Description

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—As this Cinderella backstory unfolds, wealthy London socialite Lady Tremaine, a widow with two young daughters, is swept off her feet by Sir Richard, a dashing visitor from Many Kingdoms. However, Lady Tremaine no sooner sets foot in Sir Richard's home when her story begins to sour. It is obvious Sir Richard married her for her money and expects her to provide childcare, keep house, and cook. Eventually, after years of a bitter existence, the gentle woman devolves into the legendary wicked stepmother. This latest in Disney's YA "Villains" series explores how Cinderella's stepmother was forced by fairy fate into the stereotyped role. After the lengthy backstory concludes, the tale, which reads more like middle grade than YA, quickly wraps up and the potentially intriguing plot is abandoned in a rush to the apparently happy ending. The fairies, who deliberately force Lady Tremaine to become a wicked stepmother, exhibit no remorse or sympathy for the woman, and the stepsisters' years of abuse and neglect are smoothed away with a closet full of new dresses. VERDICT A unique premise fails to live up to its potential. Purchase if you have dedicated Disney princess fans; otherwise look for better fairy tale rewrites by Robin McKinley, Gail Carson Levine, and others.—Nancy Nadig, Penn Manor Sch. • her
  • happily ever after...
  • It’s a familiar tale: A kind and beautiful young girl, reeling from loss. A doting father, frantic to bring a mother’s love back into his daughter’s life. How did she become so closed off that, in the face of a child’s grief, she thought only to seek wealth and power for herself and her abhorrent daughters? Before that fateful ball, before the glass slipper and the prince, there was another story―a story of love and grief, of hope and of dreams dashed. It is the story of Lady Tremaine.Even the coldest of villains are sometimes wives and mothers, women who loved and lost and hoped forsomething grander for their lives . . . once upon a dream.
  • The latest novel in Serena Valentino’s deliciously devious Villains series introduces the most famed and hated wicked stepmother of them all―but turns everything you know about her on its head.

A Fairy Tales' Victim.

Lady Tremaine was Cinderella's cruel villain who in my past point of view was a simple antagonistic character; it was clear that she had potential for a great backstory or at least a good, and fairly tale like motive for that hatred inside of her for Cinderella. Instead we got a character for with no motivein the whole movie. She could've just be kind with Cinderella she would've gotten what she wanted, wealth, social status and maybe some husbands for her daughters. So why did she do all she did?. Well this book explains perfectly her character ,desires and feelings. The reason of that hateful sight that she had whenever she looked to Cinderella and of course answers one of the most important questions in a villains tale; Was she always so cold hearted? This book was once again a marvelous addition to the villain series. Congratulations Valentino you did it again.

Now to the whole book review; as always I'll try to be as briefly as possible, and bring to the little those interested little details at the same time.

Spoliers:

The odd sisters and circe meddling in lady Tremaine story was something, that I was sorta expecting since we've got it in all the other books (except cruella's kinda....) , but I dont know Circe's actions were kinda of her character. First she would have never even waited to see lady Tremaine and her daughters to get to the many kingdoms. She was kinda off for me; I believe its one of the few dislikes that I have for this book. For the odd sisters were as mad and odd as always.

Cinderella's father surprised me more than I expected. I thought the author was going to go for the same route that most people take when they talk about the parents of most princess sweet , kinda, and benevolent, but she didn't; instead we got something better; The best villain's villain. Cinderella's father was a man with no love for anyone else except for her daughter and her dead wife. He fell into madness and his heart became cruel. I did not like his actions but I like to belive that he doesn't just represents a man that take advantage of a patriarchal society but also of a "good" person falling into their darkest feelings. I dont belive he was himself but a person blinded by their grief, andd through time he couldn't come back from those dark thoughts .

Lady Tremaine surprisingly took my heart and stoked from my chest. I dont how you did it serena , but you did you turned a character that i had no connection with and turned it into one of my favorites. Her character development felt so real and the way the author described her suffering and desperation; I could feel her frustration when she saw that her fate was holding her back from her happily ever after. That she was the villain of the story without even doing anything. I felt so sorry for her that my stomach was having a horrible feeling as I read her prays to the fairy godmother to listen to her distress call. But they didn't help her. She had no choice but to try to do everything for her own. She only tried to give her daughters and herself the live they deserved. She had to lose all her weaknesses, all her emotions, she had to become cold hearted.

Her brooch was something that I wasn't expecting in the story. But I loved the idea that she tried to find control in the last gift of the man who truly loved her. I have my theory of the brooch; I belive it gives the user the ability to loss all her emotions that can make her lose her will. Meaning that anger ,envy greed , all of the emotions that can help her to keep her fiery hate against Cinderella and will to either get out of the many kingdoms or find husbands for her daughters.

The ending was actually sooo unexpected for me , and I kinda struggle with it. I dont know if I agree with the authors point of view. I belive she thinks petrification was the best for lady Tremaine that she had no way of redemption, and that the fairy godmother and nanny did the right thing. I didn't like how they made it seem like she was a all evil being and that there was no love left in her.

I wanted to see her cold hearted being warmed up with the love she deserved.

Delighted but a little disappointed

I love this series. Serena Valentino has such an incredible imagination. The way she can bring these fairy tale villains to life is pure magic. The reason this review got four stars is because I preordered this book on June 1 with the promise it would be delivered on the release date, which was July 6. I was informed on the release date I was not to receive my order until the following day. I was not informed before the due date that it was not going to be late. Nor was I given any information as to where my order was until the day of delivery.

great book!

This was a pretty good addition to the Disney villain series. I loved lady Tremaine’s backstory and I love the twist of who is the actual villain. I wish we would’ve seen more of a lady Tremaine’s downfall. I feel like most of the book was her backstory and what happened to her but it doesn’t really show the moment that she switched and turned into the villain. I was just expecting her to be the worst villain of all the way that they had talked in the previous books and I feel like hers was one of the ones that was the biggest injustice done to her. I did however love the redemption for the stepsisters and I really love the change of heart from the fairy godmother because she was really bothering me in all the previous books. I am super super super excited for the next book though and super hopeful because Captain Hook is my favorite villain and I cannot wait to see what plays and his story and how all these jade pieces of jewelry intertwine.

A good read for sure!

I have read all the others and just like those I loved this one. I have never been a big fan of Cinderella so I didn't really care for the villian either. This book has changed my mind. Its a good read for sure and make you understand that nasty stepmom

The author is the cold hearted one

This is the only book out of the series that left me with a really bad taste and feeling ver very very sorry for lady Tremaine. She was actually the victim all along. What Cinderella's father did to her and her daughters was abuse and it was horrible. I really wanted a win for Lady tremaine. The ending was sad because she didn't deserve what tney did to her and then she was laughed at by the fairies after they admitted it was all their fault. Thank you for giving the step sisters that ending. I was happy for them but felt sorry for Lady Tremaine. She was trapped and her behavior was reasonable although how she treated her daughters in the end was upsetting as well but this women went mad and I don't understand why she couldn't have a better ending.

A prequel back story for Lady Tremaine

I really don't know how I feel about this book. I understood when starting it that it was a sort of prequel back story to how Lady Tremaine came to be the villain in the classic Cinderella story. I just don't think I actually liked the story. It went back to the age old mean controlling husband and the wife, who came into the marriage with much more, being lorded over. I guess I would have liked to see more of a win for the Lady. Some of the points about the girls interactions put the Stepsisters in to a better light but this one wasn't a win for me. They did reference things from the previous books that I guess I would have understood better if I had read these in order.
