting me with my vegetables, I decided to grow them in containers. This book helped with simple pictures and helpful hints. The failures and how she corrected them helped as well. Definitely a must have for your gardening book collection.

Not for someone serious about a funtional vegetable garden

I would not recommend for someone looking to start a container garden for eating. If you want a "pretty" garden that happens to have vegetables, this is a way to get ideas. I am looking to grow food to eat, I am not judging it on its attractiveness. I dont think she has much previous knowledge on vegetables. She said she could not find any starter beans plants, so she used seeds. According to the Stucky and McGee container book, a much, more useful read, beans are almost impossible to transplant, so you havr to start them where they will grow to maturity. There just wasnt as much practical knowledge as I wanted. It read like it was all a big experiment for her.

Very informative, but needs editing!

So far this book has been informative and helpful. The best part was detailed growing information she gives for her top rated plantes. I would have liked more emphasis on gardens which actually lack space, however, as it is obvious that the author is not lacking in space. Another downfall is the lack of editing in the book. I grew frustrated with all the typos and other errors I found, and sometimes the information was overly repetative. Nonetheless, it is a great book to get an introduction to the topic.

Inspirational and Easy to follow

I bought this book and brought it on a trip with a friend. The friend liked it so much she begged me to keep it. I just came from her home and she has created 3 different baskets of flowers and vegetables, just from reading this book. I have since reordered the book so that I try my hand at easy container gardening. Every gardener that sees this book, loves it and wants one for themselves! Finally a book for container gardening that even a novice can understand and follow.

nice reference

I saw the author on a PBS program and was attracted to her expertise on container gardening. It is very picture heavy, but also has text explaining the best varieties she found for this kind of gardening. I plan to refer to it for some time.
