Christmas at Winter Hill

“Christmas in Winter Hill” by Melody Carlson, book review

Krista is moving to Washington to start a new life with her young daughter. She keeps telling herself that this is an adventure and it will all work out! She has experience in running a large city, and will take those skills to revamp Winter Hill. But soon after she arrives, she really doubts Winter Hill is ready to be revamped.

Emily, Krista’s daughter, is excited about the move and just keeps asking, “When will it snow?” After living in Arizona she views Washington as the place where she can finally have a white Christmas. But Krista is not a fan of Christmas, as it was always a disappointing time of year for her. Will Winter Hill change her view? Especially when she learns that the town’s biggest event is centered around Christmas and all its festivities.

This is a wonderful story about Christmas, God’s love and redemption through forgiveness. Emily shows Krista, through her child faith that God cares and brings hope to their lives. Enjoy this book as you enter the Christmas season.

Hallmark worthy Christmas movie!

Krista Gallaway is NOT a fan of Christmas. So why is she crazy enough to move from Phoenix, Arizona to Winter Hill, Washington accepting the job of City Manager? Especially when she finds out Chirstmasville is their biggest event of the year! And, to top that off, she’s expected to get behind the celebration 100%.

This was definitely a cutesy, Christmasy, warm-hearted story that will have you rooting for the magic of holiday miracles and the power of love. Krista and her daughter Emily are a delightful duo that dug into my heart as characters to come to care deeply about. Emily—with her little girl charm & enthusiasm for all things Christmas—has big dreams for her mom and starting over in a town that promises her first snowfall! She’s every mom’s dream for a perfect little girl. Though Krista is dead-set against Christmas due to her rough childhood, she at least tries to get into the spirit for the sake of the town. I think perhaps a certain young man named Connor softens her heart with his natural charm and the friendship of his daughter Anna. Watching the foursome become friends (perhaps more?) & the conspiring of two young girls was fun, while watching the town grow on Krista was my grown-up version of a Hallmark worthy Christmas story! I’d love to see this played out on TV; it would be one I’d watch every year. Last but not least, the spiritual theme was uplifting with reminders of the power of God’s love and care for each one of us.

If you’re looking for a inspiring Christmas-themed story full of charming characters and the promise of good things to come, look no farther than Christmas in Winter Hill!

Lovely Christmas Story

One of my favorite parts of Christmas is reading a new Christmas book by Melody Carlson. Carlson creates a holiday atmosphere in which the reader is fully immersed in the town's Christmas celebration. More than that, the characters are people that the reader could expect to meet in any day's comings and goings. Krista, the main character, has to be tough, both professionally and as a single mother, but she also knows the value of integrity, truthfulness, and compassion. This was a short book, but one in which the reader can join the town of Winter Hill in their Christmasville celebration.

I received a copy of this book from the author for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

MS. CARLSON DOES IT AGAIN!

Slow my beating heart! Another Melody Carlson Christmas book! I cannot even express how I look forward to each one of Ms. Carlson’s new holiday books! It amazes me how she captures the spirit of the season and all character’s individual perceptions.
Winter Hill looks like a fresh new start her life and her career to recently divorced Krista. Her job as a small town city manager turns out to be much more complex than she anticipated. A difficult childhood in foster care has turned Krista into a non-Christmas person. Even with her little daughter Emily she doesn’t celebrate the holiday. Wouldn’t you know it! Winter Hill is Christmas celebration crazy! As new city manager she is thrown directly into the hubbub of planning the big event. More serious problems are at hand as Krista finds some concerning evidence in the inner workings of the city finances.
There were so many emotions Ms. Carlson captured in her characters. For one, the excitement of town’s people preparing for their giant annual celebration. It was contagious just reading it! I could picture all the food, game booths and families spending quality time together.
Not everyone has Currier and Ives Christmas memories. Pain and disappointment can sometimes run deep, like Krista’s from her childhood in foster care. I felt her struggle in trying to hide her attitude from her new associates and her sweet little daughter. I experienced her anxiety of doing the right thing even though it was unpopular as a new person in town. The author’s talented writing also enabled me to picture each person, the decorations, and all the details surrounding the story. It was almost like watching a Christmas movie! Not only will this book put you in the Christmas spirit but will delight you with many surprises along the way. Another incredible Christmas book by the author! I can’t wait for the next one!

Christmasville

This book isn’t too bad. I’m not all the way through but what I’ve read so far is OK. In this book, Krista moves to small town Winter Hill, which is big on the Christmasville celebration. The book is slowly revealing why she doesn’t like Christmas, being as open to her daughter as she possibly can. This is a pretty easy and straightword read, not overly wordy. The plot is moving at a good pace without a lot of redundant details. I’m looking forward to reading more about Krista and her daughter as they get acquainted with the citizens of Winter Hill. What I've read so far is enough to keep me reading.

Heart-warming Christmas Story

When Krista agrees to move to a town that has the name Christmasville, she has no idea of what she has gotten herself into. Christmas is not her favorite holiday, but she can just get through this once a year celebration, right?
Krista is a single mom looking for a city that will be good for her and her daughter, Emily, to finally call home. But when trouble arises, it looks like Krista and Emily will be back on the road again with no where to go.

Melody Carlson has a written a another heart-warming Christmas story just in time for the upcoming Christmas season. Christmas is such a fun setting for a romance novel, and there is just something about watching a good hallmark movie during this season that people look forward to every year. This story definitely reminded me of a hallmark movie. The characters are down-to-earth people that the reader can relate to. I think it is comical that the main character who hates Christmas moves to a town called Christmasville and hopes that she doesn't have to do too much with the town's celebrations. Overall, it's a sweet story, maybe a little predictable, but that is what you expect from a hallmark movie. So, if you love cuddling under a warm blanket and watching all the Christmas shows during the holiday season, make sure to pick up Melody Carlson's newest book Christmas in Winter Hill.

A good Christmas tale, but I wanted a little more

This not the first Melody Carlson book I’ve read. I read Courting Mister Emerson a while back and it was good. Carlson’s writing style is different and doesn’t press too much on Christianity, but it does have tidbits of faith entertwined, which makes it a clean novel.

We meet Krista Galloway and her daughter, Emily, moving in to a little town called Winter Hill. Emily instantly realizes everything is related to Christmas in the town, and becomes excited. However, Krista cannot stand the thought of Christmas. The circumstances of her past experiences and having a birthday on Christmas Eve does not help the situation, but she does her best for her daughter to enjoy the holiday.

When Krista arrives in Winter Hill, she soon discovers not everyone is happy with her new presence, especially the financial person. Because of the timing Krista, also , becomes involved the Christmasville Festival, which doesn’t help the situation. Will Krista become the Grinch that Stole Christmas or will she open her eyes to see the joy the season brings? Will the Festival be cancelled or will it go on? You will just have to find out for yourself.
I want to mention that this book is a good short read. It only has 15 chapters and you can easily read two in a sitting. It is well written and the story is realistic. I wished for a little more structure and of a better ending, but it was good.

I want to thank the publisher, Revell, and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this great book. I loved the Christmas tale of finding peace.
