Description

From Booklist It’s the Fourth of July on Broward’s Rock, the sea island off the coast of South Carolina that is home to Death on Demand, the mystery bookstore run by Annie Darling, and to Confidential Commissions, the problem-solving agency run by her husband, Max. At a dance at the club that holiday night, it seems that Max and Annie are the only happy couple. Most notably, Shell, the younger, second wife of Wesley Hurst, is making things miserable for him, his first wife, her lover, his kids, and her blackmailer. Several days after the dance, Wesley’s daughter comes to Confidential Commissions to ask Max for help in finding Shell, who is missing along with her new green Porsche. Also missing is a waiter at the club. Annie and Max suspect a connection, but, until a body is found, others assume both Shell and the waiter are just away. As always, Annie and Max use conversations and subterfuge to seek out the truth. Fans of this series will enjoy the twists on the monthly store contest and the involvement in the case of Max’s mother, local author Emma Clyde. --Karen Muller Review Praise for Carolyn Hart:“Carolyn Hart’s work is both utterly reliable and utterly unpredictable.” —Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times bestselling author “One of the most popular practitioners of the traditional mystery.” — The Cleveland Plain Dealer “The Annie Darling books are masterpieces of construction and characterization, with a perfect balance between a puzzle mystery that keeps a reader happily turning pages and well-drawn characters that are as full of surprises as the people in our own lives.” — Connecticut Post “Hart’s latest cozy puzzler casts a net that will ensnare a wide audience.” — Kirkus Reviews “Well-developed characters and a complex, fast-moving plot make for a satisfying read.” — Publishers Weekly About the Author An accomplished master of mystery, Carolyn Hart is the author of twenty-two previous Death on Demand Mysteries. Features & Highlights

  • Summer is a hectic time of the year for Annie Darling. Sun and scorching temperatures never fail to bring swarms of tourists to her mystery bookstore, Death on Demand, for the latest beach reads. But Annie still finds time to enjoy herself. The Broward’s Rock Fourth of July dance is just around the corner, and the island is buzzing with excitement—Shell Hurst included... Shell is the kind of woman wives hate—for good reason—and most of them wish she would just disappear. But when she does, and a teenage girl is the only one who seems to notice, Annie can’t help but feel like someone should be looking for her. Last seen walking into the pine trees at the Fourth of July fireworks display, Shell has seemingly vanished without a trace. The residents of Broward’s Rock grow uneasy when a second islander mysteriously disappears. Annie and her husband, Max, know something dangerous is brewing. They soon find themselves following a twisted trail marked by blackmail, betrayal, and adultery, winding from the corridors of the island’s lovely inn to a pier lashed by pelting rain, to a gathering on the terrace of a country club where a trap is set for a calculating killer

Hart Does it Again!

Hurray for another Death on Demand book! Annie and Max Darling are such a fantastic duo. If you love Agatha Christie (like I do) you'll love Hart's Death on Demand series as well. Dead, White, and Blue kept me guessing until the end. I highly recommend this mystery to anyone looking for a great read.

Carolyn Hart's 50th book is her best yet!!

For readers that have been following Annie and Max Darling right from the beginning, with the release of Death in Demand, they will be anxiously awaiting the release of the 23rd book in this series, Dead, White & Blue.

It is summer in Broward's Rock and Annie and Max Darling are looking forward to the Fourth of July dance. However one resident is causing up a stir and everything is due to come to a head at the dance. That person is Shell Hurst, the woman everyone loves to hate. Even her own husband, Wesley Hurst, has reasons to dislike her and wish her dead. When she goes missing after the dance, after having made a spectacle, Max is asked to investigate where she went by Shell's step-daughter, Hayley. However what Annie and Max will uncover is a multiple murder and many people in the town that really wished Shell would disappear and never return.

The Death on Demand series are one of my favorites. They are intelligent mysteries, that are very much reminiscent of Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence. Annie and Max are smart sleuths, that always get their man (or woman!), despite the obstacles in their way. This time there is quite a few people that are determined to stop them from investigating Shell's disappearance, people that would rather she stayed missing!

I love the Darlings and I always enjoy trying to solve the mystery alongside them. I also dearly love Broward's Rock and the Death on Demand bookstore. The secondary characters that appear in each book have endeared themselves to me over time, and I always look forward to taking another adventure with them.

If you haven't picked up this series yet, be sure to begin with Death on Demand. Like a glass of fine wine, these books have only gotten better with age, and I can't wait to see what Carolyn Hart has in store for us next.

Cheers for Dead, White, and Blue

Carolyn Hart's Death on Demand series never disappoints. As always, in Dead, White, and Blue, the setting is wonderfully integrated into the plot. It never becomes easy to spot the villain, so readers get to keep guessing right up to the end. And the relationship between Max and Annie shows the best of what a good marriage should be.

50th Book and Better Than Ever

It's hard to believe that anybody could write 50 books. It's harder still to believe that her 50th book would be one of her most thrilling. However, that's exactly what Carolyn Hart has done with her latest release: Dead, White, and Blue.
Loved the setting in Broward's Rock. I've always loved the south. And, I always love the 4th of July celebrations. But, of course, Carolyn puts a witty spin on all those things in Dead, White and Blue. And, naturally it involves both mystery and murder.
I found it to be an easy and fast read. And, I really don't read much fiction. But, Mrs. Hart keeps you turning the pages faster and faster as you lose your sense of time and place. It was a great weekend escape.
Destined to be a classic. A must read.

By the way, Carolyn has a great website: [...]

Ms. Hart has out-done herself.

The story grabs you from the opening page with a "potential" victim you simply love to hate. The denoument is as unexpect4d as the twists and turns throughout the story. This book is truly worthy of being the milestone of 50th book. Congratulations to Ms. Hart for a story well imagined, marvelously carried out with suspense and entertainment.

Ms. Hart needs to stop cutting and pasting

I read this in 3 hours, and bemoaned each minute. Very glad I had checked it out of the library, rather than buying it.

Ms. Hart wastes a lot of times on description, and not much on questioning each suspect.

The worst part of the book was the denouement. Even Agatha Christie was never that creatively barren.

And please please please get rid of that meddling, airhead mother-in-law, Laurel. Can't she be a murder victim in a future book?

This was the last Carolyn Hart book I'm ever reading. Elaine Viets writes much better mysteries.

I'd rate this with 0 stars, if that existed.

A Great Who Dun It Mystery

Shell Hurst is the type of woman, wives, girlfriends, and very often men grow to hate. She is beautiful but has a mean streak in her that makes you wonder why?

When Shell goes missing after a spectacular last scene at the country club, Annie and Max Darling are asked to find out 'Where is Shell?' by her step-daughter. As time passes by and no one has made a sighting nor found her car, the cry becomes...WTB? Or, Where is the body?

This book centers on Annie and Max but soon the entire team of Death on Demand is actively involved in solving this island crime.

Other bodies show up and finally the police get involved, or do they? I'll let you find out.

This novel was up to the standard of all the previous ones in the series. I adore this series.

Loved It

Max for Mayor! I hope this is where Ms Hart is headed with this series. Just think how much trouble Annie could get into if her husband is mayor. Personally, I want to move to Broward's Rock and visit Death on Demand every day.

Thanks Carolyn. Loved the book.

This is another excellent effort by the Queen of Cozy, Ms. Carolyn Hart. I have been reading the Max and Annie Darling Books for some time now, and I love each and every one of them. This book is another winner. The setting is of course Broward's Rock in South Carolina . The book is set in a steaming hot July on this little island paradise. This is beach reading at its best. Annie and Max are trying to find out what happened to a young woman who disappeared during the fireworks display on July 4. No one seems to think that anything bad has happened to her, but Annie and Max know that she just didn't disappear off the island without a trace. There is no shortage of suspects, as this young woman has not made many friends in Broward's Rock. She has not been above going after any man she fancies and could care less if he's married or not. And Annie and Max are nothing if not entertaining. I love reading about their lives and their friends with each book that comes out. It's like reading about old friends, and that's what cozies are supposed to be about. Can't wait for the next one.
