Description

“William Martin's books are an addiction. A fine mix of historical fiction and modern quest novel, with plenty of action and bad guys, they are pure fun, story-telling at its finest.” ― Stephen Coonts, New York Times bestselling author of The Assasin “A fast-moving political thriller...” ― The Boston Globe on The Lost Constitution “A master storyteller.” ― Seattle Post-Intelligencer “A rip-roaring page-turner. A perfect read.” ― The Boston Globe on Back Bay New York Times bestselling author WILLIAM MARTIN is best known for his historical fiction, which chronicles the lives of the great and the anonymous in American history while bringing to life legendary American locations, from Cape Cod to Annapolis to The City of Dreams . His first novel, Back Bay , introduced Boston treasure hunter Peter Fallon, who is still tracking artifacts across the landscape of our national imagination. Martin received a New England Book Award, given to "an author whose body of work stands as a significant contribution to the culture of the region."

Features & Highlights

  • "Can I interest you in saving America?"
  • That's the text message Peter Fallon receives from a Wall Street bigwig. It's not a challenge he can turn down, especially since the country is in the midst of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
  • Hidden somewhere in New York City is a box of 1780 bonds with a face value of ten thousand dollars. The Supreme Court is about to decide if these bonds still have value. If the decision is yes, those ten thousand dollars, at five percent interest, will be worth a very pretty penny...
  • Peter Fallon and his girlfriend, Evangeline Carrington, must find the box―and fast. Suddenly, their race against time becomes a race through time as Peter and Evangeline track the stories of New Yorkers whose lives have been changed by the bonds… and all the while they'll unravel the thrilling and inspiring origins of the City of Dreams.

City of Dreams

This historical novel kept me on the edge of my chair! The plot twists were complex;however, they were plausible. The author created characters that I for whom I cared! Anyone that has visited lower Manhattan would enjoy the setting and see how it has evolved over the centuries.

A Mystery of Compound Interest

This was my first William Martin adventure with the characters Peter Fallon and Evangeline Carrington. It is a fun romp involving a two century old financial mystery. Starting with the Revolutionary War through to current economic woes, Martin has us following the trail of New Emission Money or early bonds. Underlying the well-paced plot are lessons on credit, debt, "me-first consumption and profligate spending", and the water tanks that sit atop New York City buildings. Personally, I love New York City history so I very much enjoyed going back in time with City of Dreams reminding me a bit of Pete Hamill's Forever. I intend on checking out the earlier books in the series.

Great NYC-based historical fiction

Great read! William Martin takes us through the history of Manhattan from the American Revolution to the present as we follow the trail of war bonds that were issued to fund the war but never redeemed. The story is woven around well-researched historical facts. It's plausible and disbelief is so well suspended that one could easily think fiction is fact.

Very good historical fiction, going back to US Revolutionary War

I enjoyed reading this book and give it 4 out of 5 stars. It is part history, going back to 1776 and the Revolutionary War, part historical fiction, and part modern day thriller. The book opens with people trying to find twenty thousand dollars worth of US Revolutionary war New Emission bonds. These bonds could be worth over a billion dollars with compound interest.

One thread follows the persons who have possession of the bonds going back to 1780 up the present time. The second thread takes place in the present day, with a variety of people trying to find the bonds, some of whom are willing to kill to get these bonds.

This book is #4 in the Peter Fallon series, but it read ok as a stand alone. Peter Fallon is a rare book expert and at the center of the present day thread.

William Martin is a true american storyteller. From "Cape Cod" to "Back Bay" to "Harvard Yard" to the "City of Dreams", Martin weaves history and mystery with modern day treasure hunting.
I am captivated by his writing style and his down to earth characters.
Not only do I love the stories but being from Boston, Massachusetts I also receive a history lesson reading alot of his books.
