Features & Highlights

  • Stolen sports cars, brilliant casino heists, and the brazen kidnapping of a prince: only shadowy spy for hire Simon Riske can stop the mastermind behind it all.
  • Monte Carlo's lavish casinos have become the target of a sophisticated and brutal team of professional gamblers; a casino dealer has been beaten to death; a German heiress's son has been kidnapped. Who better to connect the crimes and foil a daringly brilliant plot than Simon Riske, freelance industrial spy? Riske -- part Bond, part Reacher -- knows Monte Carlo well: it's where he was once a thrill-seeking thief himself, robbing armored trucks and leading police on dangerous car chases across the Côte d'Azur, until he was double-crossed, served his time, and graduated as an investment genius from the Sorbonne. Now Riske is a man who solves problems, the bigger and "riskier" the better. From the baccarat tables of Europe's finest casinos to the superyachts moored in Monaco's Port Hercule to a secluded chalet deep in the Swiss Alps, Riske will do what he does best: get in over his head, throw himself into danger, and find a way to outthink and outmaneuver villains of every stripe. In one of the most clever, enjoyable, and entertaining series to come along in years, this sequel to
  • The Take
  • gives readers what they want most: a hero we can root for, locales we wish we were in, and a plot that never lets up.

Another thriller gone wrong

This is what happens to thriller writers. They can not sustain the genre. After so many books, they fall into a formula that gets tedious and predictable. When I find a novel that takes place in Europe and is supposed to be a page turner not working on any level, and I find myself racing through the pages hoping for something, anything, to keep me reading and none of it works, I sigh and close the cover and try to warn you, dear Amazon readers, not to waste your time. I’m sure it must have been a lot of fun to research, on location of course, this book and conjure all those rich people and beautiful women, but they are cartoon characters devised to move the plot forward. No amount of fast cars and sexy locales can save this book.

A Great Escape!!!

Simon Riske is the new James Bond. This sleek thriller delivers the goods from first page to last. I've read all of Christopher Reich's novels and CROWN JEWEL is his best. Suspense fiction of the very highest order.

Enjoyed, better than Book 3

I enjoyed this Book 2 of Simon Riske and read it all in 2-3 days. Straddling multiple countries and European culture, and blending the worlds of cons/thieves and the good guys. I enjoyed his new interest Elizabeth, and based on the ending in this book, was surprised she doesn't reappear at all in Book 3 when Simon goes to Thailand to rescue an acquaintance arrested by the Thai government.

An enjoyable-ish sophomore slump for Simon.

3.5/5 - The book opens promisingly enough but it veers downhill in the second-half. Simon remains a charming rogue we all want to root for, and all the ingredients (glitz, cars, glamour, fist-fights) that made the first book a fun read are here. It's just that the story drifts into predictability and the villains this time around are never really a serious threat. However, it is still a fun read and Christopher Reich is one of the best authors working today. His smooth prose and keen eye for human details make his stories real-enough, despite their occasional dalliances with irrationality.

Schemes

The second novel by Christopher Reich to feature protagonist Simon Riske is titled, Crown Jewel. This time out, Riske accepts a job to investigate unusual losses at a casino in Monte Carlo. A cover story for Riske’s arrival at the scene is a car race in which he gets to drive the car of a billionaire client that returned to Riske’s shop at an opportune time. Following a chance meeting with a German heiress, Riske agrees to help solve her problem as well. Thanks to Reich’s great pacing, the schemes twist and turn, with Riske in the middle of everything. Fans of action thrillers are those readers most likely to enjoy this novel.
