Description

‘DYING LIGHT is a wonderfully gripping and grim second outing for Logan McRae … Fierce, unflinching and shot through with the blackest of humour; this is crime fiction of the highest order’ Mark Billingham Praise for Stuart MacBride: ‘Ferocious and funny, this is Tartan Noir at its best’ Val McDermid ‘MacBride is a damned fine writer – no one does dark and gritty like him’ Peter James ‘A terrific writer … Brilliant … bodies abound, blood flows freely and McRae is a delight’ The Times ‘Those who like their crime thrillers diamond hard need look no further than Stuart MacBride … He has few equals in this area’ Independent From the Inside Flap "MacRae is an interesting and subtle detective, and his investigation is both inventive and imaginative."---"Dallas"" Morning News" Detective Sergeant Logan MacRae has been bumped to D.I. Roberta Steel's "Screw-up Squad" after a raid he led on a warehouse rumored to be full of stolen property ended with no arrests and one officer critically injured. The backstabbing, limelight-stealing, laziest D.I. on Aberdeen's police force, Steel's team is made up of the "no-hopers," the most worthless or inexperienced members of the homicide department, and Logan will do anything to prove he doesn't belong there. Including working overtime on two baffling cases: the murder by arson of six people, and the beating to death of a prostitute down by the docks, not a high priority compared to the fire. At least not until another prostitute ends up dead. Although both cases seem simple on the surface---turns out the fire's victims are part of a drug dealer's inner circle, and what fate is to be expected for working girls in Aberdeen's red-light district? --- in Stuart MacBride's hands, what's going on in this rainy Scottish city is bound to be much more complicated than it appears. A detailed authenticity combines with a dark Scottish sense of humor and a lively cast of characters in MacBride's unputdownable second novel, confirming his status as a rising star of crime fiction. "With this follow-up to "COLD GRANITE," "deemed an "impressive debut" by Publishers Weekly, "Stuart MacBride proves himself to be a rising star of crime fiction--and this time, the action is more explosive than ever " A FALL FROM GRACE On the coast of Scotland, in the "Granite City" of Aberdeen, Detective Sergeant Logan MacRae is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Bumped to the homicide department's "Screw-up Squad" after a sting operation gone wrong, Logan will do anything to prove that he doesn't belong there even if it means working overtime on two baffling cases: a fatal act of arson in a squatter's apartment and the murder of a prostitute in the city's notorious red-light district. A DEADLY UPRISING But when it rains in Aberdeen, it pours--and soon Logan is up to his neck in danger. Turns out the two cases might have something dangerously in common. Now, enlisting the help of his former D.I., his forensic-pathologist ex-girlfriend, and his fellow "no-hopers" on the squad, Logan is charged not only with solving a series of vicious crimes but saving his own life--and reputation--in the process. "Well-written savage, darkly comic." --"Publishers Weekly" "Inventive and imaginative." --"Dallas"" Morning News" www.stuartmacbride.comwww.minotaurbooks.com Stuart MacBride is the Sunday Times No. 1 bestselling author of the Logan McRae and Ash Henderson novels. "Darkness cannot drown out darkness, only light can. Hate cannot drown out hate, only love can." M.L. King, Jr.

In Aberdeen, Scotland, when one of the police officers working under Det. Sgt. Logan MacRae is wounded in a botched raid, MacRae is assigned to the 'Screw-Up Squad' as punishment. He's had success in past cases and has been praised by the media but one chief inspector has taken a dislike to him and will do whatever he can to ruin MacRae's career.

MacRae is assigned to work under Det. Inspector Steele, a wise cracking, heavy smoking woman who must have some information about the chief inspector because she never takes any criticism from him. Now Steele and Logan work together and their top priority is apprehending the person who is murdering and dismembering prostitutes.

There is another supervisor who Logan is helping in hope of being reassigned. The main case that this supervisor is working on involves a series of arson fires and fatalities.

As a character, Logan has compassion for the prostitutes and tries to help them. In particular, he's moved by the situation of a young Lithuanian girl named Kylie.

The novel succeeds with excellent dialogue, and a humorous banter that is necessary for police authorities to relieve the horror of what they have to deal with, burned bodies and dismembered corpses.

I enjoyed reading about MacRee. He's a good protagonist who isn't perfect. He's somewhat rambunctious who at times acts without realizing the implications of his actions. Yet, he's respected by the officers who work under his command and he's a successful criminal investigator-a regular cop who hates the politics that accompany his job.

An entertaining read.

Did not connect it to the first book

I totally loved the first book in the series. In this story. DS McCrae has been demoted to the screw up squad. The group of people in the squad are definitely screw-ups. He kind of blended in until the end of the story. They are trying to find out who is murdering prostitutes - only it doesn't remain to only prostitutes. In addition, someone is setting apartments on fire after screwing shut the doors so people can't escape. McCrae is under the wing of the woman in charge and she is indefatigable. She is determined to make good, but she's a mess and just makes things worse. In the end, McCrae comes through and solves the case. Really a 3.5 for the story. I'll read the next.

Not up to par

I have enjoyed books in this series but this one falls a little short of the mark. The pace is somewhat slowed by repeatedly dwelling on the annoying idiosyncracies of a couple characters and some bumbling around. The reader is also put off by the inanity. For instance, our protagonist, already in hot water, organizes an unauthorized, off-duty stakeout of some dangerous suspects. He initiates a confrontation in which the armed antagonists shoot one of his unarmed crew before escaping. He thinks he knows where they went and takes a sidekick to that house. Signs indicate that he guessed correctly but he inexplicably walks right into another faceoff with the armed criminals. Really? There is enough good stuff in the book to make it passable, but just barely.

A tough and exciting read !

A dark, exciting police thriller set in Aberdeen.Logan McRae is a fascinating main character - flawed, tenacious and constantly struggling in a story both brutal and at times amusing. The other characters also make this read unputdownable !

Enjoyed the tightness of the story line. The development of the players is starting to come to life.
