The Phantom Detention Zone

Like its two predecessors, this volume is a small hardcover that with a quick glance looks superficially like a manga-style of book; but on reading resolves itself into a very western-style of children’s book.

It consists of short bursts of comic-book pages - pencilled, with a black & grey wash shading - interspersed with text - or rather, copies of documents/emails written by the young Bruce Wayne to his fellow students involved in the story – Clark Kent, Diana Prince, Ollie Queen, Barry Allen and Vic Stone.

Whatever it is, it is definitely a graphic novel, for it contains graphics, and it is very novel. It is also vastly entertaining. These guys - Fridolfs and Nguyen (writer & artist) - love comics and they love comics’ history; there are references and jokes both visual and verbal throughout.

The plot sees successful schoolchildren invited to an awards ceremony where the trophies are provided by Lexcorp, and which have some hidden secrets, leading to the team eventually being trapped in the Phantom Zone.

This really is tremendous fun - it is graphic, it is novel, it is vastly entertaining (and a complete story, with a proper beginning, middle and ending and everything), and I want more. If you actually ENJOY reading comics, you will enjoy this.
