Description

"A stunning novel that encompasses both suffering and hope.... The best work yet from one of science fiction's best writers."-- "The Denver Post "Splendid work -- brutal, gripping and genuinely harrowing, the product of diligent research, fine writing and well-honed instincts, that should appeal far beyond the normal science-fiction constituency."-- "Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "The world of 1348 burns in the mind's eye, and every character alive that year is a fully recognized being.... It becomes possible to feel...that Connie Willis did, in fact, over the five years Doomsday Book took her to write, open a window to another world, and that she saw something there."-- "The Washington Post Book World For Kivrin, preparing an on-site study of one of the deadliest eras in humanity's history was as simple as receiving inoculations against the diseases of the fourteenth century and inventing an alibi for a woman traveling alone. For her instructors in the twenty-first century, it meant painstaking calculations and careful monitoring of the rendezvous location where Kivrin would be received. But a crisis strangely linking past and future strands Kivrin in a bygone age as her fellows try desperately to rescue her. In a time of superstition and fear, Kivrin -- barely of age herself -- finds she has become an unlikely angel of hope during one of history's darkest hours. Five years in the writing by one of science fiction's most honored authors, Doomsday Book is a storytelling triumph. Connie Willis draws upon her understanding of the universalities of human nature to explore the ageless issues of evil, suffering and the indomitable will of the human spirit.

Excellent reading

I loved this book when I first read it and lost my original. The story is told so well that you can almost believe yourself in the past and feeling the young woman's anxiety as she experiences the problems of being in the middle of the Black Death in England in 1349.

Connie Willis, Doomsday Book

You told me I had ordered this in November, 2012. Not this edition, I didn't. What I ordered before was a full-sized hardback book. This one amounts to a bad paperback on extremely cheap paper with boards added on the outside. Print barely readable. I can't imagine it being in a public library. As disappointed as I am, it's hardly worth my trouble to return it - although I'm tempted.

The Plague and other annoyances

Even if you're not a lover of medieval history as I am, this rip-roaring story will delight you. What happens when university students must go back into time to research a particular time or place? Officially, it's to enrich our knowledge of history and give precision and accuracy to what we believe about a time long ago. But . . . what if the fellow who runs the time machine has the flu and . . . well -- read it. I've read it twice so far and lent it out several times, and finally bought this because my original paperback is all worn out and falling apart. That's how good it is!

Like the time travel machinery described in the book

Fast and nervously-paced, a thriller encased in history: read this and get taken back in time to the English countryside in the mid-fourteenth century when the contemporaries are stunned and slaughtered by the Plague. And, read this and get taken into the future when time travel allows historians to visit the past. Finally, read this and ponder the unintended consequences of science in our age and the lack of science in the past. Willis is the diva of science fiction writing. Like the time travel machinery described in the book, Willis' writing takes you there.

Totally engaging.

The best book I've read in ages (and I'm not a scifi/fantasy fan)! The only flaw is that the author didn't anticipate modern telecommunications beyond video phone calls, but, in 1992 when this was published, how could she? And even with smartphones, people might have been just as unreachable as portrayed in the book, because of dead batteries or no cellphone towers.
How prescient though, that even in the midst of an epidemic in "modern" Oxford, some of the characters were focused on department politics, grabbing power, bell ringing and other things unrelated to mitigating the epidemic--just the way they were when 2020 and 2021 came around. And that then, as now, there were honorable and inspiring people everywhere. Mr. Dunworthy sticking to his guns and managing the epidemic and carrying out his responsibilities to his students. Colin, who turned out to have more depth of character than you'd expect from a candy gobbling 12 year old. Father Roche and his saintly devotion to all in need. Kirvin and her kindness. Wonderful characters. Thoroughly researched. Totally engaging.

This is my favorite book!

I read this book about 20 years ago. I decided to read it again. I had to order it, since I gave my copy away. While I hate the mass market paperback and the “library “ version hardback covers, the book itself is fantastic. And: I had forgotten about the pandemic aspect, which closely correlated with our own current situation. I can not recommend this book highly enough!

Excellent read. You are taken along on a journey as the novel develops.

Well written and devolved by the author. The book is very intense in its story line. Nothing is left for the reader to guess what happens in the end it is all there. Well presented and the story line is complete all characters are well presented and you feel as if you know them or someone just like them. Worth the time and money to add this book to any science fiction/just good story collections. It is one of the few books that I have read twice and gained more in the second reading. You are almost brought to tears along feeling so much a part of the main character.

Connie Willis at her finest!

Connie Willis is just a fabulous author. I love just about everything she has written. With the exception of What Happened to the Dog, that is, her tales of awesome. This novel came as a complete surprise. I had more info about Medieval times than I did from reading loads of Historical Fiction and History. I agree with the prior reviewer; this is not for everyone. If you have to have rosy endings don't read Willis. But if you are adventurous go ahead. I think Doomsday and Passages are her very best novels. Enjoy.
