Description

From Publishers Weekly Throughout Pinsky's time hosting MTV's popular Loveline show-in which he and cohost Adam Carolla (The Dr. Drew and Adam Book) frankly answered teen questions about sex and drugs-Pinsky also ran the drug addiction rehab clinic at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. In this engaging and well-written memoir, he incorporates a frank description of his work with the "manipulative, secretive, frightened, paranoid and unstable" patients at Las Encinas, a single-story bungalow on 30 acres once used as a Hollywood backdrop (this is where W.C. Fields died and Ozzy Osborne's son recently spent time). Pinsky plays down the Tinseltown connection, preferring to look at his entire range of patients, who represent "every possible facet of society, from the rich to the destitute to the socially prominent to the disconnected." What they share are the typical hot buttons of trauma-"pain, abuse, neglect, abandonment"-and the attempt to ease the pain through drug addiction. Pinsky provides a hard-nosed look at the realities of a detox clinic, from the patients' physical illness and flashbacks to doctors' letdown when a patient quits the program and returns to addiction. Pinsky freely admits that he doesn't know why some people "get it" and stay sober while others can't; at the same time, he openly discusses his own problems ("I turned to rescuing other people the same way my patients turn to drugs and alcohol").Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Dr. Drew Pinsky, famous as the compassionate and sensible advice doctor on the hugely popular radio show Loveline, shines here in his debut solo publishing effort. Pinsky's day job is not quite as glamorous as the Loveline gig: he tends to junkies, prescription drug addicts, and out-of-control alcoholics at a Southern California rehab clinic. Here he details, in an honest, intelligent, and touching way, the superhuman and often futile effort it takes to save these lost souls. Patients at the clinic include strung-out models and celebrities, messed-up Beverly Hills teens, as well as those from the other side of the tracks, all of whose cases encompass addictions to every known type of narcotic or alcohol. Pinsky doesn't spare the reader's feelings and details with a clinical eye the horror of these ravaged lives as well as their frightening process of physical withdrawal. The doctor also share his struggles with his own demons, including various emotional attachments to patients, his antipathy toward some, his compulsive need to save all of them, and the despair at the herculean tasks he sets himself to. He also marvels and finds comfort in the resiliency of the human spirit when even one patient finds the way to recovery. This excellent, highly topical, and well-written book is a must-have for public libraries. Kathleen Hughes Copyright © American Library Association. Features & Highlights

  • Dr. Drew Pinsky is best known as the cohost of the long-running radio advice program Loveline. But his workday is spent at a major Southern California clinic, treating the severest cases of drug dependency and psychiatric breakdown. In this riveting book, Pinsky reveals the intimate and often shocking stories of his patients as they struggle with emotional trauma, sexual abuse, and a host of chemical nemeses: alcohol, marijuana, Ecstasy, heroin, speed, cocaine, and prescription drugs. At the center of these stories is Pinsky himself, who immerses himself passionately, almost obsessively, in his work. From the sexually compulsive model to the BMW-driving soccer mom, Cracked exposes, in fast-moving, powerful vignettes, the true scope and severity of addiction, a nationwide epidemic.

Dr. Drew Pinsky is the most amazing man in the world!

I was a patient of Dr. Pinsky's back in 1999 at Las Encinas. I was an in/out patient for nine months. Never during that time did he need to pull out my chart to review my case. He has a knack of remembering each and every patient, the milligrams of meds they are on, their husbands and how many children they have. You are never hurried out of his office, if you need him he's there for you. Even if he's in another state filming a tv show he's only a phone call away. He can find out the root of your problem in about five minutes. This is the most gifted man in the world. I only wish that everybody could be his patient. Even though I wasn't an actual addict, I just needed to detox from way too much prescription medication, he always made me feel as if I belonged. He would ask me every few days if I was ok being there among heroin, crack, prescription etc. addicts and alcoholics because he didn't want me to feel "out of place". I was perfectly fine. There were musicians, doctors, actors, homeless people, college students, garbage truck drivers, homemakers, police officers, teachers, you name it sitting in the same group sessions as me. I was really no different than they were. I had a bad childhood too which is normally the beginning of the root of addiction. I have friends that I met there that will be my friends forever thanks to the program. I believe that anybody could benefit from this program even if they've never taken a drug or drink in their life. What you learn is how to cope with life. We all have our problems and I can't begin to tell you what it did for my life.
I was an executive, married with a 2 and 4 year old daughter. My doctors had me so messed up on drugs that I actually do not remember about six months of my life prior to meeting Dr. Pinsky. My marriage was falling apart, we actually split up for a while. If I would have gone another two weeks without him I would have died. Dr. Pinsky saved my life and gave me back my family. I know how dedicated he is to his patients. The heartbreak from having friends relapse is devastating. I can't imagine how it breaks his heart.
This book speaks the ultimate truth about life. Not just if your an addict but just a human being. It should be required reading for everyone, especially parents. It's all about being prepared for what your children are going to put you through as the years go by. I have a stepson who is a sex addict (pornography). It's no different than heroin or alcohol. It happens for the same reasons.
If you only read one book in your entire lifetime, please make it this one. It could save you or someone you know. I know it's not a "self-help" book but with Dr. Pinsky at the wheel it's all you'll need. He speaks from his heart and I know that for fact. As I read above about Dr. Phil who I admire and respect, he has nothing on Dr. Pinsky.
Thank you Dr. Pinsky, always, Shawne

Cracked and Loveline

I think for someone who has gone through the things Dr. Pinsky describes in Cracked, the book may be helpful. To the rest of us it is mostly boring. I was looking forward to reading it for a long time because I am a huge fan of Loveline and after listening to Dr. Drew beg people to read it, I finally did. It was mostly disappointing. After hearing one or two of the patient's stories, they all started to sound the same. Would have worked better as just a long article in a periodical. Sorry Dr Drew, I know you hate bad reviews. Also, I guess you don't actually listen to your own show, but the "Are You A Mormon" drop Anderson plays, which you always say "never fails to get a response" and "100 percent of the time people answer it," is ridiculous. About half the time the person does not respond. Also, there have been at least two instances where the person actually came out and said that they knew it was not real and did not answer. Funny when it works, but by no means works all the time and you make yourselves sound stupid when you insist it works every single time. Thanks for doing the radio show and I hope you, unlike Adam, can accept honest criticism

Interesting and Insightful

Dr. Drew has put together a great and insightful look into the [real] world of addiction. Other critics here may cite "overdone" statements of sexuality and attractiveness about female patients, but those readers miss the points of manipulation by the addicted brain. Ideas such as these are critical to truly understanding the addicted mind and how the disease warps decisions and interpersonal interaction. Other so-called experts of today, like Dr. Phil, claim you can simply decide to stop addiction; Dr. Drew shows the fallacy of this theory through personal experience and sharing in Cracked.

As for the argument of Dr. Drew being bullied by Adam on Loveline, listeners need to understand the dynamic they share. In the short time allotted to solve callers' problems, especially those involving abuse and/or addiction, monitoring interaction between the caller and a quasi-abusive authority figure (Adam) can very effectively indicate past pain. Please don't mistake this for bullying; after all, as much as we love Adam, it's really Drew's show.

cracked

Some people start reading this book thinking that it will be about addicted patients. These people will likely be disappointed. I have discovered that it is instead a book about Dr Pinsky... of how he aquired a need to save people, how he satisfies this need with his work, and how his needs may be evolving.
I would strongly reccommend this book to people who care about Dr Drew, and want to see what's going on in that head of his.

From a cop

As a police officer I deal with addicts everyday. I've arrested drunk drivers that blow up to a .44grms, and bust at least two people a month writing forged perscriptions. I always wonder, "How do these people get like this?".
Being a love line listener, I was really intersted in this book. Or at least, how does a doctor deal with the same kind of people I deal with. This book really gave me some insight. Perhaps in the future I can deal with people more like victims, instead of criminals.

Information is power

One of the best things a person can do to help a loved one inflicted with addiction is to understand the condition before they try to "help". This book provides the reader with an understanding of addiction from a doctor who has been dealing with addiction for longer than many of us have been alive (sorry Drew, lol).
Desperately trying to find a cure for a loved one with addiction without fully understanding what addiction is will only further enable the addiction, IMHO. For such people, treating their codependency will be the best maneuver in helping their loved one overcome this disease.
Ultimately, we are all responsible for putting back together our own lives, and without good people like Dr. Pinsky dedicating a part of his life to the treatment and education of Addiction, many would be unable to gain the understanding that creates the framework for putting it all back together.

Great Insight Into Addiction Treatment

First off, I have read the book many times since I bought it and have learned something new each time I have read it. Dr. Pinsky has really done well in explaining the relationships that form between doctor and patient and how important the establishment of good boundaries is to the process of addiction treatment. It is most obvious to this reader that much effort went into writing this novel and that it is truely an attempt to explain how codependancy can influence one's life.

A book that I told my friends and family about...

I listen to LOVELINE on my iPod everyday on my drive to work (90 miles one way) and had to buy Dr Drews Book. I read it on my lunch breaks and time off and found it inspiring and profound. My mother in law is a psychologist at a rehab hospital and now refers to it in her job. GREAT BOOK. Thank you Dr Drew for being in the public for kids to hear and only wish you would come back on TV. I am 38 and a father of 3 boys. Scott B

Todd Gold Lets The Good Doctor Down.

Ask any medical transcriptionist: It's unreasonable to expect any doctor, much less one who spends ten hours a week chatting with Adam Carolla, to sit down and write a proper narrative that flows correctly, reads smoothly. Doctors aren't natural-born writers. That's why we have co-authors for projects like this.
I recall a Brian Wilson autobio that Mr. Gold also co-wrote. What quietly nagged me about that book, is a major irritation here:
TODD GOLD DOES NOT KNOW (Or CARE About) THE BASIC MECHANICS OF ENGLISH.
Paragraphs stop arbitrarily, with the subject continuing unchanged in the next. Homonyms (lookalike words with different meanings) mysteriously appear, daring the reader to guess Drew's intended meaning. Misspellings, questionable use of commas, and all your other standard eighth-grade mistakes abound. I'd love to give detailed examples, but the fact is, I'm NOT struggling through this disjointed book again. Yes. It's *that* bad.
Drew Pinsky is an insightful, brilliant, and compassionate man, who has much to offer our society. I never miss "LoveLine", if I can help it. I hope he will record a reading of this book; as a monologue, it just might work.
Todd Gold, on the other hand -- how does he even GET these jobs???
