Description

Shawn Kobb is an American author living in Vienna, Austria. In addition to writing mysteries and thrillers, he moonlights as a diplomat and has lived and worked in Ukraine, The Bahamas, Afghanistan, and Washington, DC. If he told you any more than that, he'd have to kill you. Before joining the U.S. Foreign Service, he worked as a 911 dispatcher for a large city in the Pacific Northwest well-known for its rain. Not Seattle, the other one. While working as a dispatcher, he had ample opportunity to develop plot ideas while speaking on the phone with crime victims, murderers, naughty children, and schizophrenics. He lives in Vienna with his wife, a dog, and a cat.

Features & Highlights

  • VIENNA. A city of history and culture, where Mozart, Freud, and Beethoven once walked the streets. A little good-a little bad

I liked some things about this novel and I disliked other things I won a copy of this book from Goodreads. The plot was very good,as was the history and descriptions of Vienna ,Austria. Almost makes a person book a tour to that country. What I did not like were the characters. They seemed unrealistic in their behavior and the choices they made.Mr. Kobb is a good writer and should continue his craft, but try to make the characters choices a little more logical .

A great read that I didn't want to put down!

What a great read! This book was right up my alley. I loved the action and mystery all while delving into some great character backgrounds. The humor was right on point and I felt as though I was actually in Vienna with the vivid descriptions of the beautiful city. Great job and I can't wait for the second book to come out!

Poor development

I am so disappointed. This book had so much promise. Great premise, characters that could have really been interesting but were too stupid to live. I made myself go on and finish the book but the protagonist started off making the worst decision he could and for spurious, unjustified reasons. He apparently thought he was Tom Cruise or Bourne or something but without the background. He should have been killed so many times it was amazing. Fact is, I wanted to kill him myself just to get it over.

Mystery in Modern Vienna - I recommend

Good read. I enjoyed reading City of Ghosts, the mystery held my interest to the very end!y I never knew what was going to be around the corner. Very nice descriptions of Vienna. I wanted to go back immediately and get a Grosser Brauner at the first Kaffee Haus I come to.

To get into the mood take a look at the book Kaffeehaus: Exquisite Desserts from the Classic Cafés of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague by Rodgers, Rick. If you wish to read more mysteries that take place in Vienna but these take place at the turn of the Century try J. Sydney Jones - Viennese Mysteries and TR Tallis - Lieberman Pappers Series.

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book. I was able to relate to the characters and I was happy to vicariously revisit many of the places I have visited before in Vienna. I remember walking through Freud Park and seeing the Votive Church nearby in twilight and how it was so lit up that it seemed to float above the ground like something enchanted. I really felt like I walked along the park and streets there with Jake and Anna. I have started the next book, Tower of Fools, and was happy to be reacquainted with Jake and Tess. All I can further say is that I hope the author works quickly on volume 3.
