Dissapointed to say the least.

I've been reading adult literature for 50+ years. This book is written so poorly it's hard to put into words. The storyline, characters and dialogue are about as sophmoric anyone could imagine. Without total detail (you may buy to read anyway) the alien creatures are about as ridiculous as they can be. Goofy main characters and their interaction dialogues are horrible.
I read around 200+ pages hoping it would settle into a decent novel. I couldn't finish and tossed it in the trash. Worthless read!
I'm a prolific reader of sci fi novels AC Clark, ER Burroughs, Frank Herbert, S King to name just a few. This book is not worth the paper it's written on.
Abolutely the worst review I have ever made.

Painfully Brutally Repetitive Rip Off

It’s hard to describe the flaws with this book without delivering a boat load of spoilers, but….

This book is painfully, brutally derivative. Almost as though the author caught parts of Starship Troopers and Full Metal Jacket on Netflix, and decided to dumb both down with a heavy dose of vapid anime tropes. If you’ve read SciFi before or seen one of the many “boot camp” war movies you’re going to recognize the intellectual property right away.

The text is shallow and repetitive. Character development is non-existent. The narrative is sloppy and lazy with many, many logic flaws that really don’t serve even to move the story forward. Characters are one dimensional and completely, utterly un-compelling. It has the feel of a summer project by a talented high school student.

I'm baffled by the large number of hyper positive reviews. This should be clearly classified as young adult fiction - appropriate for 14-16 year olds. As a work for adults it's in desperate need of a good editor, a couple of original ideas, and the associated extensive re-write.

Moody, trite, generally wreched.

Moody, trite, not worth my time. There is nothing that recommends this book or the next in the series. A poor redo of Starship Troopers, without a meaningful plot, believable characters or any science whatsoever. Please tell the author that there is only one captain on a ship, that soldiers who must frequently must wear gas masks can not have full face beards, that deep space spacecraft that crash on a planet have no survivors aboard and the spacecraft will never fly again by itself. The author does not know the military. The author has no grasp of science or engineering. Horrible book, a waste of money & time. I am not even giving this away, it goes in the trash can.

Don't waste your time

This book was a complete waste of time. The authors understanding of technology is pathetic. I have no idea who rated this thing highly, they must have very low expectations. I don't. There are a ton of good books out there. Don't waste your time.

Pathetic attempt at ripping off Starship Troopers

Pathetic attempt at ripping off Starship Troopers. The whole scenario lacks any kind of logic. Earth and some aliens decide that instead of swiftly wiping each other out with nukes, or asteroid strikes, they'll just have a conventional war of attrition. Earth has lost more than half of its population, and what's the strategy according to the author? Let's force all girls in their prime child bearing age to play soldiers for five years instead of raising the next generation. /facepalm This book is just a pile of poz propaganda by some beta who has no idea about the military, strategy, or basic logic.

All the five star reviews must be fakes.

Was hoping for an original.

But got a pale copy of Starship Troopers. I like Daniel, and have read all but a couple of his books, but I'm disappointed in this one. The names, situations, and premise are all way too close to Starship Troopers.

Boot Camp Is For Everyone

This book was not at all what I thought it would be. The premise of the plucky humans rising from certain defeat to fight off a superior enemy is a common sci-fi theme and one of my favorite. But the action is quite scarce and limited to a brief introductory moment and a frantic near last chapter ending. The characters are immature and cartoonish, and a bit cliched. The main character is immature and a bit of a wimp, not at all the rugged soldier type one might expect. There is way too much sentimentality and self-analyzing happening here. The vast majority of the book is a hybrid of the first half of the movie "Full Metal Jacket" and the boot camp scenes from "Stormship Troopers". Nearly the entire book is about boot camp, the struggles, training, failures and triumphs of such an experience. And through it all, the wimpy main character just wants to go home and be a librarian. This is with the Earth all but devastated by a superior intelligent space alien swarm of 10 foot tall centipede style creatures. There is little to endear us to the characters, some of whom don't make it to the end of the book. The technology is never really explained and seems to rely on old fashioned technology existing in today's world, yet humans have somehow magically been able to travel to the stars and the enemy's planet for retaliatory missions. There is an extensive use of "rockets" for transportation, but how they are interstellar capable is a mystery. I will likely not rush into the second book unless there is some pronounced maturing of the characters and a bit more sophistication of the weaponry and technology.

I don't care about basic training

The writer spends nearly the entire book talking about Marco's (main character) basic training and his relationship with three women. I thought it was very well written. I thought the world background and descriptions were superb. He's a damn fine writer, no question about that. Yet, I found the story topic to be a little boring. He spends the entire book on a ten week military training course. I've already been there in other books and I'm bored of it. It really dragged in the middle and I had to force myself to the end, I can say there was pay off so I was happy about that. Not a bad series. I'll give the second one a chance.
