Features & Highlights

  • Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is forever haunted by the unexplained disappearance of his wife, Sandy, nearly ten years ago. Ever since she went missing, he's been consumed with finding out what happened to her. Finally, he may be moving on. He has fallen in love and is going to marry his girlfriend, Cleo, who is pregnant with their child.
  • But his life is put on hold when, after a wild New Year's Eve ball, a woman is brutally raped as she returns to her hotel room. A week later, another woman is attacked. Both victims' shoes are taken by their attacker. Grace soon realizes that these new cases bear remarkable similarities to an unsolved series of crimes in the city back in 1997. The perpetrator had been dubbed "Shoe Man" and was believed to have raped four women before murdering his fifth victim and vanishing. Could this be a copycat, or has Shoe Man resurfaced?
  • When more women are assaulted, Grace becomes increasingly certain that they are dealing with the same man. By delving back into the past―a time when Sandy was still in his life―he may find the key to unlocking the current mystery. Soon Grace and his team find themselves in a desperate race against the clock to identify and save the life of the new sixth victim, as he struggles with a chapter in his life he thought he had put behind him at last.

Too long but has merit

Two series of violent rapes separated by a decade are too co-incidental for Superintendent Grace to ignore, this coupled with a young woman who he believes has been murdered by the rapist set the scene for this murder mystery that's not too bad, but it needs editing, it's way to long.

It's a bit graphic regarding the raping of the victims, I must be getting old but too much detail adds bugger all to the plot.

James can write and his plot is about 80%, maybe we could have done without a couple of the red herrings as its fairly evident whose the killer is about half way though but like I say the writings good so I wanted to get to the end where there is a surprise so the story doesn't just fade away.

But again too long, the plot can't justify 600 pages.

This series is one I've just found and I'll read more of them.

An enjoyable read from a master storyteller

The sixth instalment in the popular Roy Grace series sees the dogged Detective Superintendent trying to catch a brutal serial rapist whose crimes bring the past crashing terrifyingly back into the present for several people. A New Years eve partygoer is savagely attacked as she returns to her room in a fancy hotel in Brighton. A week later another woman is assaulted. Both victims’ shoes are taken by the offender.

Grace soon realises the attacks echo the unsolved series of ‘Shoe Man’ crimes that struck Brighton back in 1997, where four women were raped and a fifth disappeared, never to be seen again. As the pattern begins to repeat, Grace and his team find themselves in a desperate hunt to find a dangerous man. But perhaps the answer lies in the past, from a time before Grace’s own wife Sandy disappeared without a trace?

James is a master of both police procedure and evoking a good sense of the Brighton setting, bringing authenticity and depth to both while spinning an intriguing tale that will keep readers guessing. At the same time Dead Like You provides a further insight into Grace, with its flashbacks to his earlier life with Sandy. An enjoyable read.

Great read

This is the first book that I've read by Peter James and it will not be the last. It was tightly plotted with great characters. I could not put it down.
