What Do These Characters Look Like?

I enjoy a well-written British procedural with a good, strong main character in the vein of Peter Robinson’s DCI Alan Banks. This isn’t as well-written, and there is something missing for me = any type of description of the main detective. Come on! I want to picture the guy as he runs his hands over his face or through his hair, making it stand on end. What color hair? How tall is he? Is he overweight? Is he slightly handsome? What? I know. I guess I should just make up my own characteristics but that’s not my job, it’s the author’s job. So I’ll finish this one but probably won’t read another. Waiting for more Robinson’s Banks, or Ian Bank’s Rebus; and to learn how to describe a character, just read Louise Penny’s descriptions of all of her characters, including Chief Inspector Armand Gamache (I would know him if I met him on the street).

A Good Read

A new author for me. I really enjoyed this meaty, layered, well written mystery and I liked the detective and the atmospheric setting. Will not hesitate to read another book in this series.

Bleak and depressing

I have read many mysteries where a flawed detective solves an intricate case or cases. This mystery was different since it was so bleak and depressing. Too many people were killed. Even the secretary has terminal cancer which adds northing to the story line. Also the main villain does not appear until the end of the book and his motive is never clear. Since that is the case the story cannot really be described as a who done it. I would have liked a more atmospheric novel. However, it was mainly a one character mystery. When I finished reading the book I was sorry I had purchased it. If you have purchased the book, toss it. It is not worthwhile reading.

Enjoyable and well written.

I thought this novel was well written and enjoyable. It was not cheap or hasty. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to a friend. Also, being an American, I enjoyed the phrasing and terminology the author used.
That all being said and this is a minor detail to me, his substance abuse issue was unbelievable and underdeveloped. I’m not sure why it was even referenced at all.
